How Attention Actually Works in Sales

The book reaches across three different research traditions — Chip and Dan Heath's Made to Stick, Robert Cialdini's CSI articles, and George Loewenstein's curiosity-gap theory — to make a single point: attention isn't captured by enthusiasm or volume. It's captured by pattern-breaking. Operators trained to grab attention by being upbeat and energetic are using the wrong mechanism; the right mechanism is surprise and unresolved curiosity.1

What This Actually Is

The framework has three nested layers2:

Surprise snags attention. The Heath brothers' framing: "The most basic way to get someone's attention is this: Break a pattern." A prospect's brain is filtering out 99% of incoming stimuli to focus on what's expected. Anything that breaks the expected pattern — a question framed unusually, a statement that contradicts what the prospect anticipated, a moment of unexpected directness — captures attention before the prospect's filter can dismiss it.

Mystery keeps attention. Surprise alone is fleeting. The Heath brothers note that mysteries hold attention longer because the unresolved question creates a need for closure. Cialdini found that the scientific articles that best held his students' attention "read like an episode of CSI" — they opened with a question and unfolded like a police investigation. The mystery structure forces continued attention because the brain wants the resolution.

Curiosity sustains engagement. Loewenstein's curiosity-gap theory3 — the behavioral economist at Carnegie Mellon — frames curiosity as emerging "when we notice a gap in our knowledge. These gaps are like open wounds and cause pain, or they're like an itch that needs to be scratched." The curiosity-gap is the felt experience of incomplete information. Operators who create the gap and delay closing it sustain prospect engagement.

The operational rule: "open gaps first in presenting your ideas, then work to close them; the tendency is to give facts first." Most operators bury the lead — they explain the context and only reveal the interesting claim at the end. The curiosity-gap discipline inverts this: lead with the unresolved question, withhold the resolution, let the prospect's brain pull toward closure.

The News-Headline Mechanism

The book uses a worked example4: "BREAKING! There's a new drug sweeping the teenage community—and it may be in your own medicine cabinet! This story after these ads." The construction creates the gap (what drug? in my medicine cabinet?), delays the resolution (after these ads), and forces continued attention through ad breaks the viewer would otherwise tune out.

The same construction works in sales calls. "There's a pattern I keep seeing with operations directors at companies your size that almost no one realizes until it's too late..." opens a gap. The prospect's brain pulls toward closure. The operator can then ask the situation questions before resolving the gap — and the prospect's attention stays through the questions because the gap is still open.

Internal Logic

The mechanism is well-grounded cognitive science. The brain's default state is filtering for known patterns; pattern-break is the architectural signal that says "this needs attention." Once attention is captured, the unresolved gap activates the brain's pattern-completion drive, which keeps attention engaged until resolution. The combination of pattern-break + unresolved gap is the most efficient attention-capture-and-hold structure humans have access to.

Operators who use the mechanism well are not being manipulative — the gap is a real gap (they have a genuine insight to deliver). Operators who use it manipulatively create false gaps (the resolution is anticlimactic, the prospect feels cheated). The honest version produces engagement; the manipulative version produces churn.

Analytical Case Study — Cialdini's CSI Discovery

Robert Cialdini, the influence-and-persuasion authority, was teaching introductory social psychology. He noticed some of his lectures held attention better than others. He went looking for the variable. He found it in the scientific articles he used as source material — the articles that held student attention best opened with a question framed like a mystery and unfolded as an investigation. The articles that lost attention opened with the conclusion and worked backward.

Cialdini converted his lecturing style. He stopped opening with "today we'll cover X." He started opening with "there's an experiment from 1973 where researchers couldn't figure out why subjects kept doing Y..." His attendance and engagement metrics improved. The mechanism (curiosity gap → forced attention) transferred from one teaching context to another, and from teaching to sales when Cialdini's Influence incorporated the principle.

The case study is generative across professions. The CSI structure works in journalism, in screenwriting, in teaching, in sales presentations. The underlying mechanism is the same: humans process incomplete patterns as demands for resolution, and the demand keeps attention engaged.

Implementation Workflow

You audit your last five sales-call openings. Look for whether you opened with the conclusion or the question. Almost certainly the conclusion: "I'm calling about X" / "I wanted to show you Y" / "I think we can help with Z." Every one of those buries the lead.

You rewrite each opening to open the gap instead. "I'm calling because there's a pattern I keep seeing with companies your size that almost no one realizes — but before I explain, can I ask what you're seeing right now?" The opening creates the curiosity gap and immediately moves into a connecting question that the prospect now has motive to answer (they want to know what the pattern is). You don't resolve the gap until later in the conversation.

You try the rewritten opening on the next ten calls. The first few feel artificial because they don't match your trained cadence. By call five, the curiosity-gap structure feels natural and you notice that prospects are more engaged than they used to be.

The Curiosity-Gap Failure (Diagnostic Signs)

  • Burying the lead: opening with context and only revealing the interesting claim at the end; attention has already drifted by then
  • Creating fake gaps: the resolution is anticlimactic; prospect feels manipulated
  • Closing the gap too fast: revealing the resolution within seconds; the curiosity-engine doesn't have time to do its work
  • Multiple unresolved gaps: opening too many simultaneously without closing any; prospect's brain gives up trying to track them
  • Treating gap-opening as a tactic: deploying it without genuine insight to resolve; prospects learn to discount your opens

Evidence / Tensions / Open Questions

The cognitive-science foundation under curiosity-gap theory is well-established (Loewenstein's 1994 Psychological Bulletin paper has been widely cited). The Heath brothers' pattern-break framing is practitioner-oriented but consistent with the underlying research. The specific sales application has cognitive plausibility but limited controlled testing.

A live tension: the gap mechanism works less well with sophisticated buyers who have learned to recognize manufactured curiosity as a sales tactic. B2B technical buyers, journalists, and other professionals who handle information-flow as their daily work are partially immune. The book treats the mechanism as universal; in practice it works less well in those segments.

The continuous-attention frame produces different operator-behaviors than the captured-once frame.
