The Hadza Hunter Comes Home Empty-Handed Again. He Will Try Again Tomorrow.

The Hadza hunter is gone for four hours, walking through East African savanna woodland with a bow and poisoned arrows, looking for large game. Most days he comes back with nothing. His chances of bringing down anything substantial on a given day are about one in thirty. When he does bring something back, the meat is shared widely across the band — his immediate family does not get extra. His children are not better fed than other children. He spends most of his daylight hours doing work that, on most days, produces no calories for anyone.

Why is he doing this?

There are at least two evolutionary stories that fit the pattern, and they make different predictions about what's actually going on. The first story — the hunting hypothesis — argues that hunting drove the emergence of modern humans by enabling male provisioning of mates and children. The second story — the show-off hypothesis — argues that hunting evolved as a costly display of male quality, paid back through status, sexual access, and political alliance rather than through direct food provisioning. Both stories have evidence. Both might be partly right. Buss treats them as complementary rather than mutually exclusive, while flagging the empirical pattern that pushes hard against pure provisioning.1

The disagreement matters beyond ethnography. If hunting is primarily provisioning, then the human male is, in evolutionary terms, mostly a parental investor — a creature whose mating psychology is shaped by long-term relationships and child-rearing. If hunting is primarily show-off, then the human male is, in evolutionary terms, mostly a status-seeker — a creature whose mating psychology is shaped by display, prestige, and short-term sexual access. Most working evolutionary psychologists now think the human male is both, but the proportions matter for what kinds of psychological mechanisms get prioritized in the discipline's work.

State the two hypotheses precisely.

The hunting hypothesis — Tooby and DeVore 1987 — argues that the transition from foraging to large-game hunting drove the emergence of modern humans.2 Hunting selected for cooperative coalitions among men. Cooperative hunting required communication, which selected for language. Hunting yielded calorie-dense, transportable food, which selected for male provisioning of mates and children, which produced unusually high paternal investment for a primate. The food sharing required for successful hunting selected for reciprocal-altruism mechanisms. The skill required selected for tool-making and tool-using cognitive abilities. The hunting hypothesis treats hunting as a single causal node from which a cascade of distinctively human traits flowed.

The provisioning hypothesis is the specific application of the hunting hypothesis to mating psychology.3 It predicts that men evolved to hunt as a strategy for feeding their wives and children, and that women evolved preferences for men who could provision. The prediction works on a clean cost-benefit calculation: meat is calorie-dense and transportable, women cannot easily transport low-calorie food long distances while pregnant or carrying infants, and a man who reliably brings meat back from the hunt increases his children's survival chances. Selection on this pattern over evolutionary time built both male hunting effort and female preference for provisioning men.

The show-off hypothesis — Hawkes 1991 — argues that hunting is not primarily provisioning.4 Hawkes's reasoning starts from two observed features of hunting in actual hunter-gatherer societies. First, large game produces meat in bonanzas — more than a hunter and his immediate family can consume before it spoils. Second, hunting success is highly variable — a hunter who succeeds one week may fail for the next several. Combined, these features mean that meat cannot be efficiently used as private provisioning. The economically rational thing for the hunter to do with a windfall of meat is share it widely — but if he does, his own family doesn't get extra benefit from his hunting effort.

Hawkes's resolution: men hunt not to feed their families directly but to display the qualities that make them valuable allies and mates. Successful hunters become high-status. Women prefer to live near them, side with them in disputes, provide health care for their children, and offer sexual favors. The "payoff" is not in calories but in social standing and reproductive opportunities downstream of social standing. "Men may choose risky endeavors, not in spite of, but partly because the gamble gives them the chance to claim favors they can win by showing off."4

The two hypotheses make different empirical predictions. Provisioning predicts that hunters' immediate families benefit disproportionately from their hunting success. Show-off predicts that hunters' immediate families do not benefit disproportionately, but hunters themselves benefit through status and mating opportunities. The empirical pattern in actual hunter-gatherer societies tends to favor show-off on the first prediction. Hadza hunters' families do not get more meat than other families; meat is shared widely. Successful hunters do, however, gain prestige, social alliances, and access to more and better mates.5

Buss's resolution: the two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive. Men can hunt for both reasons simultaneously. Some hunting effort goes to family provisioning; some goes to status display. The empirical question is the proportions, and the proportions vary across societies and contexts. !Kung Bushmen hunters appear to gain both status benefits and provisioning benefits; their families do get differential access to the meat hunters bring back.6 Hadza hunters appear to gain mostly status benefits. The two patterns are consistent with the same underlying mechanism if the mechanism is sensitive to social structure — sometimes provisioning, sometimes display, depending on what the local social context permits.

