Picture someone in his early twenties — kind, hardworking, punctual, well-liked. Then, without warning, he starts swearing at strangers, urinating in public, picking fights everywhere he goes. No head trauma in the story yet, no accident, nothing. Just a total personality collapse, seemingly out of nowhere. Now add the accident: a three-and-a-half-foot iron rod, driven by an explosion, goes straight through his skull. That's Phineas Gage, 1848, and the man who survived the rod was — by every account from people who knew him — not the same man who'd been standing there a moment before.1

Gage's case became one of neuroscience's founding data points precisely because of what it revealed by accident: for most of history, the only way to learn what a piece of the brain actually did was to find someone who'd lost that piece and watch what changed. These are called loss-of-function studies, and Gage is their most famous early instance — a natural experiment nobody would have run on purpose, teaching an entire field things intention alone couldn't have found.1
