Nārāyaṇa Daśā — Padakrama Daśā of Jaimini: The Three-Śakti Architecture

Where Nārāyaṇa Walks, The World Follows

Imagine Nārāyaṇa walking through your life. Every place his foot lands becomes the circumstance of that period — the job market that exists, the city you live in, the people available to meet, the weather of the years themselves. He doesn't ask whether you want the place; he just walks. Your job is to live there for the time he stays. Then he steps to the next sign, and a new world arrives around you, set by where he sits next.

That is Nārāyaṇa Daśā. A Rāśi Daśā — a sign-based timing system, not a planet-based one. Where graha-daśās (like Vimśottarī) tell you who walks into your life and when, Nārāyaṇa Daśā tells you what landscape Nārāyaṇa has set you down inside.1 The mind, the desire, the personal agenda — those are Vimśottarī's concern. The world that gets put in front of the mind — that is Nārāyaṇa.

Visti Larsen names this distinction sharply: "The mind however is subservient to the circumstances laid before it... Even if you want a job, you will not get one unless jobs are available. The desire is caused by the mind, but Nārāyaṇa provides the availability."2 Two daśās, two layers. You cannot read one without the other.

What This Actually Is

The Daśā is called Padakrama Daśā in some lineages — "the series of steps," or "the series of quarters." Pada is the quarter, and the steps Nārāyaṇa takes through the zodiac become quarters of your life. In the tradition of Śrī Acyuta Dāsa — which is the lineage Visti Larsen receives through Sanjay Rath — this Daśā is called Nārāyaṇa Daśā specifically because it encompasses the three types of śakti said to reside in Nārāyaṇa.3

The three śakti are:

Śakti Goddess Sign-Type
Śrī Śakti Mahā Lakṣmī Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn)
Bhū Śakti Mahā Sarasvati Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius)
Nīla Śakti Mahā Kāli Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces)

The architecture is theological before it is technical. Nārāyaṇa contains three goddess-energies. The zodiac contains three sign-types. The three sign-types are the three goddess-energies expressed as terrain. When Nārāyaṇa's foot lands on a movable sign, you are in Lakṣmī's quarter — wealth-pulse, motion, expansion. On a fixed sign, Sarasvati — accumulated wisdom, immobile depth. On a dual sign, Kāli — transition, dissolution, change-of-state. Read this way, the Daśā is not a calendar. It is a sequence of goddess-rooms you walk through.

This page does not teach the calculation itself — Larsen explicitly defers that to Sanjay Rath's Nārāyaṇa Daśā.4 What this page locks is the interpretive grammar: how the Daśā is read once it has been calculated.

The Mechanism: Treating the Daśā Rāśi as Lagna

Larsen's foundational interpretive move is simple and unfamiliar at the same time. Take the Daśā Rāśi as if it were the Lagna. Read planets from that sign as you would read planets from the birth-Lagna.5 The whole horoscope re-orients around the sign Nārāyaṇa now occupies.

Behind the Three-Śakti naming sits a parallel Trinity-governance Larsen leaves implicit and Rao makes explicit. The three sign-types are each governed by one face of the Hindu Trinity in their progression-mode: movable rāśis are governed by Brahmā (creation, where Nārāyaṇa starts new cycles), fixed rāśis are governed by Shiva (the "every 6th" progression-rule applies to fixed dasa-seeds because Shiva's destruction-rhythm cuts every sixth step), and dual rāśis are governed by Vishnu (sustenance, the dual-sign holds both motion and stability). The Three-Śakti theological-architecture (Lakṣmī/Sarasvati/Kāli = Bhū-essences) sits alongside this Trimūrti governance-architecture in the same daśā — Rao calculates the progression-rule from the Trinity-governance layer, the goddess-quarter quality is then experienced inside that progression.12 The technical-operational layer is Trimūrti-governed; the experiential-quality layer is Three-Śakti-coded. Both run simultaneously, neither reducible to the other.

