Parāśara opens BPHS with a stark instruction. Before judging any chart, judge whether the native will survive infancy. Until age 24 has passed, predict no longevity. Speak of an infant's lifespan only if the parents ask. To violate this is to incur the curse of Brahmā — Brahmā-doṣa — because you have introduced flaws into Brahmā's creation by predicting flaws into the chart's owner. The remedy is the Gāyatrī Mantra.1
Inside this constraint, Parāśara gives the full seven-tier longevity scale and identifies the three reference-points that determine which tier the chart sits at. Sun (the father, life-giver), Moon (the mother, sustainer), and Lagna (the self) — these three together form the basis of the Sudarśana Cakra, the wheel-of-three-charts that all longevity analysis runs through.2

Bālāriṣṭa (0–8) and Yogāriṣṭa (9–20) are the infant/youth mortality spans. Below 24, normal longevity-calculation methods (Piṇḍāyur, etc.) do not apply. The chart must first pass the bālāriṣṭa-clearance check before any further reading can proceed.
Three causes of bālāriṣṭa (per Parāśara's Mārakabhedādhyāya śloka 13): some die due to sins of father, some due to evils inherited from mother, some due to evil arising out of their own merits. These three causes map directly onto Sun (father), Moon (mother), Lagna (self) — the Sudarśana Cakra triad.

If all three are in exaltation/own/friendly sign, long life. Friendly sign = medium life. Inimical/debilitated = short life. Dusthāna or MKS placement = detrimental. Kendra/Trikoṇa = auspicious.
Antidotes (Parāśara's Negation of Evils chapter):
Sun = father (life-giver). Moon = mother (sustainer). Lagna = self (the karma that produced this body). The three encode the three causes of bālāriṣṭa (father-sin, mother-evil, self-merit-flaw). Hence reading them gives complete bālāriṣṭa-clearance assessment.
The 1st, 8th, 10th lords work mechanically: the 1st lord encodes the body's coherence, the 8th lord encodes longevity directly, the 10th lord encodes the karma-yoga that sustains the body's continuation. The 10th-as-third-from-the-8th encodes what is necessary for the 8th-house's function. Without karma-yoga, longevity loses its sustaining-mechanism.
The Sudarśana Cakra superimposes three charts: rāśi-from-Lagna, rāśi-from-Sun, rāśi-from-Moon. Reading all three together gives the complete longevity-assessment by checking each cause-of-bālāriṣṭa from its own reference-point. This is why Larsen says the three reference-points form the basis of the Sudarśana Cakra.

Every single longevity-indicator failed. The chart structurally predicted that bālāriṣṭa was unsalvageable. The infant lived less than one day.
The reading is brutal but precise. The Vedic framework names exactly which configurations produce non-survivability and exactly which configurations would have saved the infant (one benefic in a Kendra would have done it — just one). The case demonstrates Parāśara's instruction not to predict longevity below 24 — the consequence of a wrong-prediction would be devastating both for the parents and for the predictor's karma (Brahma-Doṣa).

But Venus is in the 8th house. The Parāśara rule: Venus in the 8th (or lording 8th when 8th unoccupied) saves the native through premature birth. The native was born prematurely (in or after the 7th month of pregnancy). The premature-birth was the chart's escape mechanism — bālāriṣṭa-cancellation through Venus's Mṛtyuñjaya-saving capacity. The native survived.
The case shows that bālāriṣṭa-readings are not absolute. The chart includes its own escape-routes, and Venus-in-8th is one of the most reliable. The premature-birth was, paradoxically, the life-saving event the bālāriṣṭa-configuration required.
A parent brings their newborn's chart. They want to know whether the child will live. You cannot answer directly because Brahma-Doṣa would apply. But you can read the bālāriṣṭa-clearance and respond appropriately.
You scan Sun-Moon-Lagna. Sun in 4th house (a Kendra, not in 8th or 12th). Good — Sun-source is clear. Moon in 4th (joined Sun) — not in 3rd, 6th, 8th, or 12th. Good — Moon-source is clear. Lagna lord (Saturn for Capricorn Lagna) in 9th house, exalted. Excellent — Lagna-source is clear.
You scan the three lords. Lagna lord Saturn exalted in 9th. 8th lord Sun (for Capricorn) in 4th-house (Kendra). 10th lord Venus in 1st-house (Kendra). All three lords in Kendras or trines or exaltation. Excellent longevity-configuration.
You scan antidotes. Jupiter in Lagna (Capricorn) — Jupiter debilitated here. Not the strong-Jupiter Parāśara wants. But Venus in Lagna and Mercury in 2nd both benefic-Kendra-class. Multiple antidotes present.
You report to the parents: "The chart's longevity-indicators are strong. The child has structural protection. The configuration includes specific antidotes that Parāśara identifies as evil-removing." You do NOT predict specific lifespan. You do NOT name a year. You report structural-clearance without making the prohibited prediction.
The parents understand. They go home reassured but with epistemic accuracy preserved.
You predict longevity for a child below 24. Brahma-Doṣa applies. Remedy: Gāyatrī Mantra recitation. But the karmic cost has already been incurred — the prediction itself flaws the creation.
You miss the Libra Lagna Sun-12th exception. Predict bālāriṣṭa from Sun-12th universally. Wrong for Libra Lagna where Sun-12th actually protects against bādhakeśa-disruption.
You read only Sun-Moon-Lagna and skip the three-lords check (1st, 8th, 10th). Miss key longevity-data.
You skip the antidote-check. Predict bālāriṣṭa from afflicted Sun-Moon-Lagna and miss that Jupiter-in-Kendra is present, which alone eliminates the evil per Parāśara's explicit śloka.
You read Venus-in-8th as bālāriṣṭa-confirming. It's the opposite — Venus in 8th codes Mṛtyuñjaya-class saving (premature birth instead of death).

If the bālāriṣṭa framework is real and the Brahma-Doṣa constraint is real, then every modern Vedic-astrology consultation about newborns is operating under ethical-spiritual constraints most practitioners ignore. The prohibition isn't superstitious — it's structurally protective for the practitioner-and-native both. The Gāyatrī Mantra remedy isn't symbolic — it's the chart-reader's escape-hatch from the karma of predicting flaw-into-creation. The implication for practice: any consultation about an infant should not attempt longevity-prediction. Instead, the practitioner reports structural clearance (or its absence) without naming a specific lifespan. This protects both parties.
