Pull a plant out of the ground. Look at what was hidden under the surface — the tangled bunch of roots that anchored the visible plant. Now imagine pulling on a much bigger plant — one whose roots are tangled into the entire bedrock of the universe. Pull hard enough and you don't just uproot a plant; you uproot the foundations themselves. Mula — Sanskrit for root, origin, source, basis, centre — is the celestial position the ancients identified as this root-pulling territory. Pai works through 257 lines of Mula material, and the foundation-destruction-that-precedes-real-foundation is the operation. The constellation contains the centre of our Milky Way Galaxy itself — the literal gravitational anchor of the cosmos we live in. Pai writes: "The 9/11 tragedy occurred when Mars and Ketu were conjoined near the point of the galactic centre in the middle of this intense nakshatra."1
The shakti is Barhana Shakti — the power to ruin, destroy, break things apart. The deity is Nirriti — Goddess of Dissolution, Calamity, and Destruction, associated with Mahakali, also called Alakshmi ("the denial of Lakshmi"). The sub-deity is Prajapati (Lord of Progeny and Creation). The pairing is operationally precise: creation requires destruction of what came before — Mula is the celestial position where what is being created now requires that what was there before be uprooted first.
Pai's four-tuple for Mula: Barhana Shakti = the power to ruin / destroy / break apart. Basis Above = the breaking. Basis Below = the crushing. Result = destruction is complete, the soul is freed from binding-roots.2
This is the operational engine of uprooting that creates foundations. A chart-element in Mula behaves as a foundation-disruptor — what the native touches at the root level of their life will be destabilised in ways that ultimately produce deeper foundations. The native's life will repeatedly arrange extreme reversals; material fortunes seem to be stripped away, and the lesson of non-attachment leads to spiritual realization.
The primary symbol is the bunch of tied roots — Pai is precise about the tied — the roots are bound together in a bundle, not loose. Secondary symbols stack: the ankusha (elephant goad — gives direction to the largest land animal), and the lion's tail (the rear-end of the king-of-beasts, the part that follows behind the visible front).3
The tied-bunch-of-roots image is operationally significant: what restrains the Mula native is the karmic bundle they did not choose, and the Barhana-shakti works not by cutting individual roots but by destroying the entire bundle.
Faces adversity with composure. Skilled at persuading or manipulating people. Good politicians. Careful, clever. Able to live a comfortable life. Determined to succeed. Learned, good speaking skills. Spiritually inclined. Generous, jovial, successful. Determined. Fortune in foreign lands. Peace loving (paradoxically — the destroyer-nakshatra produces peace-lovers). Adventurous, brave, explorers. Just as the body part of Mula "the feet" can take the weight of the entire body, the native is able to shoulder many a responsibility in life. Strong sense of inquiry — the deepest sense of inquiry amongst all the nakshatras. The Mula native gets to the bottom or core of everything.4
Creates own insecurities. Lacks appreciation for others. Overly focused on goals. Not trustworthy, arrogant, self-destructive, stubborn. Sabotages own achievements. Many unsuccessful affairs / marriages. Low tolerance for boredom, indecisive, fickle. Lust and anger. Takes a lot, gives very little back. Severe addiction to smoking and intoxicants (alcohol, drugs). Cruelty, pain, sharpness. Adverse events for parents (especially father) after the native's birth. Extreme reversals of fortune involving pain and cruelty. Females with prominent Mula can show signs of anger and destruction suppressed, feeling they live a deprived life despite material comfort. Hip or leg problems. Ketu-drift causing lack of focus in careers. Ravana and Kamsa — two of the great titans of Indian mythology — are both associated with this asterism in Pai's compilation.5
Pai layers Mula through five classical-text mentions:6
The convergence is striking: Mula natives are medicine-makers, root-and-herb-dealers, healers, thieves, eloquent-but-dishonest, sacrificing. The classical sources cluster around the root-knowledge professions — those who deal with what is hidden underground.
