The Tithi is the unit of desire-that-caused-rebirth. The Karaṇa is half a Tithi — six degrees of Sun-Moon separation. If the Tithi is one stretch of road, the Karaṇa is the specific half-mile of that road that you are walking right now. There are 30 Tithis in a month, therefore 60 Karaṇas — but the Karaṇa-system only has 11 named Karaṇas, with the same 7 movable Karaṇas cycling through most of the month and 4 fixed Karaṇas confined to the darkest new-moon period.
The Karaṇa is the Pṛthvi-tattva (earth-element) limb of the Pañcāṅga. Larsen at line 1408: "Karaṇa means doing, making, effecting, causing and refers to the karma done in life. From the planet presiding over the Karaṇa we can determine the karma yoga available for us to do, and also whether we will be successful in doing so."1 The earth-element specifies what you are operationally going to do with your life — what kind of karma-yoga is available to you, and what kind of ground you have to stand on while doing it.
Four fixed Karaṇas occupy the darkest segment of the lunar cycle — the second half of Kṛṣṇa Caturdaśī through the first half of Śukla Pratipadā. These are: Śakuni (lorded by Rāhu, deity Brahmā), Catuṣpāda (lorded by Ketu, deity Viṣṇu), Nāga (lorded by Rāhu, deity Maheśa), and Kintughna (lorded by Ketu, deity Sūrya). All four are lorded by the nodes. The four-fixed-Karaṇas during the darkest-Moon-period are cursed — birth during these Karaṇas carries specific risk-patterns for financial-life and reputation.
Seven movable Karaṇas cycle continuously through the bulk of the lunar month: Bava (Sun), Bālava (Moon), Kaulava (Mars), Taitula (Mercury), Garija (Jupiter), Vaṇija (Venus), and Viṣṭi / Bhadrā (Saturn). The Viṣṭi-Bhadrā Karaṇa carries its own specific architecture — the eight-name-Bhadrā-Kālachakra movement that occupies a specific direction-of-the-eight-cardinal-directions per occurrence.
Larsen at line 1450-1453: "It was during these four Karaṇa that Soma, the Moon God, kidnapped Tārā and therefore also the nodes enact their negatives over the Moon during this time. Birth during these last four Karaṇa risk causing financial problems."2
The Tārā-Soma-Bṛhaspati myth that grounds the Yoga-limb also grounds the four-cursed-Karaṇa-doṣa. The kidnapping happened during this specific Karaṇa-window. The nodes, who modify the Nakṣatra-lord-derivation and rule the directions of grasping-and-letting-go, intensify their negative-influence during this period.
The doṣa actualizes as: financial-problems (from the Rāśi of Rāhu and the Nakṣatra of Ketu in the chart); infamy-and-scandal (from Rāhu); resource-deprivation (from Ketu); career-instability around the Ārūḍha-Lagna placement.
The Tiger Woods case (lines 1455-1504) is Larsen's worked-example. Birth during Śakuni-Brahmā Karaṇa lorded by Rāhu. Rāhu placed in 2nd house in Libra — promises great wealth through international-travel-career (Rāhu in airy-sign + 2nd house). The career-rise pattern actualized: Junior World Golf Championship 6 times, professional debut, USD 60 million in endorsements by 1996. But — the Rāhu-as-Karaṇa-lord with Rāśi-Dṛṣṭi-on-AL also produces the infamy-from-Karaṇa-source pattern. November 2009: the affair-scandal. December 2009: 120 different women's claims. Loss of endorsement-deals estimated USD 5-12 billion.
The chart had both patterns simultaneously. Lagna-only read would have seen the wealth-and-fame potential and not predicted the cascading scandal. The Karaṇa-as-Pṛthvi-tattva read says: the ground you are doing your karma-yoga on is unstable; the wealth-and-fame are coming with structural-scandal-architecture baked in.
The seventh movable Karaṇa — Viṣṭi, also called Bhadrā — has its own dedicated treatment (lines 1506-1611). Bhadrā is a Devī born from Śiva's body for fighting Daityas (asuras). She is depicted black, donkey-faced, three-legged, seven-armed, long-tailed. After doing Śiva's bidding she resides in his ear as an ornament. Her astrological-position is the seventh Karaṇa.
She has eight occurrences per month, each named separately:
Bhadrā moves through eight directions of the Kālachakra during these eight occurrences. The directions matter operationally: she begins in the west (Varuṇa's direction), then moves to the south-east, north, south-west, north-east, south, north-west, and finally east (Indra's direction) at her eighth occurrence.
