Everything in this cosmology is enormous and none of it is portable. Ein Sof, the contraction and expansion, the vessels breaking, the second ray, the four worlds. You can read about it for months and have nothing you could actually use on a Tuesday evening in a chair.
There is one short thing, and it is thirteen lines long. It runs the whole descent from the Timeless down to a Seed, turns at a hinge, and comes back out through Being, Meaning, Motion, Action and Deed into Light. So the question is a practical one about portability. Is there a short thing you can say that takes you all the way down and back?
The reason a formula is needed at all is stated first, and it turns on an etymology used earlier in this same material. We can speculate about the Eternal Nothing ad infinitum and never really understand It — that is, never stand It under our minds.1
That is a precise objection rather than a mystical one. Understanding, taken literally, is a matter of getting underneath something so that it rests on you. Whatever the Eternal Nothing is, nothing can be got underneath it, so the ordinary operation is unavailable by definition.
Which rules out thinking about it altogether. Speculation can continue for ever and will not arrive, not because it is insufficiently clever but because it is the wrong operation for the object. So something other than thought has to be used, and what gets offered is thirteen lines and a chair.
The alternative is given as a posture, and the instruction is almost aggressively unspectacular. When we close our eyes, sitting in a calm and relaxed manner, not doing anything, we might sense and perceive It.1
Not doing anything is the operative phrase, and it is a real instruction rather than a throwaway. No visualisation, no breathing count, no name to repeat, no image to hold. The exercises elsewhere in this tradition are dense with technique, and this one specifically removes it.
Then the aim, which uses the distinction from earlier in the same section. We allow ourselves to invoke a state of consciousness which will help us to be It.1 Not to perceive it, not to approach it — to be it, which is the only relation available to something you cannot get underneath. The posture is empty because the target cannot be approached, and the only remaining move is to occupy it.
The formula opens with a descent, and each line puts the next thing inside the one before:
In the Timeless is the Formless In the Formless is the Darkness In the Darkness is the Stillness In the Stillness is the Silence In the Silence is the Seed2
The grammar is doing the work. In X is Y — five times, each step nesting further in, so nothing is left behind and nothing is travelled to. You are not descending through levels. You are finding what was already inside the thing you just found.
And the sequence goes from the largest abstraction to the smallest concrete object. Timeless, Formless, Darkness, Stillness, Silence — and then a Seed, which is a thing, small, with something in it. Every step before it names an absence: no time, no shape, no light, no motion, no sound. The one word in the descent you could hold in your hand is the one at the bottom.
Between the two halves stands a single line, and it is three letters: I.A.O.2 Nothing is said about it here. It is given without gloss, in a passage that glosses almost everything else, and the honest thing is to record that and stop.
What can be observed is only its position. It sits exactly at the turn — after the Seed, before the emergence — and it is the only line that is not a sentence. Whatever it does, it is what happens between the descent ending and the coming-out beginning. Everything above it goes in, everything below it comes out, and it is the one word on which the direction reverses.
The second half reverses the grammar, and the change is the whole point:
Out of Nothing comes the Being Out of Being comes the Meaning Out of Meaning comes the Motion Out of Motion comes the Action Out of Action comes the Deed2
Out of X comes Y — five times. The first half nested inward and nothing moved. This half produces, and each thing leaves the one before it rather than sitting inside it. Descent by containment, emergence by generation.
The sequence itself is worth reading slowly, because it is a complete account of how anything gets done. Being first, then Meaning, then Motion, then Action, then Deed. Meaning arrives before movement, and movement before action — so nothing in this ladder starts with doing, and a deed is four steps downstream of simply being.
The emergence ends in a single word with an exclamation mark: LIGHT!2 It is the only shouted line in thirteen. And it sits where the vessels shattered in the cosmology, at the moment something bursts out.
Then three more lines, quieter, in a different pattern again:
And of Light — Law And of Law — Love And of Love — Life2
Those are the only three that pair by kind rather than by containment or generation. Law comes of Light, Love of Law, and Life of Love — which puts law between illumination and love, in the position most people would give to the opposite arrangement.
Count the whole and the shape is deliberate. Five in, a hinge, five out, a burst, and three that follow from it. Thirteen lines, and you can learn them in an afternoon.
You want one thing you can actually do with this cosmology, in a chair, tonight.
Set up exactly as instructed and no more. Eyes closed, calm, relaxed, not doing anything. Resist the urge to add a technique to it, because the absence of technique is the technique here. Everything else in this tradition is dense with method, and this is the one place the method is removed.
