Siddhis — The Map of the Powers
Every contemplative tradition that goes deep enough runs into the same strange fact: practice starts throwing off powers. Knowing a thing before it happens. Feeling what another person feels from across a room. A will that bends events. The traditions don't agree on what these are, where they come from, or whether you should touch them — but they all hit them.
This hub is the map of that territory as the vault holds it. It gathers three distinct accounts of the same eight-ish powers — Patañjali's (powers as byproducts of saṃyama), the Tantric/Bhairava reading (powers as deity-grace, and the trap of chasing them), and Sri Aurobindo's Record of Yoga account (powers as supramental, divine and top-down, of which the familiar "vital" siddhi is only the reduced mechanical version). It also holds the specific powers the vault has pages on — flight, entering another body — and the one question every account agrees on: the powers are not the goal, and reaching for them is how you lose them.
Reading routes. New to it? Start with What Siddhis Are below. Wondering whether your own practice is stirring something? Go to Unfolding & Signs of Emergence. Worried about the danger? Dangers, Misuse & Safe Use. Want the deep structure? The Knowledge / Power / Being sections walk the eight one at a time.
Provenance note. The Aurobindo material (most of this hub) comes from Sraddhalu Ranade's Evenings with Sraddhalu talks on the Record of Yoga (EWS 254–256) — practitioner-lineage transmission, all claims [PARAPHRASED]; Sraddhalu reads Aurobindo's and the Mother's own words aloud, flagged where verbatim. The Patañjali and Tantric accounts carry their own provenance on their pages.
What Siddhis Are — The Three Accounts
The frameworks themselves: what a siddhi is, why there are (roughly) eight, and the three incompatible maps of the same terrain.
- The Eight Siddhis (Ashta Siddhi) — the classical taxonomy: the literal-Puranic powers and Kali Putra's psychological reading; now also Aurobindo's structural re-architecture
- The Vibhūti Pāda — Patañjali's Book III, the most-neglected quarter, where the powers are catalogued
- Siddhis as Supramental, Not Vital — the signal: Aurobindo's inversion — siddhis are divine powers run top-down; the vital siddhi is the reduced version
- The Ashta Siddhi Architecture — 2 of knowledge + 3 of power + 3 of being = the sat→chit structure of consciousness; why exactly eight
- Siddhis as Freed Habit, Not Acquired — the laws of nature are siddhis of
sat run on autopilot; freedom bound inside habit; nothing is acquired, only freed
- Siddhi as Breaking the Boundaries of Consciousness — what a siddhi essentially is: the rupture of the sense-organ's limits of space, time, and range
- Siddhis Already Operating in Every Capable Person — every successful artist or operator runs on minimum siddhis unaware; recognition is the rare part
- Infinite, Not Divine — the Wholeness Criterion — Aurobindo says infinite, not divine: safety comes from seeing-the-whole, not from a label
- Ānanda — the Missing Fourth Power —
sat and chit powers are mapped; the ānanda register that transmutes matter in ecstasy is the scheme's lacuna
The Knowledge Siddhis — Jñāna (Vyapti & Prakāmya)
The two powers of consciousness-as-knowledge: feeling knowledge come into you, and projecting it out.
The Power Siddhis — Will (Aishwarya, Ishita, Vashita)
The three degrees of conscious will, from a mere need that ripples out to a concentrated grip that bends resistance.
The Being Siddhis — Sat (Mahima, Laghima, Anima)
The three powers that change the very substantiality of matter — greatness/weight, lightness, and atomic freeing.
Specific Powers — Flight, Body-Entering, the Energy Body
The named individual siddhis the vault already holds pages on, from the Tantric / Nāth / Siddha corpus.
Justification & the Supramental Frame
Why Aurobindo refuses to shun the powers the ascetics fled — and the Mother's discrimination between miracles that are pure and miracles that are mixed.
Dangers, Misuse & Safe Use
The trap, in every tradition's words — and the precise conditions under which a power destroys the one who wields it.
- Siddhis and the Attainment Trap — the cross-traditional warning: getting powers is not enlightenment, and displaying them destroys the practice
- The Danger Triangle — Fragmentation, Weak Adhara, Egoism — the diagnostic: partial power + weak vehicle + egoism; the small poet's vanity vs. the great poet's humility
- The Four Principles of Safe Siddhi Use — Aurobindo's rubric: nature-not-miracle / ego-dissolution / dangerous-ordeal-guard / develop-don't-pursue
- Ego-Dissolution as Consciousness-Widening, Not Moralism — ego thins by widening into vastness, not by moral scrubbing; relax/open/invite vs. asura-domination
- Credulity Justifies Skepticism — why the skeptic is right: people invent miracles, sadhakas exaggerate; the charlatan's ambiguous gesture you complete yourself
- Vital-Being-Contract Siddhis — the low road: powers rented from vital beings; the stage-magician, the possessed performer
- The Ego-Extraction Ordeal — From Possession to Gift — Sraddhalu's years-long testimony: states given and torn away until "it's hers, not mine"
- Negative Faith as Self-Limiting Identity — "I am so small" as a reverse-faith that actively blocks the power
- The Ethics of Siddhi Experimentation — the practical permission: experiment on yourself, your pets, your family; "I wish you well" is already an intervention
Unfolding & Signs of Emergence
The question most people actually arrive with: how do you know it's starting? The markers of emergence, the discipline of holding what comes, and the foundation that makes it safe.
- Dhāraṇā, Dhyāna, Samādhi = Saṃyama — Patañjali's engine: the powers as residue of deepening concentration
- Signs the Siddhis Are Unfolding — the markers: mental sensation before physical sense, consciousness widening on entering a space, detail emerging without thought, sensing a presence
- Seizing and Holding — the Integration Discipline — receive → seize fully → hold against the drift back → fix it in words; most slide back and lose it
- Siddhis as a Continuum, Not Discrete Powers — knowledge → power → being as one amplifying continuum; Wolf Messing's psychological invisibility as the in-between
- Concentration as the Direct Method — trataka and past it; head = peace-descent, heart = divine-presence; the exercise is scaffolding to be dropped
- Graded Infusion vs. Premature Experience — the silent-mind-panic: why a state given too fast frightens, and why premature powers bind
- The Psychic Being as Foundation for Siddhi Safety — the deepest aspiration is the doorway; organize life around it before the powers
- Gratitude and Continuous Opening — desperation opens you, relief closes you before the help finishes; gratitude makes opening continuous
- The Record of Yoga Will-Experiments — the diary as lab notebook: the ant, the crow, the boy, the dog, the newspaper-verified healing
- Tamas — the Resistance Signature and Its Timing — reading resistance by its timing: immediate / delayed / requires-renewal as a map of how deep the tamas runs
- Belief-Injection vs. Will-Compulsion — when force fails, change the referent: "this is not the same piece" — perception-change as its own technique
Transmission, the Subtle Body & Discernment
How powers and states pass from one consciousness to another — and how to tell the real thing from its vital counterfeit.
Siddhi by Other Means — Technology, Tantra, Music
The powers replicated, rented, or channelled through something other than freed consciousness — and why each leaves you dependent.
Cross-tradition note: the Nāth / Rasa-Siddha tradition pages (the perfected beings, alchemy, lineage, Vidyādhara cosmology) live in the WarYoga & Nāth Alchemy hub and the Yoga & Tantra History hub — this hub is the powers themselves, not the lineage that pursued them.
