Picture two identical interrogations. Same suspect, same crime, same questions, word for word. The only difference: one room is kept at 68°F, the other at 48°F. In the cold room, the subject crosses his arms tighter, pulls his elbows in, hunches his shoulders — all closed-type gestures the Behavioral Table of Elements would normally score as deception signals. He hasn't lied any more than his counterpart in the warm room. He's cold. If the analyst doesn't know to discount for it, the cold room produces a "more deceptive" suspect out of thin air.
That's the problem the BTE's influencing factors chapter exists to solve. The chart's DRS arithmetic (see Behavioral Table of Elements (BTE)) treats every scored gesture as if it happened in a neutral vacuum. It doesn't. Six specific variables sit upstream of every gesture on the chart, quietly inflating or deflating the score before the analyst even picks up a pen — and Hughes' fix isn't to ignore them. It's to build them into the arithmetic as explicit modifiers.1
The trigger is any interview or interaction being scored on the BTE — which means the trigger is constant, because these six factors are present in every room, every conversation, every subject, whether the analyst notices them or not. Temperature, interviewer conduct, the subject's baseline emotional posture, physical distance, physical capacity, and who else is in the room: none of these are optional conditions that sometimes apply. They're the weather the entire interview happens inside.
The biological substrate is straightforward for some factors (a cold room genuinely produces closed-type protective posture independent of psychological state) and murkier for others (an "unresponsive" subject may be dissociating, may be innocent and bored, or may be a practiced liar who has learned that flat affect defeats behavioral readers). Hughes splits the six into two categories precisely because of this split reliability: Observation-Influencing factors can be measured and corrected for; Non-Measurable Effect factors exist but resist correction and get set aside entirely.1

