The two frameworks make categorical vs spectrum claims about whether healthy-self-regard-with-narcissistic-features exists as a meaningful category.
Lieberman's categorical claim: Inflated ego (i.e., visible narcissistic presentation) is always evidence of underlying self-loathing. Self-esteem and ego are inversely related. Therefore: anyone displaying inflated ego is, by structural definition, someone with low underlying self-esteem masking it through defensive ego inflation. There is no category of high self-esteem person who looks narcissistic — the apparent high self-esteem is masking, not actual.
Greene/Kohut's spectrum claim: Narcissism exists on a graduated spectrum from healthy to pathological. The Healthy Narcissist has genuine self-regard, is calibrated to reality, and is genuinely interested in others without losing self. The Functional Narcissist deploys narcissistic confidence productively in domains requiring high self-belief (surgery, athletics, entrepreneurship). The Narcissistic Wound type is defensively narcissistic to protect a damaged self-image. The Complete Narcissist is the full pathological presentation. The first two categories — Healthy and Functional — are claims that some visible narcissistic features can co-exist with genuine self-regard.
The frameworks are not strictly incompatible — both can describe different layers of the same phenomenon — but they produce different diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Greene's spectrum framework would treat a Healthy Narcissist as someone in psychological health who happens to have narcissistic features. Lieberman's framework would treat the same person as someone whose visible narcissistic features are the audible signature of underlying self-loathing they are unaware of.
Resolution A — The frameworks describe different populations. Greene's framework, drawing on Kohut, may be calibrated to clinical populations that span the full spectrum from health to pathology. Lieberman's framework, drawing on the Holtzman LIWC research and contemporary clinical-psycholinguistic literature, may be calibrated tighter to clinical NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) where the inversion (inflation = self-loathing) holds reliably. Healthy Narcissist may exist as a category in Greene's framework while not appearing in Lieberman's because Lieberman's empirical anchors don't sample that range.
Resolution B — The frameworks describe different layers. Greene's framework operates at the behavioral-pattern layer (what a narcissist does); Lieberman's operates at the underlying-state layer (what is driving what the narcissist does). A person could display the behavioral patterns of Healthy or Functional Narcissism (Greene's classification) while being driven by the underlying-state mechanism Lieberman identifies (inflated ego deriving from self-loathing). The two framings describe the same person from different observational positions.
Resolution C — Greene's Healthy Narcissist category is a misclassification. Lieberman's framework would treat the Healthy Narcissist as either not actually narcissistic (someone with genuine high self-esteem who has been incorrectly classified by Greene) or successfully masking the underlying self-loathing (the apparent health is the most sophisticated defensive layer). Greene's framework would resist this resolution because it treats the Healthy Narcissist's genuine curiosity about others as the diagnostic marker that distinguishes the category from defensive presentations.
For Resolution A to hold: empirical sampling that catches the full Greene spectrum (including Healthy Narcissists) and tests whether the Lieberman markers (low first-person pronoun use, low tentative language, profanity correlation, cortisol elevation) replicate across the spectrum. If the markers replicate only in the Complete and Wound types but not in the Functional and Healthy types, Resolution A is supported.
For Resolution B to hold: research that distinguishes between behavioral-pattern classifications and underlying-state classifications and tests whether they cross-tabulate as predicted. The integration of behavioral observation with biomarker measurement (cortisol, alpha-amylase) would be the methodological pathway.
For Resolution C to hold: detailed clinical analysis of cases that Greene would classify as Healthy Narcissist, with attention to whether the genuine curiosity about others claim survives close examination. If Healthy Narcissists turn out to display the Lieberman linguistic markers under closer observation, Resolution C is supported.
