You read a chart. The native asks whether they will have children. You check the 5th house — afflicted. You check the 5th lord — debilitated, combust, joined a malefic. You check the kāraka of children — Jupiter — also afflicted. Both the lord and the kāraka of the 5th house have failed to deliver. By standard rules, the prediction is no children. The native already has two children. The standard method is wrong.
Larsen names the next move at lines 1895-1899: "Should a scenario arise that neither lord nor kāraka of the house in question can support the activity, the tradition teaches the next step to be to analyse the number graha."1 When both standard significators fail, there is a fallback method using the Vāra-Chakra numerology. The method identifies a third significator — the Number-Graha — that may carry the activity.
This is the kind of method-of-last-resort that distinguishes lineage-trained practitioners from book-trained ones. The book-trained reads lord-and-kāraka and stops; the lineage-trained knows there is one more step.

This is the natural-speed-order of the 9 grahas, beginning from the slowest-orbit (Sun in earth-relative terms — actually Saturn slowest but the Sun is sequence-start by tradition) through the nodes. Note: this Vāra-Chakra-order is different from the Vāra-of-weekday-order (which has Mercury in 4th position and is identical here only in the first 7). The Vāra-Chakra adds Rāhu (8) and Ketu (9) at the end.
The Vāra-Chakra has multiple operational uses (Larsen at line 1841): "Not only is it the natural order referred to in the ancient astrological texts, but it also serves as a means to understand planetary yogas."
Larsen at line 1841-1851: "Here the principle is: add the number of the planets presiding weekdays together. If it's larger than nine, then deduct nine from this. The resultant number is the planet and deity blessing/cursing the yoga."2
Worked example 1: Jupiter-Mars yoga. Mars (3) + Jupiter (5) = 8 = Rāhu. The conjunction gives the blessings of the divine mother Durgā (Rāhu's Devatā). The deity-content of the yoga is therefore: divine-mother-blessing.
Worked example 2: Saturn-Mars yoga. Mars (3) + Saturn (7) = 10; 10 - 9 = 1 = Sun. The conjunction triggers the anger of Śiva (Sun's Devatā). The deity-content is: Śiva's-anger. The cosmological reasoning: Śiva's anger with Kāmadeva produced Kārtikeya; if Mars-Saturn yoga occurs in Saturn's signs, this can give blessing of being nursed by six Kṛttikā mothers or having six sisters (the Kārtikeya-birth pattern).
The method is generalizable across all 36+ pairwise-conjunctions. The deity-content of any conjunction is calculable via the Vāra-Chakra-number-sum apparatus.

So also count to the ninth from any planet in the Vāra chakra to ascertain the protector/kavacha of any planet. Example: In the Vāra chakra, the ninth Graha from the Sun is Ketu, hence spirituality, meditation, recluses, etc. become the source of protection for the soul/ātma. H.C. Andersen's 5th house has Sun, Mercury, Venus joined. Their Vāra-Chakra values: Sun=1, Mercury=4, Venus=6. Sum = 1+4+6 = 11. 11 / 9 = 1 remainder 2. 9 - 2 = 7. In the Guṇa-Chakra, position 7 = Ketu. Wait — actually the source text reads it as: 11 mod 9 = 2; 9 - 2 = 6... reading the source: "In this case Sun, Mercury and Venus are joined the fifth house. Their values in the Vārachakra are one, five and six respectively. Their addition becomes twelve and after division by nine the remainder becomes three. Removing three from nine we get six and in the Gunachakra the sixth Graha is Venus."
Wait — Larsen uses Mercury=5 here (Guṇa-Chakra value) not Mercury=4 (Vāra-Chakra value). On rereading: Larsen's example uses Vāra-Chakra Sun(1) + Mercury(4) + Venus(6) = 11, but the text says addition is 12 and remainder is 3. There may be a numerical inconsistency or the text uses Mercury=5 (the Guṇa-Chakra value for the calculation). Let me preserve Larsen's worked calculation as-stated: 12, remainder 3, 9-3 = 6, which is Venus in Guṇa-Chakra. The Number-Graha for the 5th house is therefore Venus.
The reading: Venus is not better-placed than the lord-and-kāraka — it is in the same destructive-yoga in the 5th house. The Number-Graha confirms: the 5th house cannot deliver children. The author neither married nor had children of his own despite strong desire (Jupiter retrograde in Lagna aspecting 5th and 7th).
In the Queen Marie Antoinette case (line 1922), the same destructive-yoga affects the 5th house (Sun + Venus). But Jupiter (5L and Putra-Kāraka) is well-placed in 4th house and grants children. The destructive yoga does not block the 5th house in this case because Jupiter is independently strong enough.

