And yet something in you just went looking for one — your own moment, whatever it was, surfaced without being asked to. Chase Hughes calls this borrowed emotion: the operator never needs to know which specific experience a listener has been through to trigger the feelings attached to it. Vague enough language pointed at a near-universal category of experience does the retrieval automatically, and the listener supplies the specific memory — and its emotional charge — for free.1

The Mechanism: Vague Category, Specific Memory

Hughes's worked phrases share a structure: gesture at a broad category of emotionally loaded experience ("those moments," "one of those times," "all of those times that you cried") without naming a specific event, then let the listener's own memory fill the gap. "One of those times where no matter how much you hold back, everything comes out. You just feel the years of emotion coming out and there's nothing you can do to stop it." The second version, Hughes argues, "hits harder" — because the earlier lines function as setup that primes the listener before the emotional weight lands, rather than announcing the weight first and asking the listener to sit with it for the rest of the passage. He names this explicitly a right-branching sentence: the impact is structurally placed at the end, where it closes the thought rather than opening it, and where the preceding clauses have already built the context that makes the final clause land as a payoff rather than a flat statement.2

The Combined Technique in Motion

Hughes layers the two devices together in a single passage built entirely from vague, universalizing "borrowed emotion" phrases, deliberately right-branched so the emotional payload sits at the end: "It was really one of those moments that matters in your life. Once you've drafted the passage, check its structure: is the emotional weight sitting in the first clause or the last? If it's in the first clause, rewrite the sentence so the setup comes first and the payoff clause closes it — move the heaviest word or image to the end of the sentence, not the beginning. Deliver it at a natural pace, and don't follow it immediately with a request; let the listener's own retrieved memory do its work before you move the conversation forward.

Sharpest implication: If vague, right-branched emotional language really does outperform specific storytelling for generating feeling, then the operator's actual skill isn't storytelling at all — it's not telling a story, precisely enough that the listener has no choice but to tell one to themselves. The less content the operator supplies, the more room the listener has to supply something that fits their own life perfectly, which means the technique's power scales inversely with how much detail the operator is tempted to add.
