The Capture

Bhavani of Tuljapur starts the legend as a blood-goddess — buffalo sacrifice, the "goat with thirty-two teeth," a sword she possesses, a deity who takes over Shivaji's body and forbids his renunciation because she still needs his hands for killing. A century later Mahipati can't have a vegetarian-saint's king worshipping a goddess who eats buffalo, so he doesn't delete her — he ranks her down and dissolves her into "Adi Maya," the abstract Vedantic Mother-Illusion. The goddess who demanded Afzal Khan's severed head becomes a philosophical principle of feminine creative power. Same name. Completely defanged.

The Live Wire

• First wire (obvious): Sanskritization — a folk deity getting absorbed into a "higher" Brahmanical/Vedantic frame.
• Second wire (deeper): The most effective way to neutralize a dangerous figure is not to erase her but to promote her into abstraction. Deletion leaves a hole people notice; elevation-into-philosophy leaves a respectable nothing. The blood goes; the name and the reverence stay; the teeth are gone. Absorption is more total than erasure.
