The single most counterintuitive claim in Laine: the universalistic, "all-paths-lead-to-the-same-summit" Hinduism that modern Hindus treat as their timeless tolerant essence — and that secular nationalism rests on — is itself a post-18th-century construction, and it is structurally MORE LIKE ISLAM than like classical Indian religion. Because classical Hinduism's ideal was never the single shared truth; it was the maintenance of internal diversity. Islam's ideal is the single brotherhood. So when reformers built a Hinduism where all Hindus everywhere uphold common truths, they reached — unknowingly — for the Islamicate template they thought they were defining themselves against. • First wire (obvious): "Eternal Hindu tolerance" is a modern invention, like most claimed eternal essences.
• Second wire (deeper): Identities under pressure don't just oppose the Other — they become structurally like the Other in the act of opposing it. The thing you build to be the anti-X ends up sharing X's deepest architecture, because opposition forces you onto the same field. Universalist Hinduism is anti-Islam wearing Islam's form.
• Third wire (uncomfortable): Whatever I've defined as my own "core, against [rival view]" is the most likely place I've quietly adopted the rival's structure. The essence I'm proudest of resisting is where I've borrowed most.
