Rao vs Rath — Savana-vs-Solar Year for Vimsottari (Father-vs-Guru Methodology)

- Rao (Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach, 2000/2010): uses savana-year (365.25 civil days) for Vimsottari dasha computation - Sanjay Rath (Rao's guru): teaches solar-year (~365.24 days, the actual astronomical solar year) for Vimsottari computation

The two units produce subtly different dasha-transition timings. Per-year the difference is small (about 0.01 day); over a 120-year Vimsottari cycle, the cumulative drift produces multi-day shifts in dasha-transition predictions.

The collision

Rao publishes the divergence without making it a controversy. He uses savana-year as his computational standard; his guru teaches solar-year. The within-lineage disagreement is preserved silently — neither aggressively defended nor rejected. The student deviates on a foundational computational rule of the most-used dasha system in jyotish, and the lineage continues without rupture.

This is structurally striking because foundational-rule disagreements usually rupture transmission. In many traditional-knowledge lineages (certain Tibetan-tantric, monastic-Catholic, Hindu-sampradayic), foundational-rule deviation between disciple and guru produces lineage-breakage. The Sanjay-Rath-direct lineage apparently does not work this way. Why?

Candidate idea

The transmission's deepest content is at a different level than the surface computational rules. What the Konark-tāmra-poti transmission contains is methodology-of-integration (how to weave Parashari + Jaimini + Tajaka together; how to use multiple dashas as epistemic vantages), not specific computational unit-choices. Disciples can deviate on the surface rules because the surface rules are not the transmission.

This generalizes: in any generative-lineage, the transmission's deepest content operates at a different layer than surface-application rules. Disciple-deviation at the surface signals robust-transmission-at-the-depth. Disciple-uniformity at the surface signals mimicry, not transmission.

What would need to be true
  • For this collision to be a stable claim:
  • 1. The Rao-Rath divergence is documented (Rao's text explicitly states savana-year usage; Sanjay Rath's published teachings explicitly state solar-year usage). This is checkable in their respective corpora.
  • 2. The divergence has empirical-consequence — different dasha-transition predictions for the same charts. This is structurally true given the unit-difference.
  • 3. The divergence has not ruptured the lineage — Rao and Rath remain in lineage-contact and Rath continues to authorize Rao as a Sanjay-Rath-direct disciple. This is checkable through Rao's own statements and through Sanjay Rath's writings about his disciples.
  • 4. The pattern generalizes — other generative-lineages show similar disciple-vs-guru methodology-divergence without rupture (Krishnamacharya-Iyengar-vs-Ashtanga; Jung-Hillman-vs-von-Franz). This is checkable through cross-lineage comparison.
