Menelaus tried to seize the sea-god Proteus. Greene's image:
*"His power came from his ability to change shape at will, to be whatever the moment required. When Menelaus… tried to seize him, Proteus transformed himself into a lion, then a serpent, a panther, a boar, running water, and finally a leafy tree."*1
And the law's closing instruction, with its mechanism stated in one line:
*"Learn to play many roles, to be whatever the moment requires. Adapt your mask to the situation—be protean in the faces you wear. Bismarck played this game to perfection: To a liberal he was a liberal, to a hawk he was a hawk. He could not be grasped, and what cannot be grasped cannot be consumed."*2
What cannot be grasped cannot be consumed is the sharpest formulation in Law 25, and it is worth being precise about what it says.
It is not a claim about being believed. Proteus does not fool Menelaus — Menelaus knows exactly who he is holding, which is the entire premise of the myth.
It is a claim about being held. An adversary who wants to destroy you needs a fixed thing to attack: a stated position, a known allegiance, a definite character. Shape-shifting removes the surface, not the identity.
Which is why Bismarck is the right example and a strange one. His liberals and his hawks were not deceived about the man being ambitious; they were unable to establish what he was committed to — and commitment is what gives an opponent something to work against.
The myth contains its own limit and Greene reports the shapes without the ending.
In the story Menelaus holds on. He is told in advance that Proteus will transform, instructed to grip through every form, and does — and when the shapes are exhausted, Proteus resumes his own shape and answers the questions.
Shape-shifting is a delaying tactic that works against everyone except the one person who has been told what is coming.
Greene's version stops at the leafy tree, which makes the technique look complete. The complete version says protean adaptability defeats improvisation and fails against preparation — and the prepared adversary is precisely the dangerous one.
That is not a small omission. It converts the law from a way of being invulnerable into a way of surviving people who are not paying close attention, which is most people, and not the ones who matter.
Gracián supplies the chapter's Authority and quietly narrows the instruction:
*"Know how to be all things to all men. A discreet Proteus—a scholar among scholars, a saint among saints. That is the art of winning over everyone, for like attracts like. Take note of temperaments and adapt yourself to that of each person you meet—follow the lead of the serious and jovial in turn, changing your mood discreetly."*3
Discreet, twice.
Gracián's mechanism is "like attracts like" — you are not concealing yourself, you are producing similarity, which is a rapport technique rather than an evasion technique.
So the Authority and the Judgment are doing different things. Bismarck's protean shifting is defensive — it denies opponents a grip. Gracián's is affiliative — it makes people feel met. The chapter treats them as one instruction, and they have different aims, different audiences, and different failure modes.
Then the Reversal, which is not one:
*"There can really be no reversal to this critical law: Bad theater is bad theater. Even appearing natural requires art—in other words, acting. Bad acting only creates embarrassment. Of course you should not be too dramatic—avoid the histrionic gesture. But that is simply bad theater anyway, since it violates centuries-old dramatic laws against overacting. In essence there is no reversal to this law."*4
This is the corpus's seventh self-declared exceptionless law. The running list was 5, 10, 19, 35, 37 and 43; Law 25 belongs on it, verified against the source rather than assumed.
And note how the argument works. Greene raises the obvious objection — don't overdo it — and absorbs it rather than conceding it: overacting is not an exception to the law but a violation of the law's own standards, "bad theater anyway."
The law is constructed so that its failures are re-classified as instances of failing to follow it. That is unfalsifiable in the strict sense: no observation of theatricality going wrong can count against the instruction.
Which puts a pointed question to the book. A manual whose closing law is assume formlessness, and whose recurring virtue is flexibility, contains seven laws it declares unbreakable. The protean strategist is being handed seven fixed shapes.
Worth recording as a build finding: the Brecht HUAC episode appears here for the third time in this book.
The full scene is Law 22's Observance. The build-once list flags a second telling at Law 38. It is also here, compressed, at l.3561 — with details the Law 22 version does not have: "He carefully rehearsed his responses, and brought along some props", and "they let him off scot-free."5
Three tellings of one afternoon across one book, and the corpus's build-once-cross-reference list has two of them.
You are dealing with people who want to categorise you, and the category will limit what you are given.
