Among the twelve Ārūḍha-Padas in any chart, the Ārūḍha of the 8th house has a specific name: Mṛtyu-Pada — the death-pada, abbreviated A8. It is one of Jaimini's named sensitive-points, calculated as the Ārūḍha-projection of the 8th-house-sphere onto the chart.
Larsen uses A8 with surgical precision in John Forbes Nash Jr.'s chart: the Nārāyaṇa Daśā of Virgo housed the Mṛtyu-Pada, and this period of Nash's life delivered the schizophrenia-onset that became biographically central.1 The A8 didn't deliver Nash's literal death; it delivered the intellect-death — the schizophrenia that ended his mathematical productivity for decades.
A8 is calculated using the same Ārūḍha-arithmetic as A1 (the Ārūḍha Lagna): count from the 8th-house to its lord, then count the same distance from the lord. The result is the Ārūḍha-Pada of the 8th — A8 or Mṛtyu-Pada.
The diagnostic claims:2
The 8th house is sudden change, hidden cause, occult, death, transformations. The Ārūḍha of the 8th is what the world sees of the 8th-house functioning in your life — the 8th's external face. When the Daśā activates A8's housing-sign, the world experiences the native's 8th-house — which can mean sudden disease, accidents, hidden collapses, or premature death.
The framework specifies premature death — not the natural-life-end longevity-prediction but the off-timing-by-comparison death. This distinguishes A8 from the Bālāriṣṭa-Amita seven-tier longevity scale (which predicts the natural death-age) — A8 fires when unexpected death-events or death-equivalents occur.
This page connects to Bālāriṣṭa 7-Tier Longevity Scale — the longevity-prediction apparatus A8 complements with off-timing-death-indication.
It connects to Marāṇa Kāraka Sthāna — broader death-significator framework.
It connects to Nārāyaṇa Daśā Padakrama — the Daśā-system that activates A8.
John Forbes Nash Jr., born 13 June 1928, 7 AM, Bluefield, WV.3 Nobel Prize winner 1994 in Economics. Lagna lord well-placed in Lagna gave excellent intellectual capacity. Bhadra Mahāpuruṣa Yoga formed. But the Mercury-debilitation in Navāmsa ruined this yoga's full delivery.
Schizophrenia onset became biographically central after the birth of his second child (from his second affair). The Nārāyaṇa Daśā at this juncture was Virgo. Virgo houses the Mṛtyu-Pada. The Daśā of A8's housing-sign activated A8's death-significations — but not literal death. Intellect-death. The schizophrenia.
The next Daśā was Taurus, housing the afflicted 5th lord (intelligence). Indicating ruined intelligence. The two consecutive Daśās built the breakdown.
Larsen's interpretive rule, lifted directly: "To see the native's sense of awareness and direction during a Nārāyaṇa Daśā, treat the lord of the Daśā sign as Lagna, and see the placement of Jupiter there from. Here Jupiter is in the twelfth from Daśā lord, so the onset of a disease in the intellect is more prominent during such a time."4
The case demonstrates A8's broad death-spectrum: not necessarily mortality, but the death of a faculty central to the native's identity. Nash's mathematical mind was his identity-anchor; the schizophrenia killed it for decades. The A8 fired at the chart-coded period.
The native sits across from you. Forty-one. Doctor. Atlanta. Excellent reputation, strong income, married for fifteen years, two children. The chart on your screen looks robust — Lagna lord exalted in Lagna, Bhadra Mahāpuruṣa Yoga forming, fortune-houses well-occupied. The conventional reading is good chart, smooth life ahead.
You don't stop at the conventional reading. You compute A8 by hand. Distance from 8th-house to its lord, then same distance from lord. Where do you land? Virgo. Mercury sits in Virgo natally, but it is debilitated in Navāmsa. The Bhadra Mahāpuruṣa Yoga the surface-read promised is ruined by Mercury's Navāmsa-debility — exactly the Nash-Chart-48 pattern.
You check the upcoming Nārāyaṇa Daśā sequence. Virgo Daśā arrives at his age 52 and runs for ten years. The Daśā of his A8-housing-sign is approaching in eleven years. That is the chart-coded high-vulnerability window. You scan the planets aspecting Virgo: Mars (3rd-from-Virgo, hostile), Saturn (long-range aspect). The flavor reads as cognitive-or-faculty-collapse with Saturn-as-prolonged-disease layer. Not a sudden death; a slow intellect-disruption window.
