You've felt it. You're in a coffee shop, head down over your phone, and something makes you look up — and there, across the room, someone is staring right at you, and they glance away the second your eyes land on them. Or a friend tries to creep up behind you and you turn around before they touch you, before they make a sound. Most people file the first one under "paranoia" and the second under "luck."1 Haha Lung's claim in Knights of Darkness is that both are real, both are trainable, and the people who survive in the dark have trained them on purpose. He calls the underlying faculty peripheral body sense — the felt awareness of a presence at a distance, three to five feet out and well beyond — and he says you can sharpen it until you can tell when someone is watching you across a room.2
Peripheral body sense is the trained ability to detect another person's presence — and their attention — outside the range of your conscious five senses. Lung describes it as a feeling, not a thought: someone's "field" comes into contact with your own, and you feel it, whether or not you choose to acknowledge it.2 The faculty is innate. Nature equipped us with it for survival; nurture — what Lung calls "society" — has done its best to dull it and breed the instinct out of us, which is why the average person dismisses the watched-feeling as nerves.1
What makes this a behavioral-mechanics page and not a parapsychology one is the second half of Lung's claim. The "sixth sense" the nightfighter is famous for is not an extra channel. It is the disciplined integration of the verified five, pushed past the point where ordinary people stop paying attention.3 "Someone once estimated that human beings only use 10 percent of their abilities," Lung writes. "More correctly, we use our abilities to only 10 percent efficiency."4 Peripheral body sense is what you get when you run the existing instrument at higher efficiency — and the "sixth sense" is the name outsiders give to the result.
Lung offers competing mechanisms for what you are actually picking up, and to his credit he does not pretend to know which is true. He lays the options on the table and tells you it's moot.
The first is mundane and well-supported: you are catching subliminal smells and below-audible sounds. Your brain records everything that passes before your eyes and every odor in the room, but floods you with so much input that it only surfaces what interests you or threatens you — the rest gets filed below the floor of attention.5 So the "feeling" of a presence may simply be a pheromone-edge or a sub-audible footfall that registered subconsciously and bypassed your conscious report.6 [PLAUSIBLE — needs corroboration]
The second is the one that makes the page interesting and the one to handle with tongs. Lung cites Caltech researchers who found crystals of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) in the brains of birds and fish, where the mineral acts as a biological compass for migration and spawning. The same mineral, he says, has been found in humans and "is believed to account for the electromagnetic (EM) field that extends out from and surrounds the body."7 When another person's EM field touches yours, on this account, you feel it directly. [CONTESTED] The magnetite-as-human-compass leap is the load-bearing weak link: magnetite in human tissue is real, but the claim that it generates a body-surrounding EM field you can sense another person inside of is not established science, and Lung presents it as "believed to," not demonstrated.
Notice the structure of his own argument. The bird-compass is a genuine biological-compass analogy doing rhetorical work — it makes the EM claim sound grounded by borrowing the credibility of a real phenomenon in a different species for a different function. That is worth flagging, because it is exactly the move a careful reader should catch.
What this page gives the rest of the vault is the distance dimension of the Lung sensory corpus. The vault already holds close-range reading — micro-tells caught across a table — and the influence-posture built on top of it. Peripheral body sense is the same training pushed outward, past contact range, to the perimeter. It supplies the vault's account of the watcher-feeling: the thing the operative exploits when he wants a target to feel watched, and the thing he must master so he is never the one caught looking.
It also supplies the vault's clearest statement of the sixth-sense-as-integration thesis: that the famous "sixth sense" of the nightfighter is not magic but the five verified senses used fully and in concert. That thesis is the connective tissue between the perceptual pages (what you can detect) and the influence pages (what the target believes you can detect). The gap between those two — real competence, supernatural-seeming result — is the asset the whole corpus monetizes.
The single most concrete thing in Lung's treatment is the concentration drill, and it repays a close reading because it shows you exactly what "training a sense" means in his hands.
