Picture someone who has done the work — the breathwork, the kundalini intensives, the years of practice — and his chakras are open. He feels energy move up the spine. He reads rooms. He gets the flash before the phone rings. The system is lit up like a switchboard, every light green. And then you spend an actual week with him, and he's the same grasping, self-impressed person he was before he started, only now he has powers to back up the ego.1 The lights are on. Nobody grew.
Popular kundalini culture sells you the opposite story. Open the chakras and you ascend. Each center unlocks a stage of awakening; clear the blocks and consciousness rises. The plumbing is the path.2 Sri Aurobindo, in the Record of Yoga, says flatly: no. Opening a chakra is a plumbing event. It is not, by itself, a spiritual one — and confusing the two is exactly how a powered-up nobody gets made.3
Here is the claim in one sentence, and it cuts against most of what gets taught: opening the chakras only opens you to the powers natural to the vital and mental consciousness in your subtle body. It does not represent a spiritual growth of consciousness by itself.4
Sraddhalu, reading Aurobindo, draws the line hard. There are two different things that the popular teaching has fused into one. One is a spiritual change of consciousness — a real shift in what you are. You can have a genuine spiritual consciousness with no chakra opening at all, and "go quite away with that."8 And you can have your chakras blown wide open, powers and all, with no spiritual consciousness whatsoever — just vital-plane capacity, a clean mimicry of siddhi with nobody home.9 They are two different things. The cultural script treats them as one event with one meter, and the meter is wrong.
Think of the subtle body as a house where the lights are already on, and the physical body as a thick curtain over every window. Day to day, you live curtained. The faculties — distance-perception, thought-reception, the energetic currents — are all running on the other side of the cloth; you just can't feel them.10 Opening a chakra pulls the curtain back a little at that window. Now light from a room that was always lit pours into your physical awareness. It feels like a gift arrived. Nothing arrived. You just stopped blocking what was already there.11
That's why the powers come "naturally" with chakra work, and it's also why they signify nothing about your growth. You haven't built a new room. You haven't changed the house. You've thinned a curtain. The same faculties show up effortlessly the moment you're out of the body in dream or trance, because there the curtain is gone entirely — which tells you these are baseline features of subtle existence, not trophies of attainment.12
Now run it the other direction, because this is where the danger lives. A real change of consciousness might pull the curtains open as a side effect — grow into the higher poise and the windows tend to clear on their own.13 But you can also yank the curtains open directly, by technique, without doing any of the growing. Kundalini methods, forced chakra-opening, the whole technical apparatus — these give you the windows-open without the change of being.14 You get the powers and you keep the unpurified, ego-dominated vehicle exactly as it was. That's not a neutral outcome. That's the precise setup the vault calls the danger triangle: a power running in a weak adhara still ruled by ego.15 Technique-driven opening doesn't risk the danger by accident. It manufactures it.

The hub argues that powers are real, natural, and worth understanding; this page draws the firewall that keeps "natural and worth understanding" from sliding into "therefore pursue them by technique." By the popular account he is "advanced," several stages up the ladder.18 Deconstruct what actually happened, layer by layer, and the advancement evaporates.
First, what changed: the curtain thinned. Faculties native to his vital and mental sheaths now register in his waking awareness. That is the entire delta. His subtle body is no more developed than it was — those faculties were always running. He simply feels them now.19
Second, what didn't change: the one feeling them. The "I" sitting at the center, filing every perception under mine and proof of my specialness, is untouched. No purification happened. The ego didn't widen into anything roomier; it just got handed instruments.20 So every power that comes through gets routed straight into self-confirmation — I had a premonition, I am gifted, I am chosen. The capability went up; the maturity stayed flat. Worse than flat: the powers now feed the ego they should have dissolved.
Third, why this reads as growth to everyone watching, including him. The powers are real and verifiable — he does know things, he does move energy. Verifiability gets mistaken for sanctification. But a true thing perceived by a small self is still a small self; accuracy of perception says nothing about width of being.21 The switchboard is fully lit and the house is the same cramped house. Opening was never growth. It was access. He bought the access and skipped the growth, and the lights make the skip invisible.
You're on the cushion. Something's been happening lately — a center feels open, perceptions arrive uninvited, maybe you caught something before it happened. The old script is already running: I'm progressing. Stop there. Don't ride the feeling up.