The pattern across all six: none of them changes what a gesture means. They change how much the analyst should trust that the gesture is measuring what the BTE assumes it's measuring. A closed gesture in a cold room still points toward stress-related physiology — it's just that the physiology in question might be shivering, not concealment.
The BTE marks certain cells with blue lettering — behaviors that are temperature-dependent. The correction rule is numeric and specific: for every 10-degree increment below 69°F, closed-type gestures automatically lose one point on the Deception Rating Scale.1 This is the chart's only fully quantified environmental correction — a direct arithmetic discount built into the same system that produces the 11-point deception threshold. Run an interview in a 49°F room and you've got a two-point standing discount on every closed gesture before the subject has said a word.
This is the factor Hughes is most blunt about, because it's the one entirely inside the operator's control and therefore the one with no excuse. An interviewer who opens with confrontational or accusatory behavior manufactures stress in the subject that has nothing to do with guilt — and the effect doesn't reset when the interviewer calms down. Hughes' own line: even after the interviewer corrects course, "the resistance remains constant, even though stress behaviors begin to decline."1 The damage to the interview's evidentiary value is already done.
The correction rule: for every confrontational or accusatory behavior the interviewer displays, subtract 2 points from every 4.0-rated behavior observed afterward, and subtract 1 point from every 3.0/3.5-rated behavior. The chart is telling the analyst, in arithmetic: you did this, discount your own results accordingly.
Hughes catalogs four baseline emotional postures that will color everything else observed in the interview: Fear, Aggression, Defensiveness, and Unresponsiveness. Fear is flagged as the most common state in law-enforcement interviewing — present in innocent and guilty subjects alike, simply from being in the room. Aggression is treated as nearly undiagnosable in origin: "innocent people experience aggression as often as guilty ones."1 Defensiveness gets a genuine diagnostic claim — Hughes says a seasoned interrogator can feel the difference between guilty-defensive and innocent-defensive, because innocent defensiveness stays fixed on the denial itself rather than drifting into justification. Unresponsiveness is named the hardest state to defeat: a flat subject is behaviorally equivalent to a verbal "I don't remember," unfalsifiable and immune to standard technique.
None of the four states resolve to a numeric correction the way Temperature does. They're presented as interpretive context the analyst has to hold before scoring anything else.
Proxemics gets the chapter's only academic citation: Edward T. Hall's 1966 figure of 1.5 feet as the average personal-space boundary, cross-referenced against the Lewis Model of Cultural Types for how that boundary shifts across cultures.1 Hughes flags that Asian cultures run the most spatially distant, Arab and sub-Saharan African cultures the closest — meaning the same physical distance that reads as "closing off" in one cultural baseline reads as ordinary comfort in another. Cross the boundary deliberately and you'll get a reaction; the correction is knowing which reaction belongs to the invasion and which belongs to the person.
Handicap or Missing Limbs gets the chart's bluntest rule: any cell tied to a body part a subject can't move the way the table assumes should be dismissed outright, not adjusted — not scored, not annotated, simply excluded from the tally.
Presence of Others is flagged as real but largely unmeasurable — a subject interviewed alongside an abusive parent, or shown a face-up photo of an abusive partner, will produce behavior shaped by that third party's presence in ways the BTE can observe but can't cleanly separate from the subject's own state. Hughes' operational advice is blunt: separate the subject from other stimuli whenever the interview allows it, because the correction for this factor is mostly removal, not arithmetic.
You walk into the room first, before the subject does. Check the thermostat — is it above or below 69°F, and by how much? That number is now a standing discount you'll apply to every closed gesture you log for the rest of the session. You note who else is in the room and whether they can be removed. You catch yourself before you open with anything that could read as accusatory — because the first confrontational thing you say costs you two points off every 4.0 behavior for the rest of the interview, whether you walk it back or not.
The subject sits down. You clock their emotional posture in the first ninety seconds — are they defensive-and-still, or defensive-and-drifting? Still means innocent-flavored; drifting into unsolicited character defense means something else. You note their proxemic reaction as you sit — did they lean back when you sat 1.5 feet away, or did they not react at all? That tells you whether their cultural baseline runs closer or farther than Hall's average, which recalibrates every subsequent invasion-of-space reading for the rest of the session.
Only after all of that do you start actually tallying gestures on the DRS scale.
Evidence: The six factors are presented as Hughes' operational corrections layered directly onto the DRS scoring system, with Temperature carrying the only fully quantified numeric rule (1 point per 10°F below 69) and Interviewer Behavior carrying the second most explicit rule (2/1-point deductions per confrontational act). Proxemics is the only factor citing outside academic work — Hall (1966) and the Lewis Model.1
Tensions: Four of the six factors (Emotional State, Handicap, Presence of Others, and much of Interviewer Behavior beyond the numeric rule) resist the same numeric precision Temperature gets. The chapter presents all six factors with equal structural weight — a numbered list of six — while only genuinely quantifying two of them. An analyst following the chapter literally would apply confident arithmetic to Temperature and Interviewer Behavior while applying vague "use judgment" guidance to the other four, producing a false impression of uniform rigor across the whole system.
Open Questions: Does the 1-point-per-10°F Temperature rule hold at the extremes (a genuinely freezing room, a genuinely sweltering one), or was it calibrated only for the moderate range most interview rooms actually sit in? Is there a version of the Interviewer Behavior penalty that applies cumulatively — does a second confrontational act stack another 2-point deduction, or does the discount cap after the first one?
Hughes' six-factor correction system sits closest, inside this vault, to the baselining discipline documented in Baselining and Behavior Analysis — both are about refusing to trust a raw behavioral reading until the reading has been calibrated against something. Baselining calibrates against the individual subject's resting state. The influencing-factors chapter calibrates against the room — temperature, interviewer conduct, cultural distance norms. They're doing the same job at two different altitudes: one corrects for who this specific person is, the other corrects for what environment they're sitting in. A fully rigorous BTE reading needs both corrections running simultaneously, and Hughes never quite says that out loud — the two chapters sit near each other in the book but aren't explicitly cross-referenced.
The Temperature correction rule is a field-practitioner's blunt version of a much older psychological finding: the Schachter-Singer two-factor theory of emotion, which showed that people routinely misattribute generic physiological arousal (a racing heart, a defensive posture) to whatever emotionally salient explanation is nearest at hand — in a cold room, "shivering-driven closed posture" gets misread by an untrained observer as "guilt-driven closed posture," because both produce the identical surface behavior and only one of them is actually about the subject's mental state.
The structural connection is direct: Autonomic Nervous System Regulation documents how the same ANS output (sympathetic activation, protective posture, reduced peripheral warmth) gets produced by threat, cold, hunger, and social anxiety without a reliable surface-level way to tell which cause produced it. The BTE's Temperature rule is a crude but real instance of what interoceptive-accuracy research would call source attribution correction — it doesn't ask the analyst to feel more accurately, it asks them to subtract a fixed amount before interpreting, because the underlying physiology genuinely cannot be told apart by watching alone. The insight neither field states plainly alone: a body producing a stress signature is not thereby producing a deception signature, and any system that treats surface arousal as semantically fixed (rather than causally ambiguous) is going to systematically misfire in cold rooms, hot rooms, hungry subjects, and anxious-but-innocent ones alike.
Hughes opens the BTE chapter with a striking borrowed principle: "the first principle of interrogation is the suspension of judgment," attributed to CIA and other interrogation-school training.1 Read against the influencing-factors chapter, this stops being a throwaway ethical nicety and becomes an operational necessity — an analyst who has already formed a judgment about a cold, defensive, distant subject will read every one of the six factors as confirmation rather than as noise to be subtracted. Judgment formed early forecloses the correction arithmetic before it can run.

The insight the connection produces: suspension of judgment isn't a mood or an intention — it's a skill with a measurable failure mode (premature interpretation), and the BTE's six correction factors are a working list of exactly where premature interpretation goes wrong first.
The Sharpest Implication. The chart looks like pure arithmetic — tally the gestures, sum the DRS, cross 11, call it deception. The influencing-factors chapter quietly admits this was never true. Before a single gesture gets scored, six upstream variables have already tilted the scale, and only two of them (Temperature, Interviewer Behavior) get an actual number attached to their correction. The other four are corrected by "judgment" — which is precisely the thing the whole system was built to replace. The BTE doesn't eliminate the analyst's subjective read. It relocates it one layer upstream, to a place with fewer explicit rules and more room for the analyst's own bias to operate uncorrected.

The Ellipsis Manual — the chapter's actual origin, predating the BOM by six years — prints the symbol-lists directly, and they're worth adding because they turn "proxemics affects the reading" from a general principle into a checkable list.2

Where the existing page's Presence of Others paragraph describes the factor as "real but largely unmeasurable," the source's own printed list contradicts that a little — Hughes clearly believed the effect was trackable enough to name nine specific cells for it, even while telling the reader in the surrounding prose that a third party's influence "we cannot measure." That's the same pattern this page's Tensions section already flags for Temperature and Interviewer Behavior versus the other four factors: a numbered list presented with uniform confidence, but the actual specificity is uneven — Proxemics and Presence of Others get named cell-lists; Emotional State, Handicap, and the qualitative half of Interviewer Behavior don't.2