You relax, close your eyes, and listen for the sound that is farthest away.8 At first it's small and near — someone shifting in the next room, birds on the window ledge, cars on the street. The drill is not to identify those sounds. The drill is the next instruction: "will your hearing outward, beyond the farthest sound you hear."8 You are not straining to hear better; you are projecting the boundary of your attention past its current edge. Practice "hearing," Lung says, with your entire body.8
The payoff he promises is that, before long, you start catching things that were always there and always missed — the thunderstorm still rumbling in over the horizon, the jet high in the clouds.8 The faculty was never absent. The filter was simply set to drop them. The drill resets the filter.
Lung anchors the logic with a martial-arts analogy that is genuinely clarifying. Martial artists throw practice kicks to head level not because they expect to kick someone in the head, but because a fighter who can drive a powerful kick to head height can deliver power to any target below it.8 You train past the operational range so the operational range becomes easy. Will your hearing out to the most distant sound, and your immediate surroundings — the three-to-five-foot bubble where presence actually matters — become loud and obvious by comparison.8 He invokes Musashi as the patron of this discipline: "pay attention even to trifles," which Lung reads as a demand for exactly this kind of trained, effortful focus on small details.9 [POPULAR SOURCE]
The case study earns its place because it strips the mysticism off the practice. The drill is just attention-expansion. Whatever the true mechanism — pheromones, sub-audible sound, or the contested EM field — the training is the same boring, repeatable thing: relax, project the attentional boundary outward, do it daily.
It is late and the room is finally quiet. You sit, let the breath go long, and let your eyes close. For a moment the silence is just silence — and then it isn't. The refrigerator's hum surfaces first, then a board settling somewhere in the house, then a car two streets over rolling through wet asphalt. You don't chase any of them. You let the farthest one — that car — sit at the edge of what you can hear.
Now you do the strange thing. You push the edge. Not by straining the ears, but by deciding the boundary of your listening is further out than the car. You feel the attention spread past the walls, past the street, the way warmth spreads through your hands when you finally stop gripping. And something arrives that wasn't there a second ago: a low, almost-not-there rumble on the far horizon, weather you had no idea was coming. A high thin line of sound — a jet, miles up. You weren't deaf to these. You were filtering them out, and you just turned the filter down.
You hold it there, listening with the whole skin of you, not just the ears. The near room goes vivid in the bargain — you'd know now if someone shifted their weight in the doorway behind you, because the doorway is well inside the radius you've thrown your attention across. That is the whole point. Train the perimeter and the close-in bubble takes care of itself. You let the edge come back in slowly, open your eyes, and the quiet is no longer empty. It is a field you can read.
You can tell when peripheral body sense has gone slack, and the signs are not subtle once you know them.
The first is the startle. Someone reaches your shoulder before you register them; a person enters the room and you jump when they speak. A blunted perimeter means the bubble has collapsed to skin-contact range — you only know someone is there when they touch you or break the silence, which in the night is far too late.2
The second is the rationalizing reflex: the felt signal arrives and you immediately talk yourself out of it. You sense the watcher and call it paranoia; you turn early and call it luck.1 Lung's diagnosis is that the faculty is firing fine — society just trained you to override its report. The failure is not in the sensor; it's in the dismissal.
The third is the strain tell. If your version of the concentration drill feels like effort — clenching, leaning toward the sound — you are doing the opposite of the practice. The drill is relaxation plus projection, not muscular forcing. A practitioner who strains is grinding the gears and will quit in a week.8
The honest tension lives inside Lung's own text. On mechanism he is split and he says so: the watched-feeling may be subliminal smell, may be sub-audible sound, may be the EM field — and "whichever explanation sounds the most plausible (perhaps it is a combination of both) is also moot. For us, in the end, all that matters is survival and the success of our mission."6 That is a practitioner's epistemics: the training works whether or not the theory holds, so the theory is optional.
For the vault, the theory is not optional, because filing demands we mark what is supported and what isn't. The subliminal-perception leg is plausible and broadly consistent with how attentional filtering works.5 The EM-field leg, leaning on human magnetite, is contested and presented by Lung himself only as "believed to."7 The two legs should not be granted equal weight just because Lung treats their difference as moot.