Pai's planetary-conjunction reduction: Mula gives similar results of Ketu + Jupiter conjunction — the chart-element behaves as if the dissolution-planet and the wisdom-planet are fused. This is the liberation-through-destruction-of-attachment signature.7
The remedy stack:7
The Ganesha-form: Uddanda Ganapati ("Enforcer of Dharma" — 24th of Ganesha's 32 forms — very rare and angry form) at Guruvayoor Temple, Kerala. Depicted in red complexion with third eye and consort Shakti on left thigh; 10-12 hands holding broken tusk, Ratnakumbha (pot of gems), blue lily, sugar cane, mace, lotus, paddy, pomegranate, noose, conch water-vessel, garland.7
Ascendant: Jimi Hendrix, Sophia Loren, Priscilla Presley, Jim Jones. Sun: Brad Pitt, Jane Fonda, Uri Geller, Denzel Washington, Steven Spielberg. Moon: Ravana, Kamsa, Lord Hanuman, Dalai Lama, Sri Aurobindo, Arnold Schwarzenegger.8
This roster is the destroyer-and-foundation-builder roster of Pai's compilation, with one of the most extreme polarities. Ravana Moon-in-Mula and Kamsa Moon-in-Mula — the two great asura-king-antagonists of the Ramayana and Mahabharata respectively — both holding the same chart-position. Both rulers whose entire kingdoms were destroyed at the foundations. The pattern is Mula-king-falls-completely. Lord Hanuman Moon-in-Mula — operating the opposite polarity: the devotee whose foundational-attachment-to-Rama produces unbreakable strength; the destruction-of-ego-at-foundations-by-bhakti signature. Dalai Lama Moon-in-Mula — the spiritual leader whose Tibetan-foundations were literally destroyed by Chinese invasion, and who built a new foundation in exile; the textbook Mula-foundation-destroyed-rebuilt signature. Sri Aurobindo Moon-in-Mula — the integral-yoga teacher whose work involves uprooting Western-rational-foundations to install integral-spiritual ones. Jim Jones Ascendant-in-Mula — the cult leader of Jonestown, the textbook Mula-shadow case (addiction, manipulation, mass-destruction-of-followers). Jimi Hendrix Ascendant-in-Mula — the musician whose career literally destroyed the boundaries of guitar music and ended in drug-overdose at 27 (the foundation-destruction signature applied to his own body).
DiCara's treatment (27 Stars, 27 Gods lines 1926-1988) translates Mula as "Uprooting" — mūla = "root, bottom, foundation, origin, beginning, primary." Also refers to a "corpse" (body as root of ego and connection to a world in constant destruction). Mula's proclivity toward herbalism + medicines + drugs follows from the roots-connection.
Nirṛti etymology — "without-the-truth": nir- (without) + ṛta (true, luminous, proper, right, lawful) = "unlawful, improper, dark, false, evil." Nirṛti = goddess of destruction. Mula impels humanity toward lawlessness + untamed-spirit. Full standalone at Nirṛti.
Wife of Adharma + mother of Fear-Terror-Murder: Mahābhārata Adi.66.54 — Nirṛti married Adharma (Immorality); three sons Bhaya (Fear), Mahā-Bhaya (Terror), Antaka (Murder). The genealogy IS the cosmological-account of how destruction-without-the-redemptive-frame propagates.
Ritual iconography: Agni Purāṇa 51 — Nirṛti worshipped wielding-sword and riding-donkey. Devī Bhāgavata 8 — dwells in "Ink Black" city (Kṛṣṇāñjana); guardian of South-East direction (symbolic of pain + suffering). Has male/female form (Rudra + Rudrāṇī cross-link to Ardra chapter's Rudra-eleven-fold material).
The two-forms duality (Atharva Veda 5.7 explicit textual citation): Nirṛti depicted in two forms — one horrific-naked-ghoulish (oppressor-destroyer haunting dreams), other blonde-fair-golden-clad-wealthy (vast-as-space, auspicious). DiCara reading: "Mūla is fearsome and destroys us. But when we respect the function of destruction as a necessary stage prior to a new creation, we receive auspicious and beneficial energy from Mūla." The two-forms-duality is the deity-mythological compression of: practitioner's-stance-toward-destruction determines deity-manifestation.
Cross-chapter Rudra connection: Nirṛti's male/female form is structurally parallel to Rudra-Rudrāṇī (Ardra). The Howling-Destroyer-becomes-Auspicious arc applies via Nirṛti's Rudra-form: Mula provides impetuses-and-resources well-suited for spiritual-paths when destruction-is-respected-as-necessary-stage.
