Watch a romance and the music settles into Ma and Pa — the fourth and fifth — and the body receives the conversational-romantic register. Watch a horror scene and the music sits on Dha — the sixth, with its specific tonal-harshness — and the body receives the dread.

The composer is doing what NS XIX.38-40 names: matching specific musical notes (svaras) to specific rasas the scene requires.1 Each of the seven Indian musical notes is emotionally loaded. Different notes produce different emotional registers in the listening body. The composition's choice of which notes dominate is part of the rasa-production mechanism.

NS XIX.38-40 gives the pairings:2

Madhyama (Ma) and Pañcama (Pa) for the Comic and Erotic Sentiments — the middle-of-the-scale notes for the middle-of-the-emotional-spectrum content.
