To get a grip is to be able to move it, predict it, use it, control it. A name is a handle. And Śiva, in Selvalingam's telling, is the god who refuses every handle — wears the cremation ash, keeps the snakes, marries and abandons the householder script, is the great yogi and the great lover, the destroyer and the most gracious — so that the moment you reach for the handle that says "he is X," he's already not-X. He is, precisely, the uncontrollable. And then the screw turns: this is why he's hard to worship. You can't pin him for the duration of a ritual; the Vijñāna Bhairava half-admits the worshipper is always one step behind a god who won't hold still.
