Threes are everywhere and nobody quite explains why. Father, mother, child. Thesis, antithesis, synthesis. Action, reaction, equilibrium. Beginning, middle, end. It looks like a habit of the human mind, and most accounts leave it there.
This material makes a stronger claim, which is that three is what you get when two things meet and neither wins. And then it does something less familiar, which is to say the three does not stay three. So the question can be put in ordinary arithmetic. Why does everything come in threes, and then turn into fours?
The argument starts in physics rather than in scripture, and it starts with a stack. There is a whole hierarchy of forces holding the basic pieces of life together: molecule to molecule in liquids and solids, atom to atom in molecules, electrons to nuclei in atoms, and protons to other protons and neutrons in nuclei.1
The first three of those are accounted for the ordinary way. Electrons and protons are oppositely charged, so they attract one another, and that attraction is what the bonding consists of.1 Nothing mystical is claimed for any of it.
Then the generalisation, and it goes well past what the physics supports. The entire process is based on a Law of Three-acting-together-as-One, which appears to govern all manifestation, and all life-processes are based on three qualities acting together as one.1
Before the threes can be understood, the twos have to be. The Binary is the 1 + 1, the polarised qualities, and those are only solved when they are balanced into a third quality between the two opposite poles.2
Solved is the interesting word there. A pair of opposites is being treated as a problem in need of an answer rather than as a stable arrangement, and the answer is not one of the two winning. It is something in the middle that did not exist before either.
Which produces the arithmetic the page is named for. Instead of the logical 1 + 1 = 2, the binary 1 + 1 actually equals 3 — and three is a sacred number in many spiritual traditions.2 The two remain two; what has been added is the relation between them, counted as a thing.
The sign of the three is the Triangle, and the three separate corner points make up the Ternary.2 So far this is standard, and every esoteric tradition has some version of it. What comes next is not.
The next step is the one worth slowing down for. When the three corners act together as one, the arrangement reveals a fourth quality.2 Not a fourth corner — the triangle does not become a square. What is revealed is the whole thing considered as a single unit, which was not available while you were looking at three points.
Hence the strange calculation, stated in exactly those words: 1 + 1 = 3 = 4, or the Tetrad.2 Read the equals signs as becomes rather than as is the same size as and the line stops being nonsense.
The general rule comes with a requirement attached, and the requirement is for anything at all to happen. For something to manifest as an Event within Time-Space, there must first be a positive, active, dynamic element to start the process. Then a passive, receptive element receiving the flow from the first.3
A third principle then follows from the meeting of the active and the passive, combining them into the neutral, and a new unit results from the three acting together as one.3 Four terms in the sequence: an initiator, a receiver, the neutral thing their meeting produces, and the unit that all three amount to.
Two examples get given, and both are ordinary science rather than symbol. The Atom, made of the positive proton, the negative electron and the neutral neutron, which function together as a single thing. And the Embryonic Disk every human body derives from — the ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm, three cells acting together as the basic substance of our flesh.3
The same shape then gets read backwards into the Eternal No-Thing, and the identification is made outright. Ein Sof Or is this very process of three-acting-together-as-One, each of the three being part of the selfsameness of the Great Unmanifest.4
The three get assigned. Ein is the Infinitely Small, the Positive Seed. Sof, meaning Without End, is the Infinitely Big, the Negative Womb. These two are the divine opposites of the Infinite No-thing, and the balancing of them creates Or, Light or Energy, as a neutral force emanating everywhere at once.4
Then the fourth arrives exactly where the rule says it should. Ein Sof Or together create a fourth principle, which is the three-dimensional reality of Time-Space-Events — followed by As Above, so Below.4 The cosmos is not a fourth member of the trio. It is what the trio amounts to when taken as one thing.
Other traditions are then read as having found the same law. In Hinduism, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are the Generator, Operator and Destroyer — and that is offered as a fair definition of the word God, since those three words spell out the Ternary as an acrostic.5
Several other trios are listed as instances, drawn from mechanics, polarity, logic and the family. Action, reaction, equilibrium. Positive, negative, neutral. Thesis, antithesis, synthesis. Father, mother, child.5
Then Kabbalah's own version, and this is where the fourth acquires a name. The process is Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh, the Tetragrammaton or Four-Letter Name — and the point insisted on is that several claims have been made that the four letters refer to a process rather than an actual name.6
Each letter gets an element and a job, and the four together are the sequence set out earlier. Fire, water, air, earth, in that order. Read them as stages rather than as substances.