Step 1. Standard read. Check 5th house, 5L, and Putra-Kāraka Jupiter. Are all three healthy?
Step 2. If 5L or Jupiter fail, but the other is strong, predict children-with-difficulties per the strong-significator. Standard method.
Step 3. If both 5L and Jupiter fail, escalate to Number-Graha.
Step 4. Identify all grahas joined the 5th house in the natal Rāśi chart. Note each graha's Vāra-Chakra value.
Step 5. Sum the values. Divide by 9, keep remainder. Subtract remainder from 9. The result identifies the Number-Graha position in the Guṇa-Chakra.
Step 6. The Guṇa-Chakra-position-graha is the Number-Graha for the 5th house. Check its strength and placement. Is it strong? Predict children-via-this-graha's-quality. Is it weak? Predict no-children-from-natural-means; the family may form via adoption (if Number-Graha = Saturn or Ketu) or through unusual circumstances (if Number-Graha = Rāhu or Mercury).
Step 7. Apply the same architecture to any other house-question where lord and kāraka both fail. The Number-Graha method generalizes across all house-readings.
The method takes 5 minutes when practiced. Most charts will not require it; the cases where it is needed are exactly the cases where standard methods produce wrong predictions.
The cosmological reasoning is subtle. The Vāra-Chakra represents the natural-element-order-of-the-grahas in the cosmos. When a house has multiple grahas joined to it, those grahas combine in a specific element-quality. A practitioner not using the Number-Graha method shows specific failures:
They make wrong predictions in cases where lord-and-kāraka both fail. The standard method says no-X; the chart-actualization sometimes is yes-X; the Number-Graha would have specified the third-significator.
They cannot explain paradoxical chart-fulfillments. The chart looks like it should not deliver; the native receives. Without the Number-Graha method, the practitioner attributes the fulfillment to grace or exception rather than recognizing a structural-significator they missed.
They cannot use Vāra-Chakra-yoga-deity-readings. The deity-content of conjunctions is calculable; the practitioner who does not know the method treats conjunctions generically.
They miss the protector-and-obstacle architecture in the Guṇa-Chakra. 9th-from-any-planet = Mars-protector; 4th-from-any-planet = Rāhu-obstacle; 6th = sins; 8th = punishment. Without the structural-positions, the protector-and-obstacle-readings for each graha are unavailable.

The Number-Graha method is lineage-fallback. Other practitioner-lineages may or may not use it. Larsen attributes it to "the tradition teaches" without specific source-citation. Whether this is Rath-lineage transmission or specifically-SJC-school is unclear.
The numerical-calculation in the H.C. Andersen example has an apparent-inconsistency: Mercury is given values 4 (Vāra-Chakra) and 5 (Guṇa-Chakra) at different points. The text uses 5 in the calculation. Whether this is a Larsen-typo or whether the calculation actually uses Guṇa-Chakra values not Vāra-Chakra values is operationally significant. The method may require careful re-derivation from a primary-source.
The method's effectiveness depends on the Number-Graha's chart-strength. A weak Number-Graha cannot deliver the activity any more than a weak lord-or-kāraka could. The method does not magic-into-existence what is absent; it identifies which-third-significator to check, which may also fail.
The Number-Graha fallback method is Larsen-distinctive within the held vault-sources. Foss does not use it. Kurczak/Fish do not use it. Pai's per-Nakṣatra method does not require it. DiCara's deity-mythology approach does not require it.