Etymology of Mula and destruction-tied-to-low-and-deep: when destruction takes place, things are flattened, razed to the ground, only roots remain. Corpses go underground or into water. Destruction (Nirṛti) is intimately tied to what-is-low-and-deep (Mūla).
Cross-star indexing: Mula sits within the destruction-territory shared with Ardra (Rudra). Both are spiritual-fertility stars when their destructive-energy is given spiritual-direction. The Rudra-Nirṛti pairing as cosmic-destructive-deity-pair makes Mula + Ardra a thematically-linked nakshatra-pair.
Agreement with Pai: both lineages frame Mula as destruction-foundation-spirituality star. Productive differentiation: DiCara's two-forms-duality framework (Atharva 5.7 explicit-textual-grounding) — the deity's manifestation depends on practitioner-stance; the Adharma-Nirṛti-Bhaya-Mahā-Bhaya-Antaka genealogical-architecture explicit; the structural parallel with Ardra-Rudra explicitly drawn.
Tension between Hanuman and Ravana sharing the same Mula Moon. This is one of the starkest polarities in Pai's roster. Both characters are central to the Ramayana — Hanuman as Rama's devoted servant, Ravana as the demon-king Rama destroys. Same chart-position, opposite ethical orientations. The Mula shakti is uprooting at the foundations — Hanuman uproots his own ego at the foundations through bhakti; Ravana refuses to uproot his ego and is uprooted by external force. The lineage's prescription is voluntary surrender of the bound-roots before the involuntary destruction arrives.
Tension with the "Ketu rules Mula" misreading. Pai repeats the correction. The Vimshottari-Ketu-association is dasha-timing — though Mula is unusually well-matched to Ketu's signification (dissolution, destruction, salvation through renunciation). The deity — Nirriti — rules. Propitiation is to Nirriti, Mahakali, Rudra, not directly to Ketu.
Pai converges with the broader Frawley-Sutton-Trivedi lineage that the Jyeshtha-as-Lakshmi's-elder-sister-Alakshmi-becomes-Mula-territory mythology is the central Mula narrative. When the gods churned the ocean of milk, the first thing produced was halahala (poison). From the poison came Jyeshtha — Lakshmi's elder sister — dark, ugly, with pendulous breasts and flabby belly. Sage Dussaha married her under Lakshmi's compassionate request, but she was lazy and constantly sad; wherever she went she brought misfortune. Dussaha abandoned her under a peepal tree. She cursed every house with poverty, grief, sorrow — became Alakshmi. Lakshmi placed her as Jyeshtha-nakshatra in the sky (opposite Rohini-Lakshmi-favourite-wife). The Mula shakti is structurally Alakshmi-energy — the imperfect, ugly, sad, deprived dimension that Vedic society wants to deny. Pai (citing Achala) notes: most of us have fallen so much into the trap of the illusion of a "perfect woman" served to us by mainstream media, that everything that is ugly, imperfect, fat and sad is something we are afraid of. The Mula native is inheriting Alakshmi's exile and must reconcile with the not-perfect dimension that the surface-world tries to deny.9
Pai also extends Mula with the Nirriti-Adharma-as-spouse mythology from the Mahabharata. Nirriti is the wife of Adharma (unrighteousness) and mother of Bhaya (fear), Maha-Bhaya (great fear), Mrityu (death). She emerges from Brahma's anus in the cosmogonic enumeration of his body-parts producing the various deities. The Agni Purana notes the spirit of the doer-of-bad-deeds leaves the body through the anus — Nirriti's emergence-point is the exit-route of the corrupted soul. This is operationally significant for the Mula native: they are constitutionally placed at the exit-point, and their work is the discrimination between voluntary-renunciation-through-yoga and involuntary-expulsion-through-corruption. Both end at the same Nirriti-Mula door; the practitioner chooses which side of the door they exit through.
Where Pai diverges from Kurczak/Fish is in giving the Galactic-Centre-as-Mula-location astronomical-observation this weight. The technical apparatus would name Mula's Ketu-dasha-association and the Tikshna classification. Pai treats Mula as the literal cosmological centre of our galaxy and frames the Mula-native's work as engaging with the gravitational-anchor of our entire universe. The 9/11 astronomical observation (Mars-Ketu conjunction at galactic centre coinciding with civilizational-trauma) is operationally testable as a hypothesis about the celestial-physical correspondence.
