EDT presents shadow integration as a stage-specific achievement — you reach Strategist consciousness and then become capable of shadow work. Before that stage, the repressed material cannot be safely integrated because the ego structure isn't developed enough to hold it.
Edinger presents shadow integration as the mechanism driving the entire alchemical sequence from beginning to end. You don't integrate shadow once you reach a certain stage; the integration of shadow IS the work at every stage. Calcinatio begins burning away the defenses that contain shadow. Mortificatio includes the death of the identity that was built on shadow-rejection. Coniunctio is the final marriage of the integrated shadow with consciousness.