Use the grip test rather than the honesty test, because that is what the technique actually addresses. What would someone need to establish about you in order to move against you effectively? Usually a commitment: to a faction, a position, a fixed account of what you want. Those are the handholds.
Then be honest about which of the two versions you are running, since the chapter conflates them.
The defensive version — Bismarck's — declines to supply the handhold. Keep your commitments genuinely open where they are genuinely open; do not state a position you have not reached in order to seem definite.
The affiliative version — Gracián's — produces similarity so that people feel met. "A scholar among scholars", adapting to temperament, changing your mood discreetly. This is rapport, it is mostly benign, and it is a different activity.
Confusing them is what produces the person nobody trusts: affiliative shifting deployed defensively reads as having no centre, and defensive opacity deployed socially reads as coldness.
And keep the myth's ending in view, because it is the operative limit. Menelaus was told what would happen and held on. Shape-shifting buys time against improvisers and fails against anyone who has prepared for it — so the question is not whether you can transform, but whether the person across from you already knows you will.
The strongest material is "what cannot be grasped cannot be consumed" — a precise mechanism about denying an adversary a fixed target, distinct from deception and testable.
Tension: the myth's ending is omitted and it contains the limit. Proteus is held, exhausts his forms, and answers; the technique defeats improvisation and fails against preparation.
Tension: the Authority and the Judgment prescribe different activities. Gracián's "like attracts like" is affiliative rapport; Bismarck's shifting is defensive evasion.

Open questions. Does protean adaptability have a floor — Gracián says discreet, Greene says be whatever the moment requires, and neither says what happens to a person with no fixed commitments at all. And: is the technique available to anyone without Bismarck's standing? A powerful man whose position is unclear is intriguing; a junior one is unreliable, and the chapter does not distinguish them.
Against the chapter's own marginal, this page is the celebration and Casanova is the invoice. Greene: shape-shifting makes you unconsumable. Casanova: the honest practitioner must "suffer quietly… knowing himself an arrant hypocrite" — and the exemplar disclaims all but one of the required qualities.
Set beside Sand, the two show protean practice with and without a fixed point. Sand changed the character's content repeatedly and kept a private self intact. Proteus has no such reservation — be whatever the moment requires is a full-time instruction with no interior specified. Sand is the version that survives; the chapter's stated law is the version that does not.
And against the corpus's running list of exceptionless laws, this is the seventh — 5, 10, 19, 35, 37, 43, 25. A book that ends in formlessness has declared seven of its own instructions unbreakable, which is the collision the generative tail is being built around.
Psychology — Voice Dialogue and Sub-Personalities
That page treats the self as an inner committee — multiple sub-personalities, each with its own agenda and voice, and the therapeutic work of making them visible rather than pretending there is one unified actor.
Greene's protean reader is being told to acquire what that page says is already the case.
What the pair produces: multiplicity is the default condition, so the law's real content is not becoming many but gaining conscious control of which one is speaking. Greene writes as though the reader begins unified and must learn to fragment strategically.
The sub-personality frame says the fragmentation is standing — several selves are already taking turns, driven by context, largely unmanaged.
Which recasts be protean as a much more modest and more achievable instruction: notice which sub-personality the situation is summoning, and decide whether that is the one you want. Not shape-shifting but casting.
And it locates the actual danger, which is not insincerity. A person who deploys sub-personalities deliberately without any awareness of the committee loses track of which one is the operator — which is precisely Casanova's terminal state, unable to say whether he is praising or excusing himself. The therapeutic requirement is an aware self that does the choosing, and Greene's law specifies no such position.

That page holds a classical taxonomy of which body can play which body — formal constraints on the roles a given performer can credibly take.
Greene's "be whatever the moment requires" has no constraints at all.
What the pair produces: protean range is bounded by the material, and a tradition that formalised the bounds is more useful than one that denies they exist. The taxonomy exists because performers who take roles outside their range fail visibly — and the failure is not effort but mismatch.
Casanova's disclaimer is the same observation from the inside: of twelve qualities he had one. The full protean specification is a range almost nobody has, and attempting the parts outside it produces exactly the "bad theater" Greene's Reversal dismisses without explaining.
So the Reversal's bad acting only creates embarrassment is describing range violation and calling it insufficient skill. The classical frame separates the two: some failures are under-practised and some are miscast, and the second is not repaired by trying harder.
