A Voicemail That Actually Gets Returned

Most operator-voicemails get deleted in the first three seconds. The book makes a specific structural claim: a voicemail constructed with two engineered features — the word "possibly" diffusing sales-pressure and an explicit operator-disqualification ("not sure if you're who I should be talking to") — gets returned at materially higher rates than the standard voicemail pitch.1

What This Actually Is

The book provides three template voicemails for different contexts2. The common architectural features:

Feature 1: "Just" at the open — "this is just Stefanie Smith..." — diminishes the operator's importance, signals the call isn't urgent or pushy.

Feature 2: Self-disqualification language — "I'm not quite sure if you're who I should be talking to..." — inverts the standard operator-assumption ("you're the right person, please call back"). Instead the operator signals uncertainty, which produces curiosity rather than pressure.

Feature 3: "Possibly" embedded throughout — "any possible hidden gaps" / "could possibly be costing you" / "possibly starting your own franchise." The word lowers the certainty of every claim in the voicemail, which fails to activate the schema.

Feature 4: Problem-not-pitch framing — the voicemail describes a problem the prospect's company might be having, not the operator's product. Curiosity-driver rather than feature-list.

Feature 5: Casual availability close — "I'll be available here for a little bit today" — implies the operator has other things going on. Not "please call me back urgently." Not "I'm waiting for your call all day."

The book also gives a specific franchise-lead voicemail template for inbound responses3:

"Hi Mary, you responded to our online ad two hours ago on one of our websites about possibly starting your own franchise. You would have seen our logo for XYZ Company on the site, and I was calling you back to see whether we could possibly help you. My phone number is 573-578-9872. I should be available here for a little bit today if you'd like to reach me. Talk then."

Notice the construction: specific reference (two hours ago, online ad), "possibly" deployed twice, casual availability close, no pitch content.

Internal Logic

Voicemail is a one-shot communication — the prospect hears it once, decides whether to return, and moves on. The architecture is engineered for one outcome: the return-call. Everything in the voicemail either contributes to that outcome or detracts from it.

The standard voicemail-pitch contributes nothing to the return-call. It tries to deliver value (pitch content) in 30 seconds, but the prospect doesn't have context to process the value, so the pitch lands as noise. The architecture's reversal: don't pitch; open a curiosity-gap with a specific reference and a low-pressure ending. The prospect's brain has to either resolve the gap or accept ambiguity; returning the call is the resolution path.

I called to see whether your company would be open to looking at any possible hidden gaps in your offline marketing that you might be doing or have done that could be causing you to overspend on your advertising each month. If that's a problem your company might be having, you can call me back at 573-578-9872. I'll be available here for a bit."

Mark pauses. The word "possibly" doesn't sound like a pitch. The "not quite sure if you're who I should be talking to" sounds humble. The mention of "possible hidden gaps" creates a curiosity-question: are there hidden gaps? He returns the call.

Same prospect, same product-category, same operator-time-investment. Different voicemail architecture. Opposite outcomes. The architecture did the work.

Implementation Workflow

Wednesday morning. Coffee at the desk. The day's voicemail-list shows fourteen prospects to leave messages for. Old you would have hit play-record-recite on each: "Hi this is your name from your company, calling about your product." The same script across all fourteen. Two return-calls if you're lucky.

New you opens a notebook. You write out the architectural template at the top: just / not-quite-sure / possible / available-for-a-bit. For the first prospect, you adapt the template to their specific situation — referencing what they responded to or what's specific about their company. You record the voicemail. It runs 22 seconds. The "possibly" comes out twice naturally. The casual close lands without urgency. You move to the next prospect.

  • Pitching in the voicemail: features-and-benefits don't fit in 30 seconds and trigger the schema instantly
  • Generic across prospects: same voicemail to every prospect signals it's a script

  • No "possibly" or equivalent softening: voicemail sounds like a sales pitch even without explicit pitch content
  • Too long: voicemails over 30 seconds lose attention; the architecture should land in 20-25
