Meditation Modelled on Fandom

You Are Already Doing It

Amirapu Natarajan wants to teach meditation on a chosen figure, and he does not start with posture, breath or scripture. He starts by telling the reader they are already an expert at it.

*"Imagine a person or God whom we like. If we go on remembering him again and again… then we can call it a meditation on that particular character."*1

Then the worked model, and it is a celebrity fixation. A favourite actor or player — remembered constantly, described to friends for hours, praised at every opportunity, his smallest achievement made the most praiseworthy, defended whenever anybody faults him. "Whatever he speaks is Veda for us."1

And the conclusion: ⭐⭐ "All this can be taken as a meditation on a particular character."1

The move is definitional, and it is doing more work than it looks. He is not saying fandom is like meditation. He is saying that the operation people already run on a footballer is the operation, and that the only variable left is the object.

The Four Behaviours, Named as Components

The passage is short and it specifies four distinct activities, which is what makes it usable rather than a metaphor.1

One — involuntary recurrence. Remembering him again and again. Not scheduled sitting; the thing simply comes back.

Two — elaboration in speech. Described to friends for hours. The object is rehearsed out loud, repeatedly, to other people.

Three — inflation of the trivial. His smallest achievement made the most praiseworthy.A distortion, and Natarajan names it as one without disapproving of it.

Four — defence under attack. Defended when faulted. The attachment is tested by opposition and strengthens under it.

⭐⭐ Between them these describe a well-attested attentional pattern, and the interesting thing is that none of them is what a meditation manual usually asks for. ⚑ There is no concentration instruction here at all. The practice is constituted by recurrence, speech, distortion and defence — four things that happen to an enthusiast rather than four things a practitioner does.

Analytical Case Study: The Consequence Is Stated as a Diagnosis

Then the sentence that turns an observation into an argument, and it is unusually blunt for a devotional book.

*"We start imitating that person in the way we walk, talk and dress. Our language and hairdo as well."*1

That is a claim about mechanism: sustained attention on a figure produces behavioural convergence with them, without anybody deciding to converge.

And then the diagnosis:

⭐⭐⭐ *"Actually, these characters in question are not so great as to attract so much of our attention. That is exactly the reason why even our personalities do not develop beyond a particular level."*1

⚑⚑ Read it carefully, because the causal claim is specific and is not the one a reader expects.

He does not say fandom is a waste of time. He does not say it is a distraction from real practice. He says the ceiling of the object becomes the ceiling of the person — the mechanism is working correctly, and it is delivering exactly what it was pointed at.

⭐⭐ Which reframes the whole passage. The problem is not that people are bad at meditation. It is that they are already extremely good at it and have aimed it at a footballer.

Why This Is Better Than the Usual Instruction

Set it against how this is normally taught and the advantage is structural rather than rhetorical.

A standard instruction says: hold the deity's form in mind and return when the mind wanders.Which asks a beginner to produce, on demand, a state they have no reference for — and gives them nothing to check against except the instruction itself.

Natarajan's asks them to identify a state they have already produced, at length, unprompted, with no discipline whatever. The reference case is in the reader's own experience, and it is vivid.

⭐⭐ And it supplies a diagnostic the standard version cannot. If you want to know whether the practice is working, do not check whether your concentration is improving. Check the four behaviours: does it recur unbidden, do you talk about it, do small things about it seem large, do you feel it when somebody dismisses it.

A person who says their meditation is going well and exhibits none of the four is describing an aspiration.A person who exhibits all four about a cricketer and none about their practice has an object problem, not a discipline problem.

The Cost of Building It This Way

Three real problems, and the first is serious enough to state before the workflow.

Inflation is written into the method. His smallest achievement made the most praiseworthy is component three, and Natarajan lists it without qualification.Transplanted onto a devotional object, that is precisely the mechanism by which hagiography replaces evidence — and this build has recorded the corpus doing exactly that across ten phases: claims inflated, provenance lost, small attestations made to carry large arguments.2

The technique and the corpus's characteristic defect are the same operation.

Defence-under-attack is the sectarian engine.Component four names, approvingly, the disposition that makes a devotee unable to hear a criticism of the object.Natarajan does not distinguish defending a figure from defending a claim about a figure, and the difference is where the whole build's epistemic discipline lives.

