The mother's presence at the birth itself is guaranteed — without her body, the birth couldn't have happened. But her presence afterward — the years of childhood, the steady availability, the not-leaving — that's a different question, and the chart reads it differently from the birth-event itself.1
Larsen names the diagnostic clean: to determine whether the mother actually stays in the native's life, look at the fourth lord from the Moon. To determine the father's presence, look at the ninth lord from the Sun. The Moon-as-mother-kāraka and Sun-as-father-kāraka anchor the calculation. Where their respective bhāva-lords land tells you whether the parent maintains presence or vanishes early.

The 4th-house-and-lord themselves indicate mother's health and quality-of-presence. The 4th lord's afflictions, its dispositor, and the 4th lord from Moon together can cause early demise of the mother. Malefics in the 6th or 12th houses affect mother's health. (For father, 10th house plays the analogous role.)
Timing-of-event: for grahas in or lording the 4th or 9th house, their Vimśottari Daśā brings the parent-related events. For grahas joined the lords of these houses, their natural age indicates the event timing. Moon's natural age is 23, so a Moon joined the 4th lord could activate mother-events at age 23. Sun's natural age 22 does the same for father-events at age 22.
Before predicting the nature of the parent-event, the Dvādaśāmsa (D-12) chart should be examined and timing confirmed from it.
The Moon is the mother-kāraka in classical Vedic astrology. The 4th house from any reference indicates the mother-energy and domestic-stability of that reference. So the 4th-from-Moon reads the mother's own domestic-stability — the mother's mother-quality, which determines whether the mother stays present in the native's life or fragments out of it.
The Sun is the father-kāraka. The 9th house from any reference indicates the father-energy and dharma-protection. The 9th-from-Sun reads the father's own father-quality — whether the father maintains the steady protective-presence the position demands.
The Bhāvat Bhāvam logic produces a self-referential check: not "where is the mother in the native's chart?" but "where is the mother-quality of the mother herself in the chart's parental-kāraka layer?" The deeper layer reads more reliably than the surface layer because it asks about the parent's own resource-state rather than the parent's outward appearance.

The reading: the native won't know her biological parents because the parental indicator (Mercury) is fundamentally weakened by Sun-combustion. The combustion is the parents themselves being absent — Mercury can't function clearly because the Sun overwhelms it.
Venus is the strongest benefic aspecting both the 9th-from-Sun and 4th-from-Moon. Venus codes the replacement parent — Venus quality, female-coded, gentleness, refinement. The native was adopted in early childhood and lives a pleasant life with her new family. Venus delivered exactly as the diagnostic predicted.
Lord Rāma faced exile because of his father's promise to his stepmother. The exiles happened due to exalted Sun in Ārūḍha Lagna.4 The Sun-in-AL configuration is one of the parental-abandonment indicators Larsen names. The exile did not occur at birth, so the D-12 Lagna was neither Leo nor Pisces — but the parental-abandonment-pattern fired at a later age, indicated by the Sun-in-AL combined with the curse-context (see Nine Curse Types for the curse-side of Rāma's exile).