There is also Lung's final, telling retreat. Pressed on whether ESP is real, he hedges all the way to: even if it isn't, mastering the five senses fully will "make your enemies believe that you do possess a sixth sense and are, therefore, the most dangerous foe."10 The capability claim has quietly become a reputation claim. The open question is whether peripheral body sense is a perception you train or a fear you cultivate in others — and Lung, characteristically, wants it both ways.
This is a single-source page, so the tension to surface is Lung's own — and it is sharp enough to carry the section. Lung wants peripheral body sense to be a real faculty and a useful legend at the same time, and he never resolves which one he's selling. In the concentration chapter he treats it as a trainable perceptual skill with a biological basis, complete with a drill and a Caltech citation.27 Twenty pages later, cornered on whether any of it is extrasensory, he falls back to the position that the appearance of a sixth sense is what actually matters — that an enemy who believes you have one is already half-beaten.10 The convergence is that both framings serve the same master: survival and mission success, the only court Lung accepts. The tension is that a reader who wants to know whether the thing is true gets told, in effect, that the question is beneath an operative. That is consistent with how Lung handles every spooky-sounding capability in the corpus — keep the competence real, keep the explanation cheap, and let the target supply the magic.

ASP — Additional Sensory Perception. The tightest pairing in the vault is ASP — The Man Who Only Seemed To Read Minds. The relationship is part-to-whole, and getting it right matters. ASP is the influence posture: the target believes you reached into his skull, and the gap between what you actually did (smelled it, saw it, felt it) and what he thinks you did is the entire asset. Peripheral body sense is one of the perceptual primitives that posture is built on — specifically the distance one, the felt detection of a presence outside contact range. ASP is what the audience sees; peripheral body sense is part of the engine under the hood. The insight that neither page produces alone: ASP centers on reading the person in front of you (the flinch, the warm palm), but peripheral body sense covers the person you haven't turned to look at yet — which means the "mind-reading" effect can be triggered before eye contact, by sensing the watcher behind you and turning at the exact moment they expected to go unseen. That timing trick, the turn that lands precisely when they thought they were invisible, is pure peripheral-body-sense and it sells the ASP legend harder than any across-the-table tell.
Jing Gong sensory training. The contrast with Jing Gong Sensory Training is a contrast of range. Jing Gong is the close-quarters reading instrument — micro-facial expressions lasting half a second, breathing-pattern shifts, the leak of a suppressed emotion across a table. It reads a person you are engaged with. Peripheral body sense reads a person you are not yet engaged with — someone at the perimeter, possibly behind you, whose only emission is the prickle of their attention. Put them on a timeline and they're the same operative skill at two distances: peripheral body sense detects the approach, hands off to Jing Gong the moment the target is within tell-reading range. The insight neither generates alone: an operative trained only in Jing Gong is blind until contact and gets startled; an operative trained only in peripheral sense knows someone is there but can't yet read what they want. The dangerous one runs both — perimeter awareness feeding close-range calibration in a continuous loop from forty feet to two.
The sixth sense as an attack surface. Run the concept through Eight Minds, Eight Consciousnesses as Attack Surface and it flips polarity. That page treats the "sixth sense" not as a faculty you build but as a layer of the mind an attacker can target. Stack the two and you get the full picture: peripheral body sense is how you read the room; the eight-minds frame is how someone reads — and games — your reading of the room. If a target's perimeter awareness is sharp, you don't fight it; you feed it false presence (a planted watcher, a staged sound at the edge of audibility) so their trained instinct delivers them a conclusion you authored. The insight neither produces alone: the same trained faculty that protects an operative becomes the cleanest channel to deceive him, precisely because he trusts it as instinct and won't second-guess it the way he'd second-guess a spoken claim. Sharpen a sense and you also sharpen the wound.
The Sharpest Implication. Lung's quiet retreat — from "you can train this faculty" to "your enemy will believe you have it" — is not a weakness in the doctrine; it's the doctrine's real teeth. Peripheral body sense pays off twice: once as genuine perimeter awareness that keeps you alive, and once as a reputation that does your fighting before you arrive. The training is real and the legend is free, and a sufficiently advanced operative stops caring which one is doing the work.