A third hypothesis sits alongside the first two. The gathering hypothesis — Tanner and Zihlman — argues that women's gathering work, not men's hunting, was the primary driver of human emergence.7 Stone tools were invented for digging and gathering plant foods, not for hunting and butchering. Containers were invented to transport gathered food. Hunting came later. The gathering hypothesis is a corrective against the early-twentieth-century overemphasis on male hunting as the engine of human evolution. Buss treats it as a useful corrective that nevertheless cannot account for several facts: the universal sexual division of labor with men hunting and women gathering, the unusual male parental investment in human pair-bonds, the structure of the human gut for processing meat, and the human penetration of environments lacking plant resources (the Inuit live almost entirely on animal meat).

Evidence

Take the cross-species comparison first.8 Chimpanzees consume about 4 percent of their diet as meat, mostly from opportunistic predation on small monkeys. Human groups consume 20-40 percent meat in their diets, and up to 90 percent during cold hunting seasons when plant foods are unavailable. The shift in dietary proportions matters because it required physical and behavioral changes that didn't happen in chimps. Human guts evolved smaller colons and larger small intestines, characteristic of a more meat-rich diet. Human teeth show wear patterns consistent with meat consumption rather than primarily fibrous plant matter.

Modern hunter-gatherers preserve patterns that approximate ancestral conditions.8 The Aka Pygmies of the Central African Republic spend about 56 percent of their subsistence time hunting, 27 percent gathering, and 17 percent processing food. The !Kung of Botswana average 40 percent of their diet from hunting, with extremes ranging from below 20 percent in lean seasons to over 90 percent in successful hunting seasons. The Ache of Paraguay show similar ratios. Across these societies, hunting is consistently a male activity and gathering is consistently a female activity, with meat shared more widely than gathered food.

The archaeological record extends the pattern back about 2 million years.8 Stone tools at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania were found with cut marks on large-animal bones, demonstrating that early hominins were butchering large game by the late Pliocene. The tools were Oldowan flake tools — simple but effective for cutting through hide and detaching meat from bone. The pattern at Olduvai and at similar sites elsewhere shows that meat-eating and tool use co-evolved over the past 2 million years.

Take the Ache data as the worked test of the show-off hypothesis.4 Hill and Kaplan lived with the Ache for years, observing foraging trips between 1980 and 1985. The pattern: meat from the hunt is distributed widely across the group, while gathered food is consumed primarily by the gatherer's immediate family. Hawkes 1991 reports that 84 percent of resources acquired by men were shared outside the immediate family, compared to 58 percent of foods gathered by women. The asymmetry is the show-off hypothesis's central evidence — men's hunting effort does not differentially benefit their own families, so the "payoff" must come from somewhere else.

Take the Hadza data as the second worked test.9 Hawkes, O'Connell, and Blurton Jones found that Hadza men spend about four hours each day hunting, primarily for large game. When meat is brought back, it is shared widely. Hunters' families do not get more than other families. Pure provisioning is falsified by the data. What does succeed is status and prestige: successful Hadza hunters gain social standing that translates into political alliances, deference from other men, and greater mating success.

Take the Smith 2004 cross-society analysis as a third worked test.9 The five-society sample (Ache, Hadza, !Kung, Lamalera of Indonesia, Meriam of Australia) shows a consistent pattern: better hunters have more mates, more desirable mates, and higher rates of offspring survival. The mate-quality and offspring-survival advantages are the show-off hypothesis's predicted reproductive payoff. The pattern holds across cultures with different ecologies, different social structures, and different specific hunting practices.

The provisioning hypothesis is not falsified by these data. Some societies — !Kung Bushmen, for example — show a pattern in which hunters' families do receive differential access to the meat their men bring back.6 Wiessner 2002 documents this. The two hypotheses can be reconciled by recognizing that local social structure determines which payoff dominates. In societies where meat distribution is rigorously egalitarian, show-off dominates. In societies where some private retention is permitted, provisioning contributes. The underlying psychological mechanism is sensitive to context.

Tensions

The hardest tension is empirical: across most well-studied hunter-gatherer societies, the show-off hypothesis fits the data better than the pure provisioning hypothesis, but the textbook EP framing of human male psychology continues to emphasize provisioning. Provisioning is the simpler story. It maps cleanly onto Trivers's parental-investment framework. It connects directly to women's preferences for resource-rich partners (which are robust and cross-cultural). The story is conceptually tidy. The data are messier. Resolving the tension requires accepting that human male hunting psychology is calibrated for both private provisioning and public display, with proportions varying by context.

A second tension runs around the gathering hypothesis. Gathering provides the majority of calories in most hunter-gatherer societies — Marlow's data suggest more than 35 percent of modern hunter-gatherer diets come from gathered plant foods.7 If calories are what selection cares about, gathering should have driven human emergence, not hunting. The hunting hypothesis's defenders respond that the unique features of hunting — calorie-dense food, cooperative coordination requirements, language, tool use, male provisioning, sexual division of labor — are what made hunting a prime mover even though it provided fewer calories. The dispute is about which contributions to human emergence were transformative rather than merely incremental, and the data underdetermine the answer.

