If any human activity were going to be free of attachment to the familiar, it ought to be the one organised entirely around finding out what is true.
"Science claims a search for truth that would seem to protect it from conservatism and the irrationality of habit: It is a culture of innovation."1
Greene's point is that the exemption does not exist, and he offers three names — Darwin, Salk, Planck — before letting Planck state the mechanism himself:
"A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it."1
That is the most quoted sentence in the sociology of science, and the chapter prints it in full and then gives advice that contradicts it.
The specific claim about Darwin is the chapter's boldest and needs flagging before it is used.
"when Charles Darwin published his ideas of evolution, he faced fiercer opposition from his fellow scientists than from religious authorities. His theories challenged too many fixed ideas."1
🚩 [CONTESTED] — this is a comparative historical judgement with no citation, no historian, and no date. It runs against the popular account of the Victorian reception and it is not obviously right: a good deal of the scientific establishment accepted natural selection within a decade, while religious opposition in some quarters has not ended.
The interesting version of the claim is narrower and more defensible: Darwin faced serious, sustained, technical opposition from scientists, which is a different thing from fiercer opposition, and more damaging — because a bishop's objection could be set aside as coming from outside the field, while a competent colleague's could not.
Treat the comparative claim as unsourced and the underlying observation — that the field itself was a major source of resistance — as sound, since Planck's testimony supports it directly and Planck was there.
The quotation deserves reading closely, because it makes two claims and only one of them is famous.
The famous claim is about outcome: new ideas win eventually.
The unfamous claim is about mechanism: they win "not by convincing its opponents" but by those opponents dying. Persuasion is not slow in Planck's account. It is absent. The people who held the old view go to their graves holding it, and the field changes because its membership changes.
That is a much harsher proposition than the one usually attributed to him, and it has a specific consequence: the individual mind is not the unit that changes. The population is. Any strategy aimed at converting a particular opponent is aimed at the wrong object.
It also explains why the resistance appears strongest in the most rigorous fields. If persuasion worked at all, evidence would be the lever, and science is where evidence is most concentrated. Planck's claim is that the lever does not engage — which means rigour makes no difference to the mechanism, and the appearance of a "culture of innovation" is a description of the field's turnover rate rather than of its members' open-mindedness.
Immediately after printing Planck, Greene gives the remedy:
"The answer to this innate conservatism is to play the courtier's game… pay lip service to tradition. Identify the elements in your revolution that can be made to seem to build on the past. Say the right things, make a show of conformity, and meanwhile let your theories do their radical work."2
Set that against the sentence above it.
The courtier's game is a persuasion technique. Its entire content is managing how existing authorities perceive you, so that they find your work acceptable. It assumes the people currently in charge can be brought round if approached correctly.
Planck says exactly that cannot be done. His opponents were not badly approached; they were unpersuadable, and remained so until they died.
So the chapter's diagnosis and its prescription are incompatible. If Planck is right, making a show of conformity converts nobody — the old generation is still the old generation, now with a more polite adversary.
The chapter does not notice, and the reason it does not is instructive: the quotation is being used as evidence that conservatism exists, and then discarded before its content is read. It is deployed as a colourful illustration of a problem, when it is actually a specific claim about what solves the problem — and the answer it gives is not the one the chapter wants to sell.
There is a reading on which the courtier's game is exactly right, and it is better than the chapter's own, so it is worth stating.
If ideas triumph by generational replacement, then the only thing that determines whether your version prevails is whether you and your work are still present and still respectable when the handover happens.
That reframes everything. The purpose of paying lip service to tradition is not to convert the old guard. It is to avoid being expelled by them — to keep your position, your students, your ability to publish, and your reputation intact across the decades it takes for the composition of the field to change.
Which makes the courtier's game a survival strategy for a waiting game, and a good one. The young researcher who fights the establishment on every front is not being braver; they are risking removal from the board before the mechanism that actually decides things has run.
Greene's own example concedes this without meaning to: "Galileo did this at the beginning of his scientific career; he later became more confrontational, and paid for it."2
Paid for it — not failed to persuade. Removed.