The progression-rule contains two named exceptions that significantly alter the calculation: the Saturn exception and the Ketu exception. If Saturn occupies the dasa seed (the sign from which Nārāyaṇa Daśā begins), apply Saturn-exception progression rules instead of the normal sequence. If Ketu occupies the dasa seed, apply Ketu-exception rules. The exceptions exist because Saturn (the great-malefic) and Ketu (the moksa-graha) each re-route Nārāyaṇa's walking path in characteristic ways — Saturn stalls and reverses; Ketu cuts the path short. Three progression-cases per dasa seed (normal / Saturn-exception / Ketu-exception) must be checked before computing the full Daśā schedule. A practitioner who ignores the exceptions and runs the normal progression on a Saturn-seed or Ketu-seed chart produces off-schedule predictions with cascading error across the full 120-year-equivalent Nārāyaṇa-calendar. The exceptions are not edge-cases — Saturn or Ketu in dasa-seed occurs in roughly 16% of charts statistically (2/12 + node-conditional).

The principles transpose cleanly:

  • Benefics in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 12th from the Daśā Rāśi = auspicious.
  • Malefics in 3rd and 6th from the Daśā Rāśi = auspicious. Benefics in those houses are not.
  • Any planet in the 9th or 11th = auspicious.6

A quiet inversion runs underneath this. Benefics in the 8th from the Daśā Rāśi are auspicious — counter to most natal interpretations where 8H placement is feared. The Daśā-as-Lagna re-reads the 8th as the inner-wealth-vault the Daśā opens, and benefics there protect that vault. The same flip applies to malefics in 6H: from natal Lagna 6H-malefics often cause illness, but from Daśā Rāśi they sharpen the native's combat-edge for that period.

Within that frame, individual placements lock specific outcomes:

  • Malefics in the 4th — change of home, leaving the familiar.
  • Malefics in the 2nd or 8th — money strain, bad loans respectively.
  • Malefics in the 3rd or 6th — aggressive posture, success in battles (unless debilitated).
  • Saturn in the 7th from Daśā Rāśi — "few desires, will be lazy and will sleep late."7 The desire-engine itself dampens for that period.

The seventh from the Daśā Rāśi is read as the desire-direction for that period — what the native will want during the Daśā, not what natal 7H promised at birth. This is one of the deepest re-orientations Larsen teaches: desire itself is daśā-coloured. You are not the same wanting-self across periods.

The Three-Part Daśā Trend (Sign-Rising-Type Architecture)

Each Mahādaśā divides into three equal portions. Which portion delivers which kind of result depends on how the sign rises — its astronomical posture.

Sign-Rising-Type 1st Portion 2nd Portion 3rd Portion
Śīrṣodaya (rises with head) Sign-effects
Ubhayodaya (Pisces, rises both ways) Sign-effects
Pṛṣṭhodaya (rises with back) Sign-effects

The remaining two slots (lord-effects and occupants/aspects) fill the empty portions according to a deferral logic: malefic lords give their results later in the Daśā; benefic lords give them earlier. Occupants and aspects typically fill the middle.8

The mechanism is structural. A sign that "rises with its head" enters consciousness immediately — you feel the sign's quality first when Nārāyaṇa steps onto it. A sign that "rises with its back" announces itself slowly — the sign-quality arrives only after the lord's actions and the occupants' interventions have already played. Pisces, the dual-rising-both-ways sign, holds its quality in the middle as a balance point.

The Bush worked example (Pisces Mahādaśā 2000-2006) is the textbook case.9 Pisces is Ubhayodaya. The first portion (2000-2002) gave the lord's results — Jupiter in Māraṇa Kāraka Sthāna, forming Gaja-Kesarī with the Moon. The election court-case (Jupiter = judges) and the September 11 attacks fell here. The middle portion (2002-2004) gave the sign's results — Pisces as the 9th house, foreign travel, war on Iraq. The third portion (2004-2006) gave the occupants/aspects' results — Moon aspecting Pisces, fame, the 2004 election win. The three-part architecture predicted the order of the events, not just their presence.

Synergies & Handshakes Inside the Vault

This page is the upstream half of a triad. Read in sequence with Dvāra/Bāhya/Pāka/Bhoga 4 Reference Points (which deepens the within-Mahādaśā reading) and Vimśottarī 7 Positions (which complements with the mind-layer), the three together form Larsen's complete daśā stack.

It hands directly to Pañcāṅga Keystone Methodology — Nārāyaṇa Daśā operates downstream of the Pañcāṅga karma-filter. The Pañcāṅga determines what kind of karma is available to ripen at all; the Nārāyaṇa Daśā schedules when each parcel ripens.