Yod is Fire, the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet, representing a flame — the Male Principle, the divine essence as male, active, positive, dynamic and creative Force. Heh is Water, the Female Principle, negative, receptive and formative Pattern. Vav is Air, and it is defined as the extension of Yod into Heh, a letter signifying fertility, the Principle of Activity as a neutral state reflecting the qualities of both.6
The final Heh is Earth, and it is the one that does something unexpected. It indicates the Form resulting from the previous three acting together as one — and it is itself Life as a Feminine Principle out of which more can evolve, with the right insemination and gestation.6
Which means the fourth is also a first. A new Tetrad, a whole fourfold process, can be born out of this last Heh by the same law of three-acting-together-as-One.6 The final letter is a womb, so the sequence does not terminate — it hands off.
You have a pair of opposites you have been trying to settle, and you want to know what to do with it. The rule here says the settling is the mistake.
Start by refusing to pick a side, because that is what the rule forbids. A binary is solved only when it is balanced into a third quality standing between the poles, and choosing one pole is not a solution but a deletion. The two stay two in every example given here — the proton does not defeat the electron.
Then look for the neutral rather than for the compromise. Vav is defined as the extension of Yod into Heh, which is a specific thing and not a midpoint. Ask what the active element does when it actually reaches the receptive one, because the answer to that is the third, and it will be an activity rather than a position.
Then check whether a fourth has appeared, since that is what tells you it has worked. The fourth is not another piece. It is the three of them being one thing, and it shows up as the whole arrangement acquiring a name — an atom, a body, a marriage, a piece of work.
And expect the fourth to be fertile rather than final. The final Heh is a womb, and a new fourfold process can be born out of it with the right insemination and gestation. So a solved binary is a starting point, and treating it as an arrival is the error the sequence is built to prevent.
The physics is accurate and the generalisation from it is not warranted by it. Bonding really is a matter of oppositely charged particles attracting, and the atom really does have three kinds of particle. Neither of those establishes that a Law of Threes governs all manifestation.
Whether the examples are instances or selections is the live question. The atom and the embryonic disk both work. So do a great many things that come in twos, fives or sevens, and no account is given of why those do not count against the law.
Tension left open. Positive Seed and Negative Womb assign the male to the infinitely small and the female to the infinitely big, which is at least an unusual arrangement. The Tetragrammaton reading then makes the same assignment in miniature, and nothing anywhere explains why smallness is active and vastness receptive.

Two readings of the Ein Sof Or sit in this body of work and they do not match. Earlier the three are stages in a story: an unknowable No-Thing, a contraction and expansion, a light. Here they are three simultaneous qualities in a single unit, with the light as the neutral term produced by the meeting of the other two.
The simultaneous reading pays for its neatness in narrative. If Ein and Sof are the two poles of one binary and Or is what balances them, then nothing preceded anything — the whole trio is one arrangement seen from three sides, and the drama drops out.
Which is probably the point rather than a slip. Each of the three being part of the selfsameness of the Great Unmanifest is a phrase built to prevent exactly the story-shaped reading. What is never done is the reconciling work. Both readings are set out plainly, and no line anywhere says how to hold them at once.

Einstein worked on general relativity, on and off, for ten years. One evening, past frustration and beyond trying, he gave up and went to bed early. He woke with the solution.
That is the same three-step arrangement described from inside a working life. Two things that will not reconcile, held against each other, and then a third that is neither of them and settles both. And the fourth arrives on schedule too — the theory, which is not a fourth idea but the whole thing considered as one, and which then turns out to be fertile in exactly the way the final Heh is.
But the creative account supplies the variable the cosmological one leaves out entirely, and it is the only variable that matters to a person. Time. The law here says a binary is solved when balanced into a third, and says nothing about how long that takes or what it costs. Ten years is the answer in the one worked case, and the ten years are spent holding two things that do not fit without letting either go.
Which converts a rule about the cosmos into an instruction somebody can follow. The third is not produced by the two being present. It is produced by their being held unresolved, for a long time, by someone who could have collapsed the tension at any point and did not. Every premature resolution is a binary settled by deletion, and the arrangement it leaves behind will look tidy and generate no fourth thing at all.
Sharpest implication. The final Heh is both the outcome and a womb, so a completed fourfold process is the starting material for the next one. Nothing in this system finishes — it only becomes the ground for something that has not happened yet.
