The great nineteenth-century magician Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin took explicit notice of this effect: "The more slowly a story is told, the shorter it seems."1
It reads like a paradox and it is a precise technical observation, made by a working practitioner about a working problem.
And it sits inside Greene's fuller statement of the mechanism:
Magicians have always known that the best way to alter our perception of time is often to slow down the pace. Creating suspense brings time to a terrifying pause: The slower the magician's hands move, the easier it is to create the illusion of speed, making people think the rabbit has appeared instantaneously.2
The sentence resolves once you separate elapsed time from remembered duration, which are estimated by different means.
A story told quickly is hard to follow. The listener is doing work — reconstructing, catching up, holding several unresolved things at once — and effort is one of the main things duration estimates are built from. The story ends and feels like it took a while, because a lot happened to the listener.
A story told slowly asks nothing. Each element arrives before it is needed, nothing accumulates unresolved, and the listener is carried rather than working. Afterwards there is very little of the effort that duration estimation runs on, so the estimate comes back short.
Robert-Houdin is not saying slowness feels good. He is saying it removes the material from which length is inferred.
⚠ Which makes it the inverse of the ordinary intuition, and reliably so — the fast version is the one that feels long. Anyone who has sat through a hurried presentation and a leisurely one knows which felt longer, and it is not the one that took more minutes.
The slower the magician's hands move, the easier it is to create the illusion of speed.
This is the operational version and it is worth being exact about, because two different things are being purchased.
Slow hands establish a rate. The audience watches long enough to form an expectation of how fast this person's hands move — not consciously, and not as a judgement, just as a settled background.
The effect is then measured against that rate. The rabbit does not appear quickly in any absolute sense. It appears quickly relative to a baseline the magician spent the previous minute installing, and the astonishment is the size of the gap.
Which means the technique's active phase is before anything happens. The slowness is not preparation for the trick; it is a component of the trick, and it is the component that is invisible because it looks like nothing being done.
The corpus can now state a pattern the book distributes across chapters without connecting.
Selassie at the League (Law 34) — the effect is produced by the audience's comparison of two things in the room; he does nothing. Houdini's hour (Law 35) — the escape is possible in minutes and is drawn out, so that the escape is measured against the struggle. Robert-Houdin's hands — the baseline is installed so the effect can exceed it.
In all three the operator's active contribution is the establishment of a reference point, and the moment everyone remembers is the one they did least in.
⚠ That is a general finding and it is not in any of the three chapters: perceived magnitude is a ratio, and the denominator is cheaper to control than the numerator. You cannot easily be twice as fast. You can very easily have been visibly slower for the preceding ten minutes.
Greene folds this into forced time — "upsetting the timing of others." It is not that.
Forced time acts on the opponent's schedule: make them wait, make them hurry, distort their pace. Robert-Houdin's technique does not touch the audience's pace at all. They are not hurried and not delayed. What is altered is the standard against which they will later measure something.
⚠ This is a fifth operation and it belongs to the performer's own conduct, not the target's — which is why it is the only one of Law 35's techniques with no adversary in it. It works identically on an audience that wishes you well.
Record it as a distinct mechanism: baseline setting. Forced time attacks the clock; this sets the ruler.

You want something you do to land as impressive, and your instinct is to do it better or faster.
Work on the denominator. The impression is a ratio between what happens and what was expected, and the expectation is the half you can set at your leisure, in advance, at no cost.
The practical forms are unglamorous.
Be visibly unhurried in the period before it matters. Not slow at the thing — slow around it. Answering considerately, moving without rush, taking the pause before speaking. This installs a rate, and everything you subsequently do quickly is measured against it. A person known for deliberation who responds within the hour has produced an effect a fast person cannot buy.
And when you are explaining something, go slower than feels right. Robert-Houdin's line is directly usable here: the compressed version is the one your audience will remember as long. Density costs the listener effort and effort is what length is estimated from. If you want to be remembered as brief, do not speak quickly — remove material and deliver what remains at a pace that asks nothing.
⚠ The limit worth stating: this manages perception and does not create capability. The rabbit still has to appear. Baseline setting makes a real thing land harder, and applied to nothing it produces a slow person with an anticlimax.
Strongest evidence. A working practitioner's technical observation about his own craft, consistent with a plausible mechanism (duration estimated from processing effort) and with a second independent case in the same passage (Houdini's stretched escape).
Tension — Greene files this under forced time and it does not act on the target's schedule at all. It is a fifth operation with no adversary in it.

Open questions. Does the effect require an audience that stays? A slow story that a listener leaves has not produced a short-seeming story; it has produced no story. The technique presupposes a captive attention — a theatre, a client in a room, a court — and the chapter does not say what it does in conditions where attention can walk away, which is most conditions now.
This sits inside forced time and does not belong to it, which the corpus should record as a taxonomy error rather than a disagreement.
Against Selassie one law earlier, the structural identity is exact and unremarked: both produce an effect entirely from a comparison, and in both the operator's contribution is to have established one side of it and then done nothing. ⚠ The corpus now has three instances across two laws and can state the general form.
And against Law 30's effortless mastery there is a genuine tension. That law says conceal the labour so the result looks easy. This one says display the labour — Houdini's visible hour of struggle — so the result looks miraculous. Both are about managing the perceived relationship between effort and outcome, and they prescribe opposite displays. ⚠ The variable that decides is not in either chapter; on the evidence here it looks like whether you are selling competence (hide the work) or spectacle (show it), but two chapters is not enough to state that with confidence.
Indian dramaturgy — tempo as the measured substrate. Tāla as Foundation of Performance has Bharata state that performance "is based on the Tāla" — time-measure is not decoration but the structure the whole thing is erected on, and it "always gives it proper measure."
Robert-Houdin's observation is a Western practitioner arriving at the same place from the stage side.
The insight neither produces alone: Greene reads slowness as a trick — a manipulation applied to an audience's faculty. The tāla frame says the rate is constitutive, the thing against which every element in the performance acquires its value, which is a much stronger claim and the one Robert-Houdin's paradox actually needs. If tempo is merely applied, a slow delivery should feel slow; it is only if the tempo is the measuring instrument that a slow delivery can make its own content seem short. So the pairing yields the mechanism's real shape: the performer is not altering the audience's perception, the performer is supplying the unit — and a unit, once accepted, silently governs every judgement made inside it. Which explains why the technique's active phase is before anything happens, and why it is invisible.
Cognitive psychology — duration inferred from effort. Embodied Memory, Performance and Rhythm treats remembered experience as reconstructed from what the body and attention did during it, rather than retrieved as a record.
That supplies the causal account behind "the more slowly a story is told, the shorter it seems."
What the pairing produces: the paradox dissolves and something more useful appears in its place. If duration is reconstructed from processing load, then remembered length tracks the listener's work, not the clock — and a fast delivery is expensive to process, which is why it is remembered as long. But the reconstruction frame adds what Robert-Houdin could not have known: the effect is not symmetrical in what it preserves. The slow version seems short and is retained better, because the low-load condition is the one in which encoding actually completes; the fast version seems long and leaves less behind. So the practitioner's rule and the memory finding point the same way for different reasons, and together they close a gap the chapter leaves open: slowing down is not a trade of clarity for impression — you get both, and the thing you sacrifice is quantity of material, which is the only real cost and the one people are least willing to pay.