Set the powers down for a moment and ask the only question that discriminates: am I a different person, or just a person with more reach? Feel for the ego, not the energy. Is the grasping still there — the wanting-to-be-special, the quiet bookkeeping of your own gifts? If it is, then nothing has changed where it counts; a curtain moved, that's all.22 Notice how badly you want the opening to mean something about you. That wanting is the tell. A real change of consciousness doesn't need the powers to validate it — it would be just as content with the chakras shut, going "quite away" on consciousness alone.23 Sit in that. Let the lights be lights. Refuse to read the switchboard as a scorecard. The discipline here is subtraction: take the powers out of the equation entirely and see whether anything you'd call you actually moved.
You'll know the error by its signature. The powers become evidence — every perception cited as proof of arrival.24 The self-talk turns vertical: I've reached the heart center, I'm at the third eye now, progress narrated in chakra coordinates as if a lit center were a rung climbed.25 Specialness inflates rather than thins; the sense of mission swells.26 These are the same red flags the discernment material names for distorted power generally — amplification of ambition, desire, and self-importance — and here they have a specific cause: a faculty got switched on inside a self that never dissolved.27
The deeper failure is structural, and it's the one popular culture is built on. It runs the equation opening = ascending and so it can't even see the powered-up nobody as a problem — by its own meter he's winning. The corrective is brutal and simple: a lit chakra is a thinned curtain, and a thinned curtain is not a wider soul. When you catch yourself measuring growth in openings, you've already swapped the spiritual question for the plumbing one.28
The source is unambiguous. Aurobindo, via Sraddhalu: opening chakras "would only open you to the powers natural to the vital and mental consciousness in the subtle body… but it's not a spiritual change of consciousness which would be fundamentally different," and the two are explicitly "two different things."29

Follow Aurobindo and you'd live a strange discipline: powers arrive and you deliberately decline to be impressed, because you've split "I can perceive at a distance" cleanly from "I have become more." You'd treat an open chakra the way you'd treat good eyesight — useful, natural, spiritually inert. Growth, for you, is measured somewhere the powers can't see: in whether the ego thinned.32
Follow the popular kundalini teacher instead and the felt world is the opposite. Each opening is an event of the soul. You'd track your ascent by which centers have cleared, and the rising energy would read as the literal substance of awakening — to doubt that the opening means progress would feel like denying the obvious warmth in your own spine.33
And follow the vault's own chakra-as-stations account, and you'd live somewhere in between, treating the centers as real dimensions of awareness to be inhabited in turn — which feels devotionally rich and is exactly where Aurobindo plants his warning flag, because inhabiting a station and having unlatched its window are the two things his whole counter-position exists to pry apart.34 The three don't average out. You experience a fundamentally different thing on the cushion depending on which one you've believed.
Capability is not maturity — the powered-up undeveloped self. There's a confusion this page shares with one of psychology's oldest, and naming it together produces something neither field gets alone. In developmental terms, you can hand someone enormous capability — skill, intelligence, talent, raw cognitive horsepower — and it tells you almost nothing about their maturity: their capacity to hold that power without it being captured by ego, wound, or appetite. Skill is not wisdom; power is not development; you can be formidable and undeveloped at the same time, and the formidability actively hides the underdevelopment from everyone, including yourself. Now overlay the chakra case onto that and the structure is identical: chakra opening hands you subtle-body capability — perception, energy, reach — and the popular reading commits exactly the developmental error, treating the arrival of capability as evidence of maturity. The insight that only emerges from holding them together: capability and maturity don't just fail to correlate, they can run inversely under the wrong conditions, because new capability gives the unreformed ego sharper instruments for its own confirmation. The lit-up nobody isn't merely stuck. He's worse off than before he opened, because now his smallness is armed. What the two pages produce together is a precise diagnostic: the bypass is always a substitution of event for transformation, and the more the event is a deliverable of technique — repeatable, verifiable, switch-on-able — the more total the bypass, because the seeker now has a method for staying exactly where they are while generating endless evidence of motion. The danger isn't that chakra work does nothing. It's that it does something real, something you can manufacture at will, and that manufacturable real thing becomes the most durable hiding place from the one change that can't be manufactured. Technique gives you the state. Only the change of consciousness gives you the growth. Mistaking the first for the second isn't a beginner's error you grow out of — it's a trap that gets stronger the better your technique gets.
Sharpest implication: Every power a forced chakra-opening hands you is real, verifiable, and spiritually worthless as a measure of you — and its very realness is the most convincing argument you'll ever have for the lie that you've grown.