Mouth and Tail of Bhadrā — the Karaṇa is divided into four parts; one part contains Bhadrā's mouth (most inauspicious), one contains her tail (auspicious), and the others contain her body. The mouth-position moves through the four-quarters across the eight occurrences. Specific tables (line 1556-1568) specify mouth-and-tail positions per Bhadrā-name.
Operationally, the Bhadrā Karaṇa is to be avoided for new beginnings — especially the mouth-portion. The tail-portion is paradoxically auspicious (the tail is the settled part of Bhadrā's body after her movement).
The Karaṇa chapter introduces a Larsen-distinctive operational-method that appears nowhere else in the practitioner-lineage corpus held in the vault. Lines 1895-1899:
"Should a scenario arise that neither lord nor kāraka of the house in question can support the activity, the tradition teaches the next step to be to analyse the number graha. The number graha is ascertained by: 1. Adding the values of all the grahas joined the house in question. The value of the Graha is based on the Vārachakra. 2. From the number attained divide by nine, ignore the quotient and keep the remainder. 3. Deduct the number attained from nine. This is the result and the number will reveal which of the Grahas in the Gunachakra has become the number graha."3
This is the backstop method when the standard lord-and-kāraka analysis fails to deliver. The Vāra-Chakra (the 9-planet weekday-order) and Guṇa-Chakra (numerology-order) work together to identify the operating graha. The method is treated in the Vāra-and-Karaṇa-as-Pṛthvi-tattva discussion because the Karaṇa is the karma-yoga-doing layer where operational-fallbacks matter most.
This is the kind of method-of-last-resort that distinguishes lineage-trained practitioners from book-trained practitioners. The book-trained practitioner reads lord-and-kāraka-of-house and stops; the lineage-trained practitioner reads lord-and-kāraka-of-house and, if both fail to deliver, knows to consult the number-graha. The method is Rath-lineage-transmission per Larsen's framing.
A young professional sits across from you. They have a job they hate. They want to know what kind of work they should do.
You open their chart. You calculate the Karaṇa of their birth (Sun-Moon separation modulo 12°, divided by 6°). You identify the Karaṇa-lord. You write: Karaṇa = [name], lord = [planet].
You check the lord's placement:
You check the Karaṇa-lord's house-position:
You check the Karaṇa-lord in the Daśāṃśa (D-10) chart. The D-10 reveals the focus-of-intentions in matters of work.
You assemble: "Your Karaṇa-lord is [planet] in [sign-element]. Your career-yoga-architecture is therefore [pattern]. The kind of work that will fulfill you and provide stable-ground is [specific-type]. Your current job is [aligned/misaligned] with this architecture; the specific signals of misalignment are [features]. Recommended career-direction-shifts: [actionable-recommendations]."
The reading takes 15-20 minutes. The information it produces is not available from standard 10th-house-only career analysis.
The Karaṇa-as-Pṛthvi-tattva mapping is at line 474 and elaborated in Chapter 1.4 (lines 1377-1611). The 4-fixed and 7-movable Karaṇa classification is at lines 1379-1383. The Karaṇa-lord table (Table 29 at line 1416) lists all 11 Karaṇa-lords. The 4-cursed-node-lorded-Karaṇa apparatus is at lines 1444-1453. The Bhadrā-Kālachakra-8-name architecture is at lines 1508-1582. The mouth-and-tail-of-Bhadrā apparatus is at lines 1542-1582. The Tiger Woods worked-example is at lines 1455-1504. The Number-Graha fallback method is at lines 1895-1899 (in the Vāra-Chakra section).
The 4-cursed-Karaṇa-doṣa is asserted as universally-applicable, but birth-during-these-Karaṇas does not always actualize the predicted financial-instability pattern. The Tiger Woods case actualized; other cases of birth during cursed-Karaṇas have stable financial-lives. The variability suggests the doṣa-actualization depends on additional chart-features (Ārūḍha-Lagna-relationship to the Karaṇa-lord; specific Dashā-period activation). Larsen acknowledges this implicitly by emphasizing the Ārūḍha-Lagna placement becomes pivotal (line 1453).
The Number-Graha fallback method is asserted as Rath-lineage transmission. It is not in other practitioner-lineage texts. Whether it is a Rath-lineage discovery, a Larsen-articulation of a tradition-method, or an SJC-internal pedagogical-tool is not clearly specified. Future verification against other Rath-lineage-sources would clarify.
