Twenty-three, and Henry Ford sees his first gas-powered engine. Instant love — not for the object, but for the idea inside it: an engine that generates its own power. He'd already apprenticed as a machinist and worked on every device he could get his hands on, but nothing compared. He decided, on the spot, that pioneering a horseless carriage would be his Life's Task.1

Night shift as an engineer at the Edison Illuminating Company; days spent building an internal-combustion engine in a shed behind his house, from scavenged scrap metal. By 1896 he had a prototype — the Quadricycle — running on the streets of Detroit.2

The field was ruthless. New automobile companies were dying constantly. The Quadricycle ran well but was too small and unfinished for real production, so he built a second car, this time designing with manufacturing in mind. A year later it was done: simple, compact, easy to drive and maintain. All he needed was capital.3

Failure One

William H. Murphy, a prominent Detroit businessman, backed him. The Detroit Automobile Company formed with high hopes.

The prototype needed reworking almost immediately — parts sourced from different suppliers, some deficient, too heavy for Ford's standards. He kept refining, chasing his own ideal, and it took too long. Murphy and the stockholders got restless. A year and a half in, the board dissolved the company. They'd lost faith in him.4