It connects to Multi-Lagna 4-Tier Interpretive Sphere — the Daśā-Rāśi-as-Lagna technique adds a fifth interpretive vantage to the existing four, but only operationally for the period in question. The vantage moves as Nārāyaṇa walks.

It pulls against Jyotiṣa as Karma-Trigger Model — Nārāyaṇa Daśā is the paradigmatic karma-trigger device. The native doesn't generate the new circumstance; the circumstance arrives because Nārāyaṇa walked there.

Analytical Case Study: John Kerry's Leo Daśā 1996-2005

Kerry's Leo Nārāyaṇa Daśā ran 1996-2005.10 Leo is Śīrṣodaya — rises with its head — so sign-effects in the first portion, occupants/aspects in the middle, lord (Sun) in the third.

First portion, 1996-1999 — sign-effects. Leo houses Jupiter. Good name, reputation, fifth-house support of Mercury (communications). The early Senate years.

Middle portion, 1999-2002 — occupants/aspects. Jupiter conjoined other planets, fifth-and-second lord in the 10th from Lagna, joined Ārūḍha Lagna. Fame climbed. Venus's aspect from the 12th gave śubha yoga and an act of renunciation — Kerry stepped back from the 2000 Democratic primary because Al Gore was running. Ketu's Rāśi-dṛṣṭi on Leo from Capricorn made him courageous, lion-like — and through 9/11 he became one of the senators preparing the country for war. The Daśā's middle portion delivered exactly what the occupants/aspects coded.

Third portion, 2002-2005 — Sun, the Daśā lord. Sun in the Lagna joined Ghaṭika Lagna and Horā Lagna — rising to power. Sun is the 10th lord. The 2004 presidential run. From the Daśā Rāśi the Sun moved to the 4th — caution, change of residence. Kerry won the Democratic nomination but lost the general election (Sun in the 8th from Ghaṭika Lagna was operating against retention of power; his opponent Bush had Sun in the Lagna).

Three portions, three pre-coded result-streams, all delivered in sequence. The case is a precision-test for the sign-rising-type rule. Larsen's read predicts the temporal shape of Kerry's decade, not just its themes.

Implementation Workflow: A Tuesday Reading

A client sits across from you. Date of birth on the page. You have the chart open in two windows — Rāśi on the left, the Nārāyaṇa Daśā table on the right. The current Mahādaśā is highlighted: Capricorn, running 2024 through 2034 say. Ten years.

You don't start with planets. You start with the sign. Capricorn — Pṛṣṭhodaya, rises with its back. You make a note: sign-effects in the last third. The native is currently in 2026 — year two of the Daśā. The sign itself is not yet showing its hand. Whatever's happening to them now is the lord's work or the occupants' work, depending on which fills the front portion.

You look at Saturn (the lord). Saturn is benefic for this Lagna? Malefic? You check beneficence. Malefic lords give their results later, you remember. So Saturn likely runs in the middle third (2027-2030), and the occupants/aspects of Capricorn are what's running now. You look at Capricorn — Mars sits there, in the 4th from Lagna. Mars is what they're being put through right now. You ask about the home, about property, about a move.

The native says they bought a property in March and the family is at each other's throats over it. You nod. Mars in the 4th, Daśā-Rāśi-as-Lagna, you don't say. You ask about the property's location — north of the birthplace? They look surprised: yes. Mars in the 4th coded the move, and the direction was readable. The mid-Daśā portion hasn't even fully arrived yet — Saturn's results begin around 2027 and will reframe everything they think about home and family.

You write down the projection in your notebook: sign-effects 2030-2033, Pṛṣṭhodaya-tail. The sign Capricorn is the second house from Lagna — wealth and family-line. The final third of the Daśā will be where the wealth and lineage themes deliver. You tell the native what to prepare for: not yet, but in five years, expect the family-wealth question to surface as the dominant issue. They write that down too.

Read this way, the Daśā is not a prediction-machine. It is a calendar of incoming worlds, each pre-coded by the sign Nārāyaṇa now occupies. The job is to tell the native which world is arriving next, not whether they will succeed inside it.

