He bows to his opponent and finds himself facing a frail boy who walks with a slight limp from some congenital condition. Lowry is not the strongest judoka in the room, but he can clearly defeat this opponent effortlessly. What does he do?
Go out and slam him? Throw him with a spectacular technique he could never pull off against a well-matched opponent? Or ease off out of pity? The adolescent urge to show off competes with the fear of being thought a bully. "Great job. You beat a kid with a limp." Whatever Lowry does, he cannot quite win.
What occurs to him as he takes grip: advice he's heard from his teachers many times. Use what's necessary to defeat the opponent. Nothing less. Nothing more. He moves about, tries to feel the opponent's level. The moment he senses an opening, he throws him. Not a spectacular technique. Just the technique that works. Nothing more, nothing less.1
This is seiryoku zenyo — Jigoro Kano's foundational maxim. Usually translated as "maximum efficiency with minimum effort." But the translation undersells it. Seiryoku zenyo isn't about being efficient. It is about conserving energy precisely — using only what is necessary, being able to ramp up or modulate down as circumstances dictate, never wasting force.
Lowry tells a story to make the point concrete. A young karateka had built a reputation for breaking boards — specifically, multiple breaks in choreographed displays, kicking front, turning, striking left, pivoting, punching right, going around a circle of board-holders breaking each. The demonstration was visually impressive. The boards were pine.
At one such demonstration, senior dojo members snuck in — alongside the pine — a couple of boards of poplar, a very light wood. A child could have punched through them.
The karateka began his tour de force, spinning and punching and kicking, screaming furiously. He struck the poplar boards with a furious knife-hand blow — and went right through them, losing his balance, crashing into the men holding the wood.1
He used maximum effort. Efficiency-be-damned. Far more force than needed to do the job. That's the failure-mode seiryoku zenyo guards against. Energy is the most precious commodity in any combative situation. Use it carelessly and you are soon out of it.
For the budoka, watching predators hunt prey is useful training. Predators are models of efficiency. Tigers do not roar or jump about before making a kill — they do only what they need to do. Lions chasing a herd of wildebeest that get too much of a head start will not pursue forever. You can almost see the lion calculating, figuring how much energy output is worth the possible reward.1
Good combative systems are extraordinary studies in efficiency. In training, we exaggerate — lower stances than we'd use in combat, multi-counter sequences against single attacks, repeated techniques for muscular development. The exaggeration is deliberate; it builds capacity that exceeds what we'll need so we have margin in actual use. In combat or sporting application, we go the opposite direction: simplicity, efficiency, minimum required force. Tigers spend cubhood wrestling and stalking each other (exaggerated training); adults make efficient kills (combat efficiency).
The beginner's failure mode is to use full force when learning — going 100% energy on every technique. It's natural but wrong. Think of learning piano: hitting keys harder doesn't help. In budo, power comes after one has learned correct form, distancing, and timing. Not because power doesn't matter — but because power is the most difficult variable to manage. Too little fails the task. Too much wastes the resource you can't afford to spend.
Lowry's running joke: he'd like to compile a video collection of cinematic sword-twirling — those movie scenes where combatants spin their swords like batons before the fight starts. The seiryoku zenyo maxim is well-documented in Kano's foundational writings on judo and in standard judo curriculum.
