Who cares if your gong-fu is the best in the world? Do you think that's what it's all about? If it's the best in the world, so what? After you die, it's gone!
[RESONANCE] A cultivation manual putting world-class attainment on the same destroyed list as money and fame is already unusual. What made it stick is what happens when you ask why it is on that list and dispositions are not.
The answer is about storage. A state is stored in conditions; a disposition is a groove cut into the material. The reset destroys conditions and preserves shapes.
And then the second thing, which is the actual spark: run the same audit on ordinary assets and the ranking is unchanged. Capital, credentials, reputation, specialised skill — all cross badly or partially. How you respond to being wrong crosses completely.
Line up the properties of the durable asset and the neglect explains itself:

Effort flows to the assets with display surfaces. Not through vanity — through every feedback mechanism available pointing that way.
Which explains something otherwise puzzling: character is what matters is not a difficult insight, and yet it has to be re-taught in every tradition and every generation. It is a structurally disadvantaged claim. It loses to every measurable competitor at every decision point, so it cannot be learned once; it has to be reasserted continuously.
Same shape, different context. The Four-Minute Fix That Wasted Twenty-Five has a rail company funding 4.7 minutes because journey time is fundable and whether the 35 minutes felt productive is not. Same mechanism, no cosmology required: the legible term absorbs the investment, and nobody in the room preferred the proxy.
And it reframes what wisdom traditions are for. Not the transmission of a hard insight. The maintenance of an easy insight against a permanent structural headwind.
Against Only Cultivation Changes Personality: the sole asset that survives every reset is also the one least responsive to deliberate effort. If dispositions are both the only durable thing and the hardest thing to change, then either the returns to character work are enormous or the whole recommendation is unactionable, and nothing in the corpus tells you which.
Promotion criterion: find a case — clinical, biographical, or organisational — where a disposition demonstrably changed on a timescale a person could observe, and identify what did it. If every documented case runs through environment change rather than resolve, that settles the actionability question in a way neither the tradition nor the business literature currently states.
