The Format Ranks What the Author Did Not

The Observation

One author, one corpus, two neighbouring documents, two opposite structures — and the structures track the document type rather than the content.

In the bhakti document he takes three positions the source verse holds simultaneously — servant, portion, identical — and arranges them as Stage One, Stage Two, Stage Three, with the third as "your ultimate destination."

In the rasa document he takes multiple emotional registers and, at month eleven, has the practitioner hold them at once, calling them "archetypal chords."

Same author. Same months. He has the chord. He applies it to feeling and not to devotion.

The Compressed Form

A curriculum cannot easily say and. Its grammar is then: months one to eight, then nine to twenty. Give simultaneous material to a format built on sequence and the format will rank it, without anyone deciding to.

Nobody chose to demote the servant-stance. The syllabus demoted it, because a syllabus has to put something first and putting something first means something else comes after.

Where It Might Go

The interesting question is which other simultaneities have been silently sequenced by the format that carried them. Candidates worth checking: developmental-stage psychology applied to material its own sources presented as concurrent capacities; "levels of listening" and similar training ladders; maturity models generally, which take a set of practices and impose an order that the practices themselves do not require.

The diagnostic: go back to the source the ladder was built from and count its conjunctions. If the source says and where the model says then, the arrow was added in transit — and the thing most likely to be lost is whatever the source listed first, because a ladder's bottom rung is the one you are supposed to leave.