And imitation is unselective.Walk, talk, dress, language, hairdo. The mechanism copies whatever is available, not whatever is admirable — which is fine when the object is fictional or divine and considerably less fine when it is a person with faults, or a text with errors in it. Natarajan's own argument implies this and he does not draw it out.

What It Implies About Choosing the Object

The passage's real instruction is about selection, and it is only half-stated.

If the object's ceiling becomes yours, then choosing the object is the whole of the practice — and everything downstream is automatic.

Which explains why this book is shaped the way it is. Thirty chapters of one figure's decisions, each asked what he said and what he did, is not a devotional exercise — ⭐ it is the elaboration component being supplied to the reader at length, on an object selected for its ceiling.

And Natarajan's companion argument makes the selection criterion explicit: an ideal must have a form, because "most people failed to work with" an interface of words and numbers alone until icons arrived — **an ideal is defined as "the highest and greatest idea of something that can be set by a person in his/her own mind", varying by person and taste, and evolving as we evolve.**1

That last clause quietly concedes the whole difficulty. If the ideal evolves as we evolve, then the ceiling is not fixed by the objectand the book's central claim, that our personalities stop developing because our objects are small, needs the object to be ahead of us rather than chosen by us.Natarajan states both and does not reconcile them.

Where the Model Runs Out

Two limits worth naming, because the passage is short and it is easy to over-read.

It has no account of what sustains attention on an object that gives nothing back.A footballer supplies fresh material continuously — matches, interviews, controversies. The four behaviours are fed by a stream.A devotional object supplies a fixed corpus, and Natarajan never asks what happens to recurrence, elaboration and defence when the material is finite and already known. The tradition's own answer is elsewhere and is not connected: a boon of permanent insufficiency, so that the same story never satiates.3

And the diagnosis is unfalsifiable as stated. Our personalities do not develop beyond a particular level is offered without any measure of development at all — which is odd in a book that opens by proposing two arithmetic ratios for exactly that.4The instrument is in chapter one and this argument is in chapter eight, and the author does not run one on the other.

Implementation Workflow

Start by finding your own reference case, honestly.Name the thing you already do this to — a person, a team, a project, a grievance. ⚑ The four components make it identifiable: does it recur unbidden, do you elaborate it aloud, do small facts about it seem large, does contradiction sting. Most people's honest answer is not a person they admire.

Then treat object-selection as the whole decision. If convergence with the object is automatic, the deliberation belongs entirely at the front. The question is not how do I practise better but what would I be content to walk, talk and think like in five years.

Feed the elaboration component deliberately, since it is the one under your control.Recurrence, inflation and defence are largely involuntary; talking and writing about the object are not.Natarajan's own book is that component supplied at length — thirty worked cases — and it is the most copyable thing about his method: build the corpus you will elaborate from.

And install a check against component three, because the method has none.Inflation of the trivial is a named ingredient here. The build's discipline — cite the source, mark the confidence, keep the contradictions — is not decoration on this practice; it is the counterweight the practice structurally lacks.Run the two together or the method will do to your object what it does to a footballer.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Natarajan for the passage and the ideal-as-form argument,1 and four of this build's pages for the corpus's inflation problem, the satiety question, the measurement instrument and the archetype material.2345

Bounded.Natarajan cites nothing for any of this — no text, no psychological source, no authority. It is his own observation, offered as obvious. The build claims no prior source for it and makes no claim that the tradition holds it. [PLAUSIBLE — needs corroboration] [EXTRACTION — verify against print] [LOCATOR MISSING]

A second boundary, and it matters for how much weight the page can carry. The four-component reading is the build's, assembled from one paragraph. Natarajan lists the behaviours in a sentence and does not enumerate them, name them, or treat them as components. Recorded as a reading.

🔴 A tension internal to the book, and the author does not see it. Here the object's ceiling caps the person's development. ⚑ **Three chapters later the ideal is defined as "varying by person and taste" and "evolving as we evolve."1If the ideal evolves with the person, it cannot cap them; if it caps them, it cannot be set by their own taste. Both are asserted and neither is qualified.

