The Mongol Empire stopped expanding at specific places. Western Europe beyond Hungary. Southeast Asia beyond Vietnam. Japan beyond the Sea of Japan. India beyond the Indus River. Egypt beyond Ayn Jalut. These boundaries are usually explained politically (succession crises, dynastic fragmentation, military defeats). Weatherford provides a different explanation: the Mongol Empire stopped where its operational architecture stopped working.1

The expansion-limit had two interlocking components:

Component 1 — Grass-and-water for horses. With five horses per warrior, the Mongol army required substantial pasture and water along its operational route. The steppe biome extended across central Asia, through southern Russia and Ukraine, into Poland and Hungary. Where the pastures ended, the Mongols stopped. Their advantages of speed, mobility, and surprise were all lost when they had to pick their way through forests, rivers, and plowed fields with crops and ditches, hedges, and wooden fences. The soft furrows of peasant fields offered insecure foothold for the horses.

Component 2 — Bow-strength dependent on humidity. The place where fields began also marked the transition from the dry steppe to the humid climate of the coastal zones. The dampness caused Mongol composite bows to lose strength and accuracy. The bows were laminated horn, sinew, and wood — exquisite in dry steppe climate, degraded in humidity. The reason given in sources: the geography and climate stopped him. As soon as the Mongols left the dry mountain region, both warriors and horses weakened and grew sick. The Mongol bows weakened in the damp air and seemed to lose the powerful accuracy that made the Mongol warrior such a dreaded shot.2

  • 1280s — Vietnam-Indochina campaigns failure. Khubilai's campaigns into Vietnam and other Southeast Asian territories produced limited results. The tropical humidity and dense terrain degraded Mongol bow-and-cavalry effectiveness. The campaigns continued past the architecture's operational limits; they did not succeed at the scale Khubilai intended.

The fourth case (Japan 1274 and 1281) was a different architectural-limit failure — ocean-crossing requirements for which the Mongol architecture had not been designed. The Kamikaze typhoons that destroyed the Mongol fleets are usually cited as the proximate cause; the architectural reason is that the Mongols did not have naval-warfare doctrine adequate to ocean operations.

The major Khwarezmian cities have fallen. Khan considered conquering all of northern India, circling around south of the Himalayas, and heading north across the Sung territory of China. The plan would have produced operations across most of South Asia and into southern China. It would have been the largest single campaign in Mongol history. Khan was at the peak of his power; he had the army to attempt it. He turned back.

The reason: as soon as the Mongols left the dry and colder region of the mountains, both warriors and horses weakened and grew sick. Even more alarming, the Mongol bows that were so well adapted to the extreme cold and heat of the steppe homeland also weakened in the damp air and seemed to lose the powerful accuracy that made the Mongol warrior such a dreaded shot.
