A Composer Picks the Notes Before the Words

A composer is scoring a scene. The director has told her the scene is erotic-comic — playful courtship between two characters with light comic friction underneath. The composer reaches for her instrument and finds her hand making specific choices. Madhyama dominates. Pañcama follows. The melody settles into a register that does not climb toward the high notes or descend into the low. The composer would not be able to explain in conscious vocabulary why these notes belong here and not others. Her body knows.

A few hours later, the composer scores a different scene. The director says: heroic. The body changes its choices automatically. Ṣaḍja takes the foundation. Ṛṣabha adds the second register. The melody finds the energy of decision. Different notes for different rasa — and the composer's body knows the difference even when her conscious mind has not been formally taught it.

Bharata at NS Ch 28-29 names what the composer's body knows: specific notes carry specific Sentiments, and the composer's job is to deploy the rasa-appropriate notes. NS XXIX.13-14 gives the rule plainly: "a song in the Erotic and the Comic Sentiments should abound in many Madhyamas and Pañcamas; in the Heroic, the Furious and the Marvellous Sentiments, songs should be made with many Ṣaḍjas and Ṛṣabhas. And the song in the Pathetic Sentiment should be full of many Gāndhāras and Niṣādas. Similarly a song in the Odious and the Terrible Sentiments should have many Dhaivatas."1 The framework is not impressionistic. It is operationally precise note-to-rasa mapping.

The Jāti System

Underneath the note-to-rasa rule sits the framework's deeper structure: the jātis — eighteen named melody-types that organize the seven notes into specific arrangements with characteristic deployments.2 Each jāti is a named melodic configuration with specified Aṃśa note (the melodic center), specified Graha note (the starting note), specified Apanyāsa and Nyāsa notes (intermediate and final cadences), and specified weak-vs-strong notes.

NS XXIX.1-11 assigns specific jātis to specific rasas: the Ṣaḍjodīcyavatī and Ṣaḍjamadhyā for the Erotic and Comic Sentiments (because Madhyama and Pañcama are amplified in them).3 The Ṣāḍjī and Ārṣabhī for the Heroic, Furious, and Marvellous Sentiments (with Ṣaḍja and Ṛṣabha as their Graha notes).4 The Naiṣādī and Ṣaḍjakaiśikī for the Pathetic Sentiment (with Niṣāda and Gāndhāra as Aṃśa notes).5 The Dhaivatī for the Odious and Terrible Sentiments (with Dhaivata as Aṃśa note).6 The Ṣaḍjamadhyā is the framework's unique exception — "only the Ṣaḍjamadhyā is the Jāti which can accommodate all the Sentiments. All notes [of the Grāma] may be its Aṃśa."7

The framework's claim is that jāti-selection determines rasa-payload. A composer who chooses the wrong jāti for the scene's rasa produces musical-content that conflicts with dramatic-content; a composer who matches them produces musical-content that reinforces and amplifies the dramatic-content because the music and the drama are encoding the same rasa.

What This Encodes

This is music-as-emotion-engineering from 200 CE. The framework treats the composer as a rasa-deployer — not as an autonomous artist expressing personal feeling, but as a craft-practitioner who has internalized the note-to-rasa mapping and selects accordingly for the dramatic-context. The composer's body knows because the body has been trained in the catalog.

This is also the foundational structure that became the Indian rāga system. NS XXIX.1 footnote explicitly notes that the jāti-to-rasa matching "ultimately led to the formation of the Rāgas of the later Indian Music, in which the particular melody-types were meant not only to create a Sentiment appropriate to a situation in a play, but also to act on the hearers' emotion in such a way that they might experience in imagination the particular situations described in isolated songs as well."8 The classical Indian rāga system as it stands today is a developmental extension of NS's jāti-rasa codification — the same operational claim (specific melody-types produce specific emotional states in the receiver) developed over two millennia into the most rigorous codified emotion-music system in world music tradition.

Modern Content Creation Application

The framework's claim translates directly into modern audio production decisions.

As scoring-decision diagnostic. Before scoring a scene or composing music for a content-context, identify the target rasa. NS provides explicit note-and-melody-type guidance for each of the eight rasas. Modern Western scoring conventions partially preserve this (minor-keys for sad scenes, ascending lines for triumph) but with much less granular vocabulary than NS supplies. Recovery would change scoring-craft training substantively.

As emotion-engineering discipline. The framework's working assumption is that music produces rasa-states in receivers operationally and reliably, not as artistic-mystery. A composer who deploys the rasa-correct apparatus produces the rasa-effect; one who does not, produces musical-content that conflicts with the scene's emotional payload. Modern content producers who score by feel rather than by explicit rasa-targeting may be operating below the framework's resolution.

As content-emotion mapping for non-musical work. The note-to-rasa mapping (Ṣaḍja-Ṛṣabha = Heroic; Madhyama-Pañcama = Erotic-Comic; Gāndhāra-Niṣāda = Pathetic; Dhaivata = Odious-Terrible) translates into broader compositional principles for any content-form. Heroic content benefits from foundational-and-second-register emphasis; erotic-comic content benefits from middle-register emphasis; pathetic content benefits from third-and-seventh emphasis. The body of the listener cannot register the pathetic because the music is delivering different emotional information than the visuals.

The framework names what her trained body was missing the language for.

This is the framework's working position. Music-as-rasa-craft requires explicit operational vocabulary. The composer who works only by feel can produce strong work in their default-register but cannot diagnose when they have drifted out of register for the scene's rasa-target.