You find the Moon in their chart. Suppose Moon is in the 7th house in Capricorn. The 4th from Moon is Aries. Lord of Aries is Mars. Mars sits in the 11th house, debilitated in Cancer.
The 4th lord from Moon (Mars) is debilitated and in the 11th (not a dusthāna but also not in a strong-supporting placement). Mars-debilitated codes weakness-of-domestic-foundation in the mother's own life. The mother's mother-quality is structurally weakened.
You scan for benefic-replacement. The strongest benefic aspecting the 4th-from-Moon (Aries)? Jupiter in the 5th house has graha drṣṭi on Aries. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer. The mother's role is being carried by a Jupiter-coded figure — a teacher, a religious-elder, an older mentor.
You tell the native: the chart shows that your mother's emotional/domestic foundation was weakened from her own side. She may be physically present in your life but the mother-function gets carried by a Jupiter-coded figure — possibly a teacher, a religious mentor, an older woman in your family who became your "real" mother. The mother-loss you feel is structural; it isn't your fault, and it isn't even her fault — it's an inherited weakness in her own 4th-house-from-Moon at the level of the chart.
The native confirms: their actual mother is loving but emotionally absent. The mother-figure in their life was their aunt, a religious teacher. The reading captures both halves of the experience.
You read the 4th house alone (mother's house) and skip the 4th-from-Moon. The 4th-house tells you about the native's direct mother-experience. The 4th-from-Moon tells you about the mother's own mother-quality. Two different layers.
You miss the combust-Mercury reading because Mercury looks well-placed in the Lagna. Combustion within 2° is a severe affliction that overrides placement.
You forget the D-12 confirmation. You predict father-absence based on rāśi alone. The D-12 might contradict it — or might confirm and specify the timing. Without the D-12 check, the timing-prediction is unreliable.
You confuse the natural-age timing with Vimśottari Daśā timing. A graha lording the 4th house gives mother-events in its Vimśottari Daśā. A graha joined the 4th lord gives events at its natural age. Mixing the two produces wrong predictions.
The 4L-from-Moon and 9L-from-Sun diagnostics are classical (BPHS-rooted). Larsen reproduces the operational rules from standard sources.
The D-12 Lagna sign-specifications (Leo/Pisces for father-lack, Cancer/Scorpio for mother-lack) are operationally interesting and somewhat lineage-specific. Different traditions emphasize different D-12 features.
Open question: empirical testing on adoption-charts and parent-loss-charts would clarify which indicators have highest predictive accuracy. The 4L-from-Moon vs Mātṛkāraka-Chara-Kāraka comparison would be useful.
Cross-lineage tension: Foss does not center parental-indicators in Yoga of the Planets. Pai uses them through nakṣatra-deity readings. Kurczak/Fish use them through Vimśottari-Daśā timing analysis.
All five vault lineages know the Bhāvat Bhāvam logic for parental indicators. Larsen's pedagogical emphasis on the dual-indicator (Naisargika + Bhāvat-Bhāvam) approach is operationally explicit. Foss prescribes graha-specific mantra-remedies when the parental indicators are weak. Pai layers nakṣatra-deity readings on top. The lineages converge on the diagnostics and diverge on the remediation-emphasis.

psychology: The Parent's Own Attachment as Predictor — modern attachment research (Main, Hesse, Fonagy) repeatedly demonstrates that the parent's own attachment-state predicts the child's attachment-outcome better than any environmental factor. A mother with secure-attachment-foundation produces securely-attached children even under difficult conditions. A mother with disorganized-attachment produces disorganized children even under privileged conditions. Larsen's 4L-from-Moon diagnostic encodes this same finding: read the mother's own mother-quality (4L-from-Moon) to predict the native's mother-experience. The cross-domain insight: Vedic chart-reading and modern attachment-research converge on the same architectural principle. The mother's resource-state is the binding variable.
history: Dynastic Mother-Loss as Civilizational Pattern — biographical history is full of cases where premature mother-loss shaped major leaders (Augustus, Napoleon, Lincoln, Lenin). The 4L-from-Moon framework provides a structural reading of which biographies would be at risk for this pattern. The cross-domain insight: historical-biographical analysis can use the Vedic framework as a prediction-tool for which leaders' formative wounds operate through mother-loss vs father-loss vs other-types. The chart and the biography read the same architectural fact.
The Sharpest Implication
If the 4L-from-Moon diagnostic is real, then most therapy that frames "your mother was absent" as a personal-narrative event is missing the structural-architecture-level fact. The mother's absence wasn't a personal failure or even necessarily a personal trait — it was an inherited weakness in her own 4L-from-Moon (her own mother-quality, derived from her mother). The pattern propagates generation-to-generation through a chart-readable structural mechanism. Naming this doesn't excuse the mother — it reveals the architecture. The therapeutic implication: working with the structural-pattern (acknowledging the inherited mother-weakness, building alternative mother-channels) is more effective than working against it (blaming or trying to extract more from the structurally-weakened mother).
