There is one continuum running from the stage hypnotist's planted shill, through the alleged programmable assassin (Hardrupp's 1951 conviction, the Candy Jones courier, the whole MKULTRA-era folklore), to the documented cult conversion sequence — and it is the same mechanism at rising stakes. Each step depends on the same move: get the subject to perform an act while believing the impulse is their own, by lowering the point of suggestion beneath the layer where they audit their own reasons. The shill claps because the room expects it; the convert gives away the inheritance because the family asked; the alleged assassin acts because the deed was reframed as serving a worthy purpose. The essay would argue that the lurid version (mind-controlled killers) and the mundane version (a friend who can't say no to the group) are not different in kind — they differ only in how deep the suggestion was planted and how high the cost the subject was carried to. The horror of the assassin story is borrowed entirely from the banality of the shill.