🔴 A second, and it is the sharper one for this build. Component three is inflation of the trivial, listed as a normal part of the operation. The corpus's most persistent defect, recorded across ten phases, is exactly that — small attestations inflated to carry large claims, provenance lost in the process.2The technique this passage teaches and the failure the build keeps documenting are the same mechanism, and nobody in either corpus connects them.

Open question, and it is answerable by observation rather than by reading.Do the four behaviours survive a finite corpus?Fandom is fed by new material weekly; a devotional object is not. Whether recurrence and elaboration decay without fresh input, or whether re-reading substitutes adequately, is the load-bearing empirical question under the whole method — and the tradition's own answer, a boon of permanent insufficiency, is a theological device rather than a mechanism.3

Author Tensions & Convergences

Two practitioner corpora, both building meditation on a figure, and they disagree about where the difficulty is.

The extension corpus locates it in the procedure — a five-phase identity meditation, a pre-writing dīkṣā with three phase-states, breath counts, staged visualisation.5Its implicit model is that the practitioner cannot yet do the thing and must be walked through it.

Natarajan locates it in the object. The practitioner is already fluent; nothing needs to be taught; the whole problem is what they are fluent about.

And the two produce opposite failure modes. A procedural model produces practitioners who execute a sequence and feel nothing — which is the complaint that the corpus's own assessment material keeps circling. ⭐ An object model produces practitioners who feel a great deal and have no discipline at all, which is the failure Natarajan's own component three walks straight into.

⭐⭐ Neither corpus notices that the other has the missing half.A procedure supplies the counterweight to inflation; an honest reference case supplies the motive a procedure cannot generate. Between them the material for a workable method exists, and no document in either stratum contains both.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Memetic Engineering as Viral Transmission. That page records the modern corpus's model of how ideas spread — designed for transmission, optimised for reach. This passage describes the receiving end of that machinery from inside, and the pairing is unflattering to the corpus.Natarajan's four components are exactly what a well-engineered meme produces in a person: recurrence, elaboration in speech, inflation of the trivial, defence under criticism. What the pairing yields is that the corpus's transmission theory and this passage's meditation theory describe the same process from opposite sides — one is a manual for producing the state, the other a manual for entering it deliberately. And that is a genuine ethical fork the corpus never states. Component four — defending the object when it is faulted — is a devotional virtue when you chose the object and a captured audience when somebody engineered it for you.The only difference between the two is whether the selection was yours, which makes Natarajan's insistence that everything turns on object-choice a safety rail the memetic material badly needs and does not have.

Cialdini Inside the Devotional System. That page flags the corpus importing influence principles wholesale into devotional practice. This passage does something the corpus never does with an imported mechanism: it names the mechanism's cost in the same breath as its use. These characters are not so great as to attract so much of our attention. That is exactly the reason why even our personalities do not develop beyond a particular level. The pairing produces a standard the build can apply to every imported technique in either corpus — did the author state what the mechanism does when it is aimed badly?Natarajan does, in one sentence, about the very device he is recommending. The Cialdini document imports six principles and states no failure mode for any of them.Which is the difference between borrowing a tool and borrowing a tool with its warning label, and it is a cheaper repair than any of the corpus's safety frameworks: one sentence per technique, saying what it costs when pointed wrong.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The corpus spends enormous effort teaching people to meditate and this passage says they already can.If that is right, then every staged curriculum in the extension material is solving a problem its readers do not have, and ignoring the one they do — that the mechanism is running continuously, on objects nobody chose deliberately, and delivering convergence with them. **For a book of deliberate extension, this is a genuinely different entry point: not here is how to practise but here is what you are already practising, and here is what it is doing to you.

Generative questions.

  1. What is the smallest honest reference case? ⭐ Natarajan reaches for an actor or a player, and for many readers the true answer is a rival, a grievance, or a piece of unfinished work. The method works identically on those, and produces convergence identically. A version of this passage that admitted negative objects would be more useful and considerably more uncomfortable, and neither corpus attempts it.

  2. Can the four components be pointed at a practice rather than a figure? ⚠ Everything here presumes a character — walk, talk, dress. ⭐ Whether recurrence, elaboration, inflation and defence attach to a discipline as readily as to a person is an open question, and it decides whether this transfers outside devotional contexts at all.
