It suggests the self is, in a precise sense, un-hackable by force: the only door to conversion is the one the person opens themselves.
The border between behavior and belief is the one thing a century of escalating coercion technology never crossed — which may mean it's a genuine structural feature of minds, not a frontier awaiting better tools.
