Every chart has twelve houses, nine planets, eight chara karakas. Most of the architecture comes pre-built. Sahams are different: they're computed sensitive points — derived from specific arithmetic combinations of planetary positions — and each one represents a particular life-matter. Vivaha saham is the marriage-point. Rajya saham is the kingdom-point. Mrityu saham is the death-point. Paradesa saham is the foreign-country-point. Thirty-six of them altogether, each computed from a precise formula like A − B + C, where the planets feeding the formula encode what the saham represents.1
Rao chapter 28.8 catalogs the 36-saham master reference. The doctrine integrates with both Tajaka (annual-chart) analysis and natal-chart transit analysis. Sahams produce predictions the standard house-and-planet apparatus misses — life-matter-specific sensitive points beyond the standard structural references.
The basic formula: each saham is A − B + C, where A, B, and C are specific planets or houses. For Punya saham (fortune/good deeds), the formula is Moon − Sun + Lagna. For Vidya saham (education), Sun − Moon + Lagna. The arithmetic computes a zodiacal position that becomes the saham's location.2
The day/night variation: for most sahams, the formula given as A − B + C applies to daytime charts. For nighttime charts, it reverses to B − A + C. Sahams marked "(same for day & night)" don't reverse — they apply uniformly.
The 36-saham roster (selected):
Each saham produces a zodiacal point — a longitude position that marks the chart's "sensitive point" for that specific life-matter.3
The doctrine treats the computed point as operationally equivalent to a planet at that point. A saham can be aspected, conjoined, transited, occupied — all the standard chart-relationships apply to the saham just as they apply to natal planets. A transiting planet passing close to vivaha saham during a favorable time-period predicts marriage; a transiting malefic close to mrityu saham predicts difficulty related to death/8th-house matters.
The formulas encode the significance-architecture of each saham. Punya saham = Moon − Sun + Lagna combines the lunar-self (Moon), solar-soul (Sun), and lagna (life-anchor) — a triple-encoding of the karmic-fortune point. Vivaha saham = Venus − Saturn + Lagna combines Venus (relationship/love), Saturn (long-term-commitment), and lagna — encoding the marriage-significance point as the intersection of romance, commitment, and self. The arithmetic is structurally meaningful.
The day/night reversal encodes that some sahams are direction-sensitive. A daytime-conceived chart has different energy-flow than a nighttime-conceived chart, and certain sahams (those involving Sun/Moon directly) need to flip the directionality accordingly.
Sahams integrate with the Tajaka annual-chart system primarily. An annual chart computed for a specific year contains sahams positioned at specific zodiacal points for that year. Rao at line 9788: "If there are good yogas in an annual chart involving the lord of the rasi containing an important saham and lagna lord, then important events related to the matter of the saham may materialize during the year." The annual-chart-saham-position predicts year-specific events.
Sahams also operate in natal charts as long-duration sensitive points. Transit planets passing close to natal sahams trigger the saham's matter. Rao at line 9790: "When Jupiter occupies or aspects natal vivaha saham in transit, one may get married. When Saturn or Rahu transits close to natal paradesa saham or jalapatana saham, one may go abroad."
The doctrine connects to Western astrology's Arabian Parts (Lot of Fortune, Lot of Spirit, etc.) — Rao at line 9792 explicitly notes the similarity. The Arabian-Parts tradition uses the same A − B + C arithmetic. Whether the Indian and Arabic traditions independently arrived at the same apparatus or one borrowed from the other is open; the convergence is structurally identical.
Rao's wedding-example at line 8051: a male engineer whose natal vivaha saham sits at 1° Capricorn. On his wedding day, transit Jupiter (lagna lord, natural benefic) occupied Pisces, aspecting Virgo (natal 7th) and Cancer (natal 7th lord position). Natal 7th lord Mercury occupied Capricorn in transit and aspected Cancer (his natal-position rashi). Critically: transit Mercury was stationed about 1° away from natal vivaha saham.
Four convergent indicators: Jupiter aspecting natal 7th, Mercury aspecting his natal position, Mercury near natal vivaha saham, Venus aspecting his natal position. The saham-proximity is the most specific indicator — Mercury within 1° of vivaha saham at the wedding moment is structurally exact.
A practitioner reading transit-to-7th-house alone might have predicted marriage timing but missed the saham-confirmation. The integrated reading uses transit-to-7th plus transit-to-natal-7th-lord plus transit-to-natal-saham — three-channel confirmation. The saham is the highest-resolution indicator in the integration.
It is 9am. You're predicting a specific life-event for a native — say, marriage timing.