A third tension is about the masculinity of hunting itself. The universal sexual division of labor in hunter-gatherer societies (men hunt, women gather) has been argued to be culturally constructed rather than biologically determined. The biological position points to pregnancy and lactation making hunting more costly for women — running long distances chasing large game with an infant strapped to your back is harder than gathering plants. The cultural position points to specific societies where women hunt small game and to historical variability in the strictness of the division. The textbook treats the division as broadly biological while acknowledging variation.

A fourth tension concerns whether the show-off interpretation can be generalized beyond hunter-gatherer societies. In modern industrial societies, men's status-display behavior takes radically different forms — financial success, athletic achievement, professional prestige, conspicuous consumption. If the underlying psychology is show-off, then modern male status-striving is doing the same evolved work that ancestral hunting did. The display has changed; the underlying mechanism hasn't. This is a productive frame for understanding modern male behavior but requires careful empirical work to test rigorously.

A fifth tension is about cross-cultural variation. Different hunter-gatherer societies show different patterns of hunting effort, meat distribution, and reproductive payoff. The Hadza and Ache patterns favor show-off; the !Kung pattern shows mixed provisioning and status payoff. The proportions vary. A complete theory of male hunting psychology would specify what social conditions tip the proportions which way. Buss's textbook does not develop this systematically.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Tooby and DeVore supplied the original hunting hypothesis in 1987 as a framework for understanding human emergence.2 The framework treats hunting as a single causal node from which language, cooperation, tool use, parental investment, and male coalitions all cascade. Buss treats the framework as broadly correct while noting that pure provisioning has been falsified by show-off data.

Hawkes's show-off hypothesis (1991, 2001) is the most important challenge to the pure provisioning version of the hunting hypothesis.4 Hawkes does not deny that men hunt, that hunting requires cooperation, or that hunting selected for various distinctively human traits. Hawkes denies that the primary payoff for the individual hunter is in providing food for his immediate family. Buss treats Hawkes as decisive on the empirical pattern in many hunter-gatherer societies while preserving Tooby and DeVore's broader framework as still useful for explaining hunting's role in human emergence overall.

The convergence between Tooby/DeVore and Hawkes runs underneath their disagreement: both treat hunting as a major selection pressure, both recognize that hunting selected for distinctive human traits, both treat the emergence of cooperative male coalitions as central. The disagreement is about which payoff structure made hunting reproductively profitable for individual men. The disagreement is empirical, not theoretical, and the data have come down on Hawkes's side for most cases — even though Tooby and DeVore's framework remains the field's general orientation.

Tanner and Zihlman's gathering hypothesis sits as a methodological corrective.7 Their work pushed back against an early-twentieth-century overemphasis on hunting as the only engine of human evolution. The corrective worked. Modern EP recognizes that gathering, hunting, tool use, language, social cooperation, and pair-bonding all co-evolved, with no single one being the prime mover. Where Tanner and Zihlman overcorrect — treating gathering as more important than hunting — Buss pushes back. The textbook's verdict: gathering matters, but cannot account for several facts about modern human anatomy, social structure, and psychology that hunting does account for.

Wiessner 2002 contributes evidence that complicates the show-off vs. provisioning split.6 Among the !Kung Bushmen, successful hunters do gain status (consistent with show-off) and their families do get differential access to meat (consistent with provisioning). The two payoffs are not exclusive. Wiessner's data are part of the basis for Buss's compromise position: men hunt for both reasons, with the proportions varying by context.

Where Buss is silent and the vault has work to do: the show-off / provisioning distinction has implications for modern men that the textbook does not develop. A modern man's status-display behavior — financial accumulation, athletic achievement, professional prestige — is doing the same evolved work that ancestral hunting did. The display changes; the underlying mechanism stays. If most modern male behavior in display contexts is show-off rather than provisioning, the practical implications for modern relationships, careers, and self-understanding are significant. Cross-Domain Handshakes

The show-off hypothesis maps directly onto contemporary status-display economics in a way that produces sharp predictions for modern male behavior. Substitute "founder" for "hunter," substitute "exit" for "successful hunt," substitute "social media post about the exit" for "meat shared widely with the band," and the structure is preserved.

The successful tech founder posts about his exit on social media. He does not, in fact, distribute his proceeds widely. But the post functions as a costly signal — it advertises the founder's quality to the broader community of potential allies and mates, and it generates downstream payoffs in the form of status, partnership opportunities, and dating-market access. The mechanism is the same mechanism Hadza hunters use. The display has shifted from animal carcass to LinkedIn announcement. The underlying psychology has not shifted at all.

