The escape worked. That is what makes the case worth having.
As a young man, Mao Tse-tung disliked his father and in the struggle against him found his own identity and a new set of values. But as he aged, his father's ways crept back in.1

⚠ The corpus should record the operational form: reversion is not a drift of temperament, it is the return of particular claims. Which ones you rejected is a list you can still make.
⚠ This is the finding, and Greene sets it up and does not draw it.
The father's preference was a peasant's opinion about how a household should spend its labour. ⚠ The son's version of the same preference was national policy applied to a generation.
⚠ So the thing that returned did not return at its original size. It returned scaled by everything the rebel had built in the meantime.

⚠ The corpus should hold both readings. The convergence is real either way; the mechanism is asserted. And the distinction matters for what a reader should do, because the two readings prescribe opposite things: watch yourself for ghosts, or notice that your father may have been right about one thing and you rejected it for the wrong reasons.
⚠ Greene never entertains the second. The chapter's premise is that the father's content is the enemy, so agreement with the father can only ever be contamination.
The instruction is unqualified.
*You must be eternally vigilant lest you become the father you had rebelled against… Remember: You are your own father. Do not let yourself spend years creating yourself only to let your guard down and allow the ghost of the past—father, habit, history—to sneak back in.1

⚠ These do not fit together. A process defined by being outside awareness cannot be caught by a resolution to be aware — and the whole point of the Mao case is that a highly intelligent, extremely self-conscious man did not notice for forty years.
⚠ What the remedy needs is an instrument, and Greene supplies none. Something outside the person that registers a state the person cannot assess from inside.

Louis XV — never rebelled, rotted. Mao — rebelled successfully, reverted, and did enormous damage with the reverted belief. Alexander — rebelled, did not revert, and the Interpretation calls him "an extremely uncommon type in history."
⚠ Two of three go the ordinary way. The chapter's instruction is derived from the third and its own stated general rule is the second.
⚠ And this page is where the imbalance is most visible, because Mao appears twice in Law 41 on opposite sides. He is the success story of the belittling strategy in the Keys' first paragraph — the man who used the suppressed resentment against Confucius — and the cautionary case eighty lines later. ⚠ Neither passage acknowledges the other.
⚠ The corpus should be careful to state what this does and does not establish. It does not show the advice is wrong. The equivalent is any external, indifferent record: a person who knew you before the rebellion and will say so, a written policy you cannot quietly amend, a decision log someone else keeps. The requirement is that it not depend on your noticing.
Watch the multiplier, not the trait. ⚠ The danger scales with what you have built. The traits that were harmless when you were twenty-five are the ones to audit hardest once you can enact them, because reversion arrives at the size of your current position, not the size it had in your father's house.
⚠ And leave room for your father being right. The chapter cannot accommodate this and it is the most likely case. Some of what you rejected, you rejected because of who was saying it. Distinguishing the belief came back from the belief was correct and you can now see it is the work — and the difference is whether you can state the evidence that changed your mind.
Strongest evidence. The case is specific — one named inherited proposition, rejected in youth, enacted in age — which makes it usable rather than proverbial. ⚠ And it is the chapter's only case of a successful differentiator failing later, which is the failure mode the rest of Law 41 cannot see.

The tea mill does not require the magistrate to be vigilant; it grinds louder whether he is or not. ⚠ Applied here, the requirement becomes specific and testable: the instrument must not depend on your noticing, and it must be legible to someone other than you. Remember: You are your own father.
What the pairing produces: ⚠ these are the two available theories and Law 41 only holds one. Greene's says the inheritance is an occupying force to be expelled and re-expelled forever. Roth's says it is the material you are made of, and the interesting question is not whether you escape but what shape the loop takes. ⚠ Mao's case is compatible with both and discriminates between them at one point: the forty years.