So the honest version of the instruction is: you will not win this argument, and you do not need to. You need to still be here when it stops being an argument.
The chapter observes that specialists resisted more than clergy and offers no mechanism. One is available and it is not about dogmatism.
A bishop encountering natural selection could decline to engage. It was not his field, his standing did not rest on any position about species, and he could treat it as irrelevant or as somebody else's problem.
A working biologist had no such option. His published papers, his teaching, his students, his reputation and his sense of his own competence were all built on the framework in question. He could not be neutral, because his career had already taken a position.
That gives a cleaner rule than scientists are conservative: resistance scales with sunk professional investment, not with credulity or with distance from evidence. The people best equipped to evaluate a new idea are the people with the most staked on the old one, and those two facts are the same fact — expertise is accumulated commitment.
Which also predicts where a new idea meets least resistance: among people close enough to understand it and junior enough to have invested nothing. That is precisely the population Planck says eventually carries it.
Galileo appears here in a single clause and he is doing two jobs.
Early Galileo is the courtier — and the vault holds that phase in detail as Galileo and the Medici Moons, from Law 1, where he names the moons of Jupiter after the Medici and converts a discovery into a patron relationship.
Late Galileo "became more confrontational, and paid for it."2
One man, both strategies, sequentially, with the outcomes attached. The chapter uses him as a two-word illustration and does not remark that this is the closest thing in the book to a controlled experiment: same person, same field, same era, different posture, different result.
⚠ And the sequence runs in the unhelpful direction. Galileo did not start confrontational and learn diplomacy; he started diplomatic and became confrontational, which suggests that the courtier's game is easier when you have less standing and harder to maintain once you are certain you are right. The technique is most available exactly when you need it least.
You are convinced of something in your field that the senior people are wrong about, and you have the evidence.
The instinct is to make the argument well, on the assumption that people in a serious discipline respond to serious arguments. They do, at the level of individual papers. They do not at the level you are attempting, which is asking someone to give up a framework their standing rests on.
So before you spend anything, sort the audience by what they have staked.
The most invested will not move, and not because they are stupid or dishonest — their competence and their commitment are one asset. A sharper argument aims more force at the least movable object in the room, and every increment also makes you the person attacking them.
The ones who will move are close enough to follow it and junior enough to owe the old framework nothing. They are your actual audience, and they are usually in the room, listening, while you argue with somebody else.
With the senior people the goal is not agreement but not being expelled. Cite them where they genuinely apply; frame the work as extending rather than demolishing where that is honestly available. That is not conversion and should not be expected to be. It is keeping your position while the composition of the field changes.
And notice the trap. Frame it as building on the past turns dishonest where you misdescribe what the work does, and the tell is whether a well-informed reader would feel misled on discovering the implications. Softening a real result is diplomacy. Concealing that it destroys someone's framework is something else — and it fails, at exactly the moment you needed their goodwill.
Strongest evidence is Planck's own testimony, quoted in full and given by a participant about his own reception.1 It is the only fully-attributed named source in Law 45's Keys.
Tension one — the prescription contradicts the diagnosis. Planck says opponents are not convinced; Greene's remedy is a technique for managing opponents' perceptions. The chapter does not reconcile them, and the reconciliation available — that the courtier's game buys survival rather than conversion — is not the one the chapter offers.
Tension two — Galileo runs both strategies and the chapter spends two words on it. Courtier first, confrontational later, "and paid for it."2 The closest thing to a controlled comparison in the book, unremarked.

Open question — does the mechanism require literal death, or only the departure of the invested? Retirement or a loss of institutional power might do the same work far faster, which would make the principle much less bleak and much more actionable.
Open question — how does anyone tell diplomacy from capture? Thirty years of framing radical work as continuous may end in having produced the continuous version.
The direct link is to Jonas Salk and the Scientific Orthodoxy, built from Law 38 (l.5606), where Salk "broke all the rules" — going public before the field, taking credit, becoming a star — and "wasted years trying to heal the breach."