You don't tell him you will go senile or develop a neurological disorder in your fifties. That would be irresponsible. You also don't pretend you didn't see what you saw.
You tell him: your chart shows a high-vulnerability window approximately eleven years from now, lasting about ten years. The flavor is cognitive-or-medical, not catastrophic-sudden. The lineage's recommendation in such cases is preparation, not avoidance. You give him specific actions: get baseline cognitive testing now (so future changes can be measured against baseline). Get cardiovascular and neurological screenings annually starting at age 45. Build the family-finances to absorb a possible reduced-earning-period in your fifties. Consider buying long-term-disability insurance now, before any pre-existing-condition disqualifies you. The chart's recommendation is operational, not fatalistic.
He writes everything down. He doesn't argue. He's a doctor; he understands diagnostic-screening logic. The Vedic-framework has given him a concrete timeline and a concrete set of preparation-actions that conventional medicine would not have flagged at his age. The chart-coded vulnerability is now operationally folded into his life-planning before the activating-period arrives. That is the A8 framework's pastoral-discipline.
A8's framework is classical-Jaimini-derived and carries through Sanjay Rath's lineage transmission. Larsen treats it as established.
A real open question: how does A8's Antaradaśā-resolution refine the Mahādaśā-level signal? Within a Virgo Mahādaśā, which specific Antaradaśās most-strongly activate A8's death-spectrum?
A second open question: A8's Vimśottarī-resolution — does the Vimśottarī Daśā of the planet ruling A8 also activate its significations, in addition to the Nārāyaṇa Daśā of A8's housing-sign?
Larsen on A8 carries the Acyuta-Dāsa / Sanjay-Rath transmission. The Ārūḍha-Pada apparatus is preserved unevenly across contemporary lineages; the Mṛtyu-Pada A8 specifically is well-developed in Larsen-Rath and less foregrounded in some others.
A trauma physician, a forensic pathologist, and a psychiatrist working with first-episode-psychosis all face the same question: what makes this person, at this point in their life-trajectory, vulnerable to this catastrophic event? Each has a partial vocabulary. The Vedic A8 diagnostic provides a cosmological-timing substrate.
Psychology: First-Episode Psychosis Vulnerability — clinical psychiatry tracks first-episode psychosis — the moment a young adult first crosses from prodromal-symptoms to full psychotic-break. The age-of-onset distribution has known peaks but is unpredictable for individuals. The A8 diagnostic offers individual-specific timing. Nash's schizophrenia-onset matched A8's chart-coded period precisely. The handshake produces an insight: first-episode-psychosis vulnerability may have a chart-readable timing-coordinate that secular psychiatry lacks.
Behavioral-Mechanics: Strategic Vulnerability Timing — strategists recognize that individuals are most vulnerable at specific points in their life-trajectory, and a competitor or adversary who knows these points can time their moves accordingly. The A8 apparatus is the Vedic-precision version: identifying the windows when the chart codes maximum vulnerability for catastrophic events. The handshake produces an insight: vulnerability-timing is a strategic resource that secular frameworks compute imprecisely; the chart-coded approach is sharper.
History: Great Figure Fall Pattern — historians of biography note that great figures often have predictable fall-events coinciding with specific life-stages (post-peak-fame, post-major-victory, post-major-loss). The A8 framework retrofits onto biographical record: where birth-data exists for historical figures, their Daśā-of-A8-housing-sign often matches their major fall-events. The handshake produces a historiographic insight: the great-figure-fall pattern may be partially chart-readable, and biographies of figures with reliable birth-data could be enriched with A8-analysis.
The three handshakes converge: the discipline of vulnerability-timing is cross-domain, and A8 is the Vedic-precision version of a discipline modern fields approach imprecisely.
The Sharpest Implication
If A8 is operational, then practitioners who do not flag the Daśā-of-A8-housing-sign as a high-vulnerability period are systematically failing to prepare clients for predictable catastrophic events. The framework is pastoral, not anxious — the practitioner helps the client strengthen in advance.