You identify the saham relevant to the question (vivaha saham for marriage). You compute it using the formula from Table 74. (Software does this automatically; manual calculation is precise but slow.)
You note the saham's natal zodiacal position. You check upcoming transit periods: when will the relevant planets (lagna lord, 7th lord, natural benefics like Jupiter and Venus, or planet of the saham's domain) transit close to or aspect the natal saham?
You combine with dasha-period analysis: is the dasha favorable for the event? You combine with other transit-indicators (Tara, Vedha, Murthi). Integrated prediction produces specific event-windows.
For broader analysis, you may compute multiple sahams (vivaha for marriage, artha for money, paradesa for foreign-travel) and check current transit-proximities to each. The 36-saham screen produces life-area-specific event-windows. Time elapsed: thirty minutes for full saham-screen.
The apparatus fails when the practitioner over-emphasizes sahams without dasha and base-transit context. A transit close to a saham produces potential activation of that saham's matter; whether the activation manifests depends on dasha favorability and broader chart conditions. A reader who predicts marriage from vivaha-saham proximity alone, without dasha confirmation, produces unreliable predictions.
A second failure is mis-computing the saham. The A − B + C arithmetic with day/night reversals is error-prone in manual computation. A wrong saham position produces fictitious activation-points. Software computation avoids this.
A third failure is treating all 36 sahams as equally operational. The most-used sahams are Punya, Vivaha, Mrityu, Rajya, Artha, Paradesa, Putra, Roga — the life-area sahams with high practical-question frequency. Rarely-asked sahams (Jadya for chronic disease, Apamrityu for bad death) are operationally valid but less frequently checked. A reader running all 36 every reading produces noise.
A fourth failure is over-extending into prediction certainty. Sahams identify sensitive points; they don't determine outcomes. A transit close to vivaha saham makes marriage more likely during that window, but doesn't guarantee it. The activation requires multiple-channel convergence.
The 36-saham apparatus is set out in Rao chapter 28.8, lines 9720–9794, with Table 74 listing all 36 with formulas.4 The classical source is Tajaka tradition (Persian/Arabic-influenced); the apparatus has substantial overlap with the Western Arabian-Parts tradition.
The standing tension: the Tajaka-tradition's origin is debated. Rao at line 9794 acknowledges the possibility that Indian astrologers learned the Tajaka apparatus from Arabs but argues that "astrology as practiced in India is much superior in width and depth" and may have "exported" the knowledge to other traditions. The historical-priority question is unresolved; the operational apparatus is shared.
A second tension: the day/night reversal rule isn't applied to all sahams. Some sahams (Mrityu, Paradesa, Artha, Vyapara, Bhratri, Labha, Jalapatana) are explicitly marked "same for day & night" — they don't reverse. The criterion for which sahams reverse and which don't isn't always articulated; classical tradition codifies it empirically.
Rao transmits the 36-saham apparatus with stable definitions matching the broader Tajaka tradition. The Sanjay-Rath lineage (Foss, Larsen) carries the apparatus forward intact. The Kurczak/Fish/Pai/DiCara lineages give less prominent treatment to sahams; their natal-chart and Vimsottari analysis doesn't routinely integrate saham-points. The lineage-divergence shapes how operationally central sahams are in different practitioner traditions.
The Western Arabian-Parts tradition runs structurally identical apparatus with somewhat different lists and emphases. The cross-tradition comparison is open territory.
The saham architecture is a computed sensitive-point apparatus — generating life-area-specific reference points through arithmetic combinations of base-position data. Several other vault domains run on similar computed-reference logic.

The handshake reveals: arithmetic combinations of base-representations producing meaningful derived-representations is a generalizable computational pattern. The saham apparatus encoded this for chart-analysis two millennia before vector-space NLP arrived at it independently.
Creative Practice: Character Arc Architecture — Story-design uses thematic significance points — moments in the narrative where multiple thematic threads converge. The saham doctrine formalizes the same insight: computed points where multiple base-references converge produce significance-rich locations. Writers could systematize this by computing explicit narrative sahams — moments where character-arc, plot-action, and thematic-statement converge through specific arithmetic-like combinations.
The Sharpest Implication
If you accept the saham apparatus, arithmetic combinations of base-data produce meaningful new reference points. The chart isn't limited to its native architecture (twelve houses, nine planets, eight karakas); arithmetic on the architecture produces 36 additional life-area-specific points, each with its own significance. Generalize: in any data-rich system, the derived points generated by structural-arithmetic on base-data may carry more operational significance than the base-data alone. The skilled practitioner attends to derived-points as well as base-data.