The Nārāyaṇa Daśā Failure (Diagnostic Signs)

Read at the wrong level, Nārāyaṇa Daśā disappoints. The failure modes have signatures:

  • Reading sign-effects across the whole Daśā when they belong to one third. A Śīrṣodaya Daśā where you keep waiting for sign-effects to arrive in the middle. They already happened in the first third. You missed them.
  • Treating planetary placements from the natal Lagna instead of from the Daśā Rāśi. The Daśā is not visible from the natal Lagna. Mars in the 6th from natal Lagna may bless health. Mars in the 6th from the current Daśā Rāśi will sharpen the native into a fighter for those years.
  • Ignoring the seventh-from-Daśā-Rāśi desire-direction. The native says, "I don't know why I suddenly stopped wanting anything." You check the Daśā: Saturn sits in the seventh from the current sign. Of course. The desire-engine is shut down by Saturn's depressive seventh-house placement for this period only.
  • Mixing Nārāyaṇa Daśā with Vimśottarī as if they were redundant. Larsen is explicit that they handle different layers. Nārāyaṇa = circumstance, the world Nārāyaṇa lays out. Vimśottarī = mind, the desire that meets the world. Both required.
  • Forgetting the deferral rule for aspecting lords. Lord aspecting the Daśā Rāśi defers its effects to the lord's portion. The aspect doesn't mix into all three portions equally.

Evidence / Tensions / Open Questions

The interpretive framework is sourced from Sanjay Rath's Nārāyaṇa Daśā and from Maharṣi Jaimini through Acyuta Dāsa.11 Larsen positions this Daśā at the top of the Rāśi-Daśā hierarchy for circumstantial timing, but is explicit that it does not replace Vimśottarī for mind-and-desire timing.

The three-śakti theological framing (Śrī / Bhū / Nīla = movable / fixed / dual) is not operationally invoked in most Larsen reads — it sits as the naming-rationale for the Daśā but is rarely worked at the predictive layer. Whether the three-śakti distinction has predictive content beyond sign-type-rising-rule is an open question. A native in a movable-sign Daśā is supposedly under Śrī Śakti's influence; does Lakṣmī-worship intensify the period's auspicious results in a way Sarasvati-worship would not? The text does not commit.

The seventh-from-Daśā-Rāśi as desire-direction is one of the deepest claims and is under-exploited in most practitioner reads. It deserves its own future cross-domain handshake with depth-psychology desire-as-state-dependent literature.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Larsen on Nārāyaṇa Daśā runs alongside Sanjay Rath as both teacher and source, and that mostly suppresses the kind of disagreement an Author T&C section usually traffics in. The deeper interest is in how Larsen positions Nārāyaṇa Daśā relative to other lineages' keystone-daśās.

For Kurczak and Fish (Kriya Yoga lineage), Vimśottarī is the operational keystone — the technical center of gravity is the 120-year planetary cycle and its sub-periods. Nārāyaṇa Daśā either does not appear or is treated as an adjunct. The result is a daśā-stack that reads the native primarily as a mind-with-desires moving through life-stages. The circumstances appear as a backdrop that the native's karma-mind activates, not as a separate Nārāyaṇa-laid-out terrain.

For Larsen, the circumstance comes first. Nārāyaṇa walks; you live where he walks. Vimśottarī is the mind's response to the walking. The order matters because it reframes what astrological prediction is for — Larsen's framework asks the native to prepare for arriving circumstances; Kurczak-Fish asks the native to purify the mind that meets whatever circumstance comes. Both pictures cover the same year, but they ask the native to do different work inside that year.

The reveal: the lineage's choice of which daśā to put on top encodes the lineage's theory of where karma actually lives. Larsen, downstream of Acyuta Dāsa via Rath, treats karma as primarily circumstantial — written into the world that arrives. Kurczak-Fish treats karma as primarily mind-stuff — written into the desires-and-aversions that meet whatever world arrives. Both are theologically defensible. The difference produces operationally distinct practices.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

The Buddhist monk and the Stoic philosopher meet on the same ground when this Daśā is described to them. The monk says: yes, that is exactly the structure of dependent origination — the world arrives because conditions ripened. The Stoic says: we cannot control fortune; we can only control our response to it. And the modern systems theorist hears: this is a state-machine where state-transitions are exogenous and only the agent's policy is endogenous. Three vocabularies, one architecture. The Daśā handshakes outward in three directions.