The connection here is that Mula is the lunar mansion of foundation-destruction-that-produces-deeper-foundation, the galactic-centre, the Alakshmi-energy that the surface-world denies, the uprooting that liberates. Three other domains have been describing the same territory.
Cross-domain → psychology. Mula's deepest psychological signature is the ego-death-through-foundational-loss mechanism. Contemporary research on spiritual-emergency, near-death experiences, ego-disintegration psychedelic states (Stan Grof's holotropic states; Roland Griffiths's Hopkins psilocybin research) names the operational mechanism: profound dissolution-of-self-structure produces either psychosis or breakthrough, depending on the holding container around it. Mula-placed agents are constitutionally placed at the ego-death threshold — their lives will repeatedly bring them to foundational-collapse experiences, and the developmental task is navigating the threshold consciously rather than being destroyed by it. Dalai Lama Moon-in-Mula is the diagnostic case at scale — exiled from Tibet at 23, watching his entire spiritual and political foundation destroyed, the practitioner who built new foundations through bhakti-discipline rather than collapsing into reactivity. The handshake produces an insight neither domain produces alone: contemporary research has been describing the operational mechanism without the celestial map; the Vedic system has been naming who inherits the ego-death threshold-position. Clinical implication: Mula-placed agents need intensive support during foundational-loss periods and do best with explicit ego-death framework (psychedelic-assisted therapy, intensive meditation retreat, religious-renunciation discipline) rather than ordinary-talk-therapy that treats the loss as pathological.
Cross-domain → behavioral-mechanics. Mula's Barhana-shakti-of-breaking-apart signature is the operational core of Disruption Strategy (Business and Politics). The contemporary literature on disruptive innovation (Clayton Christensen's The Innovator's Dilemma; political-disruption analyses) names the operational mechanism: certain agents uproot existing market or political foundations in ways that produce new orders rather than just damage. The variable is whether the disruption is constructive (Mula-Hanuman-style) or destructive (Mula-Ravana-style). Steven Spielberg Sun-in-Mula is the diagnostic case in entertainment — his career disrupted the foundations of Hollywood storytelling (Jaws invented the blockbuster, Schindler's List redefined Holocaust representation), but the disruption built new foundations rather than collapsing the field. Jim Jones Ascendant-in-Mula shows the shadow polarity — the disruption destroyed his community rather than building new foundations. The handshake produces an insight neither domain produces alone: the disruption-strategy literature treats disruption as a neutral business strategy; Pai's lineage treats it as a constitutional capacity with strong moral polarity. Mula-placed agents should be aware of their constitutional disruption-capacity and channel it toward foundation-building rather than foundation-collapse.
Cross-domain → creative practice. Mula's getting-to-the-root signature is the operational engine of the foundational-thinker — the writer or scientist whose work digs to the root-cause rather than addressing surface symptoms. Sri Aurobindo Moon-in-Mula is the diagnostic case in modern philosophy — The Life Divine, The Synthesis of Yoga, Savitri are all foundational re-excavations of what spiritual-and-physical evolution mean at root. First-Principles Thinking as Craft names the operational mechanism: the practitioner who can think from foundational axioms rather than from received tradition produces work that re-roots the field. The handshake produces an insight neither prose-craft source articulates: the creative discipline most contemporary writers fail to develop is the Mula discipline of foundational re-thinking. They either accept inherited foundations (the writer who works within an established tradition without questioning its premises) or destroy without rebuilding (the writer whose critique demolishes but does not construct). The Vedic system encodes the foundation-destroy-and-rebuild operation as a Mula-constitutional fit.
The sharpest implication. Pai's lineage locates Mula at the centre of our Milky Way Galaxy — the literal gravitational anchor of the cosmos we live in. Modern astronomy has confirmed that the centre of our galaxy contains a supermassive black hole (Sagittarius A*) — a region where gravitational force is so strong that even light cannot escape. The Vedic system identified this position as Mula-Nirriti-territory — the Goddess of Dissolution lives at the gravitational centre of the cosmos. The convergence is striking. The personal-life translation for the Mula native: they are operating under the celestial position where matter itself dissolves at the foundations. The work is engagement with foundational-dissolution — they cannot avoid the work because the cosmos itself enacts it at their natal position.
Generative questions.