The Karaṇa-as-Pṛthvi-tattva-career-and-karma-doing architecture is most-developed in Larsen within the vault. Foss's per-graha-mantra work does not treat Karaṇa. Kurczak/Fish reference Karaṇa in their Pañcāṅga background-treatment but do not develop the Bhadrā-Kālachakra architecture. Pai and DiCara do not treat Karaṇa as primary apparatus.
The convergence: Karaṇa-system itself (4 fixed + 7 movable, total 11 Karaṇas with specific lords) is consistent across sources. The split: only Larsen develops the Pṛthvi-tattva-career-architecture and the Bhadrā-8-name-Kālachakra-direction apparatus. Larsen's contribution is the operational-architecture layered onto the calendar-information that other sources treat as background.
The Karaṇa-as-Pṛthvi-tattva-karma-doing architecture parallels two domains where materially-grounded action is operationally significant.
psychology: Flow and Vocational Calling: Csikszentmihalyi and Shea — research on vocation-and-flow (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's Flow, Heather Shea's vocational-counseling work, the broader vocational-psychology literature) has demonstrated that career-satisfaction correlates with the match between the person's operational-temperament and the physical-and-social-substrate of the work they do. Some temperaments thrive in earthy-material-substrate work (craftsmanship, agriculture, engineering, embodied-skill); others in fluid-emotional-substrate work (counseling, healing, hospitality); others in airy-conceptual-substrate work (teaching, writing, strategy, travel); others in fiery-leadership-substrate work (command, public-presence, spiritual-leadership). The structural parallel to Larsen's Karaṇa-Pṛthvi-tattva reading is direct: both apparatuses identify element-of-the-work-substrate as operationally-significant for career-fit. The cross-domain insight neither lineage alone produces: contemporary vocational-psychology has approached the question through trait-and-interest-inventories (Holland's RIASEC, MBTI-derived vocational-tools, Strong's interest-inventory). The Vedic apparatus approaches it through chart-derived element-and-graha-architecture. Both apparatuses converge on the same underlying-recognition: career-satisfaction is not just about what you do but about the substrate-quality the work requires. The vault holds the parallel because it makes Larsen's reading intelligible-as-vocational-psychology. The Karaṇa-Pṛthvi-tattva architecture is not exotic-mysticism; it is a traditional-articulation of element-substrate-vocational-fit that contemporary vocational-psychology has empirically validated through different means. A reader holding both can use the Karaṇa-read to target the substrate-element that vocational-psychology-inventories would also specify — the methods converge on operationally-useful recommendations.
biology: Embodied Skill and Procedural Memory — neuroscience and motor-learning research has demonstrated that embodied-skill-acquisition is a distinct memory-and-learning system from declarative-knowledge-acquisition. Procedural memory operates through basal-ganglia and cerebellum systems with different time-courses, different consolidation-architectures, and different retention-patterns than the hippocampal-declarative-system. Daniel Schacter and Endel Tulving's work on the memory-systems-architecture demonstrated this; contemporary motor-learning research (David Lally, Anders Ericsson) has refined the understanding. The structural parallel to Larsen's Karaṇa-Pṛthvi-tattva-karma-doing reading is direct: the Karaṇa-system maps the operational-doing-substrate — what kind of karma-yoga-action the native is structurally-equipped for at the embodied level. The cross-domain insight: both apparatuses recognize that doing is operationally-distinct from thinking-about-doing. The Pṛthvi-tattva is the ground-element; embodied-skill is the ground-substrate of skilled-action. Both apparatuses identify the substrate-as-distinct-from-the-mental-overlay. The Vault holds the parallel because it normalizes the Karaṇa-as-action-substrate-architecture. The Karaṇa is not what-you-think-about-doing; it is what-your-body-and-life-are-structurally-equipped-to-do. Modern motor-learning research has empirically validated that the embodied-action-substrate is operationally-distinct from the declarative-thinking-overlay. Vedic-cosmology asserted the same structural distinction through the Pṛthvi-tattva-as-Karaṇa-limb architecture.
The Sharpest Implication
If the Karaṇa-Pṛthvi-tattva-career-architecture is accurate, then career-counseling that does not include element-substrate-matching is systematically incomplete. The dominant career-counseling-approach today (interest-inventories + skill-assessment + market-fit analysis) does not include the element-of-work-substrate as a primary variable. Larsen's apparatus suggests that substrate-fit is operationally more-important than interest-fit — interest can be cultivated; substrate-fit is structural. The implication for vocational-counseling: include element-substrate analysis as a foreground-variable. The Karaṇa-Pṛthvi-tattva-method takes 15 minutes to perform with a chart in hand; the information it provides is otherwise unavailable.