  • Psychology: Affect as Context-Dependent State — modern affective-science work locates emotion not in the brain alone but in the body-in-environment system, with context as a load-bearing variable. Nārāyaṇa Daśā encodes the same structural truth: the native is not the same wanting-self across periods because the seventh-from-Daśā-Rāśi (desire-direction) shifts with each Daśā. The Saturn-in-7H-from-Daśā-Rāśi flatness is not depression-as-pathology; it is Daśā-coded reduced desire. The handshake produces an insight neither field generates alone: clinical depression diagnoses may sometimes be misreading a Saturn-coded period as a personality defect. The Daśā stops in eight years; the native is not broken. The two-system view (mind + circumstance) gives the clinician a corrective frame the DSM does not.

  • Behavioral-Mechanics: Timing and the Art of Strategic Patience — Robert Greene's 33 Strategies of War treats timing as a tactical resource: the strategist who knows when not to act outperforms the strategist who knows what to do. Nārāyaṇa Daśā provides a non-tactical version of the same insight — the native who knows which sign Nārāyaṇa currently occupies can refuse to act when the seventh-from-Daśā-Rāśi has Saturn and the desire-engine is shut down. Don't try to start a company in a Saturn-flattened desire-direction; the period itself is making you indifferent to outcomes. Wait two years. The handshake reveals the tactical use of cosmological knowledge — Daśā-aware action is a strategic advantage Greene's secular timing-frame approaches but does not reach.

  • History: Great-Man vs. Structural-Conditions Debate — historiography divides on whether outcomes are driven by extraordinary individuals or by the structural conditions they happen to inhabit. Nārāyaṇa Daśā votes structural without surrendering the individual. The native does work, has agency, makes choices — but inside a Nārāyaṇa-laid terrain that is exogenously given. The handshake produces a third position the debate rarely articulates: individual karma generates the terrain that future individuals must work inside. Kerry's Leo Daśā delivered a 2004 candidacy because Kerry's prior choices had built the conditions, but the 2004 timing was Nārāyaṇa's walking schedule, not Kerry's calendar choice. The structural and the individual are not opposed; they are linked across lifetimes through the karma-substrate.

The three handshakes converge on a single deep claim: the world that arrives is not random and is not chosen, but it can be read. Read it, and act inside what is given. Refuse to read it, and you spend your life pushing against a Daśā Nārāyaṇa has already chosen to put in front of you.

The Live Edge

The Sharpest Implication

If Nārāyaṇa Daśā is real — if the world that arrives in your fortieth year is a function of which sign Nārāyaṇa stepped onto when you turned thirty — then most life-coaching, self-improvement, and motivational discourse is solving the wrong half of the problem. You can purify your mind, sharpen your desires, optimize your habits all you like; the world that arrives is still the world Nārāyaṇa is walking. The corrective is not to abandon agency but to match it to the terrain. In a Saturn-7H-from-Daśā-Rāśi period, the mature move is not to push harder against your suddenly-absent desire-engine. The mature move is to sit. Wait. Read. The period ends.

Generative Questions

  • The three-śakti theological framing (Śrī / Bhū / Nīla = movable / fixed / dual) has not been operationally tested. Does worship of Mahā Lakṣmī during a movable-sign Mahādaśā produce stronger results than worship of Mahā Sarasvati would? If yes, the framing is predictive; if no, it is purely classificatory. What would a chart-paired test look like?

  • The seventh-from-Daśā-Rāśi as desire-direction is the most under-exploited reading-rule. How does the desire-direction interact with the natal seventh-house promise? Is there a chart where natal 7H promises a strong relationship-desire but Daśā-7H Saturn makes the native indifferent — and the native splits the difference by saying yes to relationship without wanting it?

  • If Larsen's prioritization (circumstance first, mind second) maps onto Acyuta Dāsa's lineage, and Kurczak-Fish's prioritization (mind first, circumstance second) maps onto Kriya Yoga's lineage — does the lineage itself select practitioners whose own charts confirm the prioritization? Are Larsen's students predominantly natives whose Nārāyaṇa Daśā delivers clearer signals than their Vimśottarī? Does the framework attract the chart it best reads?