Then take the descent one line at a time, and let the grammar lead. In the Timeless is the Formless — do not travel anywhere, look for the formless inside the timeless. Each line asks you to find the next thing already present in the last, and nothing is left behind.
Then stop at the Seed and stay there, because it is the only concrete noun in the whole descent. Everything above it is an absence — no time, no form, no light, no motion, no sound. The Seed is the first thing that is a thing, and the formula puts it at the bottom rather than the top.
Then let the second half run outward without steering it. Being, Meaning, Motion, Action, Deed — and notice how far down the list a deed sits. If you find yourself starting at Action, you have skipped three rungs, which is what most days consist of.
And use the last triad as a check rather than a practice. Light, then Law, then Love, then Life. If what you are doing has love in it but no law under it, this sequence says something is missing between them.
What is given here is a formula and a posture, with almost no commentary attached — the invocation is quoted and left to work, which is consistent with a text that says the thing cannot be reached by speculation.
Its strength is entirely structural, and the structure is checkable by anyone. Five nesting lines, a hinge, five generating lines, a burst, and a three-line coda. The grammar changes exactly where the direction changes, which is the sort of thing that indicates composition rather than accumulation.
Tension left open. I.A.O. is given without any explanation at all, in the pivotal position, in material that glosses Hebrew terms carefully throughout. It is a well-known formula elsewhere in the Western esoteric stream. Nothing here says what it is doing, why the turn needs it, or whether a reciter is meant to say it at all.
🚩 PRACTITIONER SOURCE. 🚩 The invocation is quoted with a source note in the original and no author named on the page. 🚩 Nothing states how the formula is to be used — whether spoken aloud, read once, or repeated — so the posture is specified and the delivery is not.
Take the not doing anything instruction at full strength and it sits oddly in this body of work. Fifty named exercises, counts, postures, head motions, letter pairings, vowels in a set order — and here, at the point where the tradition addresses its own highest object, the instruction is to sit calmly and add nothing.
Now set that against what the formula itself is. Thirteen composed lines, with a controlled grammar, a hinge, and a shouted word at the peak. Somebody built that, and built it carefully. So the sitter is doing nothing while something quite elaborate is being done to them.
The two resolve if you read the formula as doing the work so that the practitioner does not have to. It supplies the structure, so the sitter can supply nothing — which is the only arrangement that lets a person be still and be led at the same time.
What that leaves open is the risk that comes with it. A structure you are not building is a structure you are not examining, and a formula that carries somebody from Timeless to Life in thirteen lines is making a great many claims while its hearer is deliberately not thinking. Nothing here acknowledges that, and the next handshake is where it bites.
The Magic Power of Words and Formulas — behavioral-mechanics.
Le Bon: a pyramid far loftier than that of old Cheops could be raised merely with the bones of men who have been victims of the power of words and formulas. He is naming a body count, not being decorative. Deus vult, liberté égalité fraternité, Lebensraum, Year Zero — each a short phrase, vague enough to mean what its hearer most wants, charged with image and emotion, and immune to argument.
Every property in that list belongs to the invocation on this page. Short. Rhythmic. Vague enough that the Formless and the Seed mean what the sitter supplies. Charged with image. And recited in a state explicitly cultivated to be non-argumentative — eyes closed, calm, not doing anything.
So the mechanism is the same, and the difference is entirely in the deployment. Le Bon's formulas are said to crowds, to produce action. This one is said by a person to themselves, to produce a state. And that difference turns out to be about inspectability rather than content: a formula you recite alone in a chair is one you can stop mid-line and examine, and a formula chanted in a crowd cannot be examined while it is working, because the crowd is part of the mechanism.
Which yields the practical guard, and it is worth carrying well beyond this tradition. The safety of a formula is a fact about the conditions of its use, not about its words. Any of these thirteen lines could be turned into a slogan tomorrow. What keeps them from working that way is that they are said in solitude, slowly, by somebody who can put the page down — and a practice that moves them into a hall, a chant, and a crowd has changed something the words themselves will not warn you about.
Sharpest implication. The descent runs Timeless, Formless, Darkness, Stillness, Silence — five absences — and lands on a Seed, the one concrete thing in it. Which means this cosmology puts the smallest, most definite object at the bottom of its own emptiness, and everything that follows comes out of that seed rather than out of the vastness above it.
Generative questions.