This connects to status display and to the power, authority, and social hub. Modern status display catalogs read differently when each technique is annotated as the modern equivalent of a specific ancestral display. Conspicuous consumption is the modern equivalent of bonanza-distribution. Professional achievement is the modern equivalent of hunting prowess. Athletic dominance in modern sports is the modern equivalent of hunting dominance in ancestral life.

The insight neither domain generates alone: the modern male status-anxiety that produces overwork, conspicuous consumption, and competitive displays is not modern in origin. It is an ancient hunting psychology firing on modern inputs. The mechanism doesn't know the inputs have changed. It is doing the same work it did 50,000 years ago, with displays calibrated for a different audience and different reward structure. The vault's BM and behavioral-economics pages get sharper when re-read with the show-off hypothesis as the underlying mechanism.

A second handshake runs to the integral storytelling hub and the question of why hero narratives are so consistent across cultures. The hero who undertakes a costly quest, returns with a prize, and earns the bride is the show-off hypothesis dramatized. Joseph Campbell's monomyth pattern — call to adventure, ordeal, transformation, return with the boon — is structurally a hunting-and-show-off narrative. The hunter goes out, faces danger, returns with something the community values, and gains social standing as a result.

The narrative resonance of the pattern across radically different cultures (Greek hero quests, Norse sagas, African Anansi tales, Pacific Islander heroic stories) is consistent with a deep evolved psychology that reads "successful costly quest → status and mating reward" as a meaningful sequence. Stories that match the pattern activate the underlying show-off mechanism in audiences. The audience's mate-evaluation system reads the hero as high-mate-value; the audience's status-evaluation system reads the hero as high-status. Both systems are firing on engineered narrative cues.

The insight neither domain generates alone: the universal appeal of hero narratives is partly EEA-calibrated reading machinery firing on culturally constructed inputs. Storytellers are doing what advertisers do — engineering inputs that fire ancestral mechanisms. Knowing this changes how you read both stories and ads. The vault's writing-craft and storytelling pages get sharper when annotated with the specific mechanisms each narrative move targets.

The Live Edge

The Sharpest Implication.

If you are a modern man working long hours, accumulating signals of professional achievement, posting about your wins on social media, and feeling driven to compete — your underlying psychology is calibrated for hunting that you will never do. The mechanism is reading modern status-display opportunities as the analog of bonanza-meat distribution to a band of fifty people. The mechanism cannot tell that the audience has changed, that the band has dissolved into a global social-network, that the rewards are not the same rewards.

This produces a specific kind of suffering. The signals you broadcast — money, achievement, prestige — do not, in fact, reliably attract the high-quality mates and stable allies the mechanism evolved to expect them to attract. The audience is too large. The competition is too dispersed. The social rewards arrive intermittently, anonymously, and without the recurring face-to-face status updates the mechanism was tuned to consume. The work goes in. The expected output doesn't come back.

This is not your failure. It is the same mismatch pattern that produces every other felt suffering of modern life: ancient mechanism, modern environment. The mechanism is doing what selection built it to do. The environment has decoupled the inputs from the rewards.

The corollary cuts the other way. Some modern environments do reproduce the conditions the show-off mechanism was tuned for. Tight-knit professional communities, recurring social groups where status is updated face to face, organizations small enough to track who contributed what — these are environments where the ancient mechanism's outputs still pay off. Choosing to operate primarily in such environments is choosing to put your equipment to work in conditions it was actually built for. The decision is not about working less. It is about working in places where the work returns the rewards the mechanism was calibrated to expect.

Generative Questions.

If show-off is the dominant payoff structure for hunter-gatherer male hunting, and if modern status-display is the same mechanism firing on modern inputs, what does correctly calibrated show-off look like in a modern environment? Not all status display is equally adaptive. Some forms produce real reward; others produce burnout without reward. The diagnostic for which is which is open work.

The provisioning hypothesis has been partly retired by data, but the psychological belief that men should provision their families is robust across cultures and across historical time. Where does the belief come from if the underlying mechanism is mostly show-off? Possibilities: the belief is a cultural overlay on show-off psychology; the belief tracks a different mechanism that operates alongside show-off; the proportions in the original mechanism are still substantially provisioning even though the marginal effect of any given hunt is show-off. Which is right matters for marriage and family policy.

If hero narratives are show-off psychology dramatized, then the contemporary collapse of hero narratives in literary and political life maps onto something specific in the EEA-mismatch story. Fragmented, anti-heroic, postmodern narratives may be either an updating away from outdated psychology or a frustrated misfire of psychology that has nothing in modern life to attach to. Distinguishing requires careful diagnostic work the vault could undertake.