Salk appears twice in this book and the two accounts blame opposite parties. At Law 38 the field's hostility is Salk's own fault: he violated professional norms and paid for it. At Law 45 he is a casualty of the field's "innate conservatism" — a man with "radical innovations in immunology" who ran into a wall.1
Neither chapter mentions the other, and they cannot both be complete. The pair is a useful caution about single-cause explanations in this corpus: the same episode is a lesson about self-promotion or a lesson about institutional inertia depending entirely on which chapter needs it.
Within Law 45, this passage is the only place the chapter examines a domain that ought to be exempt from its thesis — and finding conservatism there is the strongest available support for the law's generality. The hidden conservatism page covers the general mechanism; this is its hardest test case, and the law passes it.
Jonas Salk and the Scientific Orthodoxy — the Law 38 account, in which Salk's isolation follows from breaking his profession's norms: publicising before peer scrutiny, accepting personal credit for collective work, becoming a public figure.
Held against Planck, the two produce a distinction the chapter needs and never draws: there are two different walls, and they are hit for different reasons.
Planck's wall is epistemic. His opponents rejected the content — quantum theory contradicted what they knew — and no conduct on Planck's part would have altered that. He could have been impeccable and still waited for a generation.
Salk's wall, on the Law 38 account, is procedural. The field did not reject inactivated polio vaccine; it rejected how Salk behaved. That wall is entirely responsive to conduct, and the courtier's game is precisely the right remedy for it.
Law 45 merges them, listing Salk beside Planck as instances of one phenomenon. But the remedy the chapter prescribes only works on the second kind. Play the courtier's game against a procedural wall and you may well get through; play it against an epistemic one and you have bought time, not agreement — which is a good purchase, and a different one.
So the operative diagnostic before spending years on diplomacy is: are they objecting to my claim, or to me? Those look similar from inside — both arrive as hostility, both feel unfair — and they have completely different resolution times. One can be fixed this year. The other outlasts everyone involved.
The Eras Paradigm: Dismantling the Old-versus-New Binary — the argument against treating succession as replacement, where a new period is understood as superseding and invalidating the last, rather than as one layer among several that continue to coexist.
Planck's principle is the binary in its purest form, and this page is its most direct challenge.
Planck describes a clean handover: the holders of the old view die, a new generation arrives already familiar with the new one, and the field has moved. Old and new do not coexist; one replaces the other by attrition. It is a model of succession by mortality.
The eras frame says that is rarely what happens. Layers persist. The superseded framework goes on being useful in its domain, practitioners go on using it, and the "replacement" turns out to be an addition with a narrowed scope. Newtonian mechanics was not vacated when Planck won; it was bounded.
Which corrects Planck's bleakness, really. If succession is layered rather than total, the old guard's resistance is not simply an obstacle to be outlived — some of it is the accurate defence of a framework that is not being refuted, only bounded. Part of what looks like conservatism is a correct objection to an overclaim.
And that changes the young researcher's position. If you propose replacement and the truth is layering, the senior objection carries information you need — and the courtier's game, framing your work as building on the old framework, may not be a diplomatic fiction at all. It may be the accurate description, reached for the wrong reasons.
Sharpest implication. Planck's claim is not that persuasion is slow but that it is absent — the individual mind is not the unit that changes, the population is. Which means the resistance a new idea meets in an expert field is not a failure of rationality to be argued away: expertise and accumulated commitment are the same asset, so the people best equipped to evaluate an idea are structurally the people with most staked against it. The chapter prints this and then prescribes a persuasion technique. The defensible reading is the one it does not offer — the courtier's game buys not agreement but presence, keeping you on the board until the mechanism that actually decides has finished running.
Generative questions.
If the mechanism is the departure of the invested rather than literal death, retirement and reassignment should do the same work far faster. What would that predict about fields with high turnover, and is it visible?
Diplomacy and capture are the same behaviour observed at different durations. Is there any marker, available at the time, that distinguishes a researcher softening a presentation from one who has been absorbed?
If some senior resistance is the accurate defence of a framework being bounded rather than refuted, how would a young researcher tell that objection from the merely invested kind — given that both arrive as hostility?
