April 11, 1241 — just two days later. Mohi, the plain in Hungary. King Bela IV's army has been pursuing the Mongols for several days. The Hungarians arrive at the Plain of Mohi where they form a densely packed camp fortified with a circle of wagons and heavy iron chains. They are cooped up in their own defensive camp for several days.
Both battles end the same way. Both armies are annihilated. Both kings escape (Henry II is killed at Liegnitz; King Bela flees south to the Adriatic). The chronicler Thomas of Spalato (archdeacon of what is now Split in Croatia) described the Mongols as de Peste Tartorum — the Tartar Plague. His description of the slaughter: "The dead fell to the right and to left; like leaves in winter, the slain bodies of these miserable men were strewn along the whole route; blood flowed like torrents of rain."
The case study reveals what defensive-architecture failure looked like at European-extension scale. The Hungarian commanders made operationally-rational decisions by contemporary European standards.
