Every chapter of this book eventually has to answer the same objection: didn't some people just skip all this? Genuine prodigies, geniuses who seem to have emerged fully formed, with no grinding apprenticeship behind them?
Greene names the two examples people always bring up — Mozart and Einstein — and spends this short closing section taking both apart.1
Mozart started composing at five and performing before royalty as a child prodigy. That much is true and famous. What Greene points out is what usually gets left out: classical music critics generally agree he didn't produce an original, substantial piece of music until well after ten years of composing.2
He cites a study of roughly seventy great classical composers, and the finding is specific: with only three exceptions, every one of them needed at least ten years to produce their first genuinely great work. The three exceptions managed it in nine.3
Ten years, or nine at the very fastest, appears to be a hard floor — not a suggestion, a near-universal pattern across seventy separate careers.
Einstein began serious thought experiments at sixteen. His first revolutionary theory of relativity arrived ten years later, in 1905.
Greene can't quantify exactly how many hours of work filled that decade, but suggests it's easy to imagine three hours a day on the specific problem — which would total more than 10,000 hours across ten years.4 [CONTESTED]
Greene's conclusion is narrow and precise, worth stating exactly as he states it: what separates Mozart and Einstein from everyone else isn't a bypassed apprenticeship. It's the extreme youth at which they began, and the intensity with which they practiced, stemming from total immersion in the subject.5
He adds a general observation about why early starts compound: younger minds tend to learn faster, absorb more deeply, and retain a creative verve that tends to fade with age. The prodigy's advantage isn't a shortcut through the process — it's a head start on the same fixed-length process everyone else has to run.
Greene doesn't hedge his conclusion:
There are no shortcuts or ways to bypass the Apprenticeship Phase. It is the nature of the human brain to require such lengthy exposure to a field, which allows for complex skills to become deeply embedded and frees the mind up for real creative activity. The very desire to find shortcuts makes you eminently unsuited for any kind of mastery. There is no possible reversal to this process.6
The chapter's actual closing epigraph, from Hakuin, makes the same point as parable rather than assertion — a huge tree won't fall from one axe stroke, and a woodcutter who keeps stopping to ask why it hasn't fallen yet will never fell it at all.7
You encounter someone whose success looks instantaneous from outside — a viral first attempt, an overnight-seeming breakthrough. Before drawing any conclusion about shortcuts, find out how old they were when they actually started, and how many years of unseen work preceded the visible moment. Mozart's ten silent years and Einstein's ten quiet ones are the pattern to check for.
You're comparing your own timeline unfavorably to a young prodigy's public reputation. Recalculate using years-since-start rather than age. A twenty-year-old who started at ten and a forty-year-old who started at thirty are at the same point in the actual apprenticeship clock, even though one looks like a genius and the other doesn't yet.
You're tempted by a genuine shortcut — a technique, a course, a hack that promises to compress the timeline. Ask specifically what's being compressed. If the answer is years of exposure itself, Greene's argument (and the seventy-composer data point) says be skeptical regardless of how the shortcut is marketed.
The Einstein decade is well documented; the sixteen-to-twenty-six timeline for his path to relativity matches the historical record.
The seventy-composer study is cited with no source, author, or publication given — 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE, uncited, impossible to independently verify from the text alone. It's a real and often-cited type of finding in creativity research (composer output timelines have been studied), but Greene's specific numbers cannot be checked against his own text.

Greene's own closing claim — "there is no possible reversal to this process" — is stated as an absolute, immediately after two case studies that were selected precisely because they're the strongest available counterexamples. Debunking the two most famous supposed exceptions is strong rhetorical work, but it isn't the same as demonstrating the claim holds for every case; the argument's structure (defeat the best-known challengers, declare victory) leaves open whether some genuinely different case exists that these two don't represent.
This page's "no shortcuts, ever" conclusion sits at the harder end of a spectrum Greene occupies inconsistently across his own corpus. Find Your Way Back, earlier in this same book, treats Buckminster Fuller's abrupt, single-moment reorientation at Lake Michigan as a genuine turning point — not a ten-year process, a decision made in an evening that redirected an entire life. Greene doesn't flag the tension between a chapter insisting nothing can compress the timeline and an earlier chapter built around exactly that kind of sudden reorientation; the two claims describe different things (skill acquisition versus direction-finding) but sit close enough together that a careful reader notices the friction.
The Curse of Natural Talent — that page's central claim, that visible early ease actually impedes the development of concentration, and this page's claim, that even history's most famous prodigies needed a full decade regardless of talent, are the same underlying argument approached from opposite directions. The insight the pairing sharpens: prodigy status isn't evidence of a shortened process, it's evidence of an earlier start on the identical unshortened process — which means the entire cultural category of "child prodigy" may be describing timing rather than any qualitatively different route to mastery.
Gawande: Multi-Career as Protection From the Well Drying Up — that page's concern with sustaining creative output across a full career sits usefully against this page's decade-long runway requirement: if genuine mastery in any single domain requires roughly a decade of immersion before the first great output, a career strategy built around switching domains needs to reckon honestly with how many full decades a working life can actually accommodate, and what's sacrificed by starting the clock over.
Sharpest implication. If a fixed, roughly decade-long runway holds across composers, physicists, and — by extension — most serious domains, then the single highest-leverage career decision available to anyone is not talent, effort, or method, but when the clock starts. Everything Greene's other strategies address (finding your calling, valuing learning over money, submitting to observation) all function, in this light, as different methods for starting the decade sooner rather than later.
