Walk into the dojo of a classical Japanese stick-fighting ryu and watch what the practitioners are holding. Some hold staffs reaching from the floor to a precise point on their body — the ear, the breastbone, the hip. The exact lengths vary practitioner to practitioner. Two members of the same ryu may carry visibly different-length sticks. They are not making errors. They are using takabakari — the old custom of measuring weapons against the user's own body.1
In a culture that prized standardization for many things, weapon length was intentionally individualized for many martial arts. The unit of measure called a sun was defined, roughly, by the distance between your fingertip and its first joint. A shaku was the length between your wrist and elbow. (Karateka will recognize sun in sun-dome — the stopping of an attack one sun from the target for safety. Staff practitioners will recognize shaku in rokushaku-bo — a six-shaku staff.)
Different stick weapons were measured by takabakari according to different body landmarks:
(Lowry notes: cutting objects with the sword other than human bodies is technically suemono-giri, not tameshigiri — the latter referring to test-cutting against bodies, the former against fixed objects. The terminology is precise.)
Tanbo (short stick) and hanbo (half stick) terminology is variable in modern usage. There is no "official" measurement. What constitutes a "half stick" depends on what the ryu calls a full bo. Often these too are sized through takabakari — the tanbo as some variation of the elbow-to-hand ratio; the hanbo as approximately the measurement between the ground and a user's hip or navel.
The general principle: in classical ryu, the practitioner customized weapon dimensions to their own body. Each warrior carried weapons sized to him, not to a standardized blueprint.1
Lowry extracts two practical lessons from takabakari, neither of which depends on actually using these old measurements.
Lesson 1: The classical warrior was not blindly loyal to standardized methods. Contrary to popular assumptions about the rigidity of classical arts, the fighting man recognized the need to be flexible and to modify things if necessary. The practical mind of the working warrior took precedence over stylistic conformity. The classical warrior who cuts his bo to the height of his own ear is making a practical decision that no central authority told him to make. He is exercising what dento-kosho would later name as kosho — personal interpretation within the form.1
Lesson 2: An uncritical reliance on dogma or inflexible standards is perhaps useful for a certain stage of learning. Rote learning, just trying to absorb the lessons uncritically and doing it "because Sensei says so," is sufficient until we gain a deeper understanding of a practice. As one advances in a realistic combative art, however, this attitude can become robotic and stale. Always under the guidance of a qualified teacher, we eventually have to begin to make the art our own.
This is the developmental-stage trigger Lowry plants in multiple chapters. Early-stage: standardize. Mid-stage: develop the grammar that lets you adapt. Late-stage: personalize within the form. The takabakari practice is one ancient example of the late-stage move — adapting equipment to the practitioner's body.
In passing, Lowry resolves a common student question. Most students know a jo is shorter than a bo, but when does one become the other?
There is no definitive answer. Some schools using a stick would call it a bo while others, using one roughly the same length, would call it a jo. As a very general rule: some practitioners consider a jo a stick short enough to be manipulated to strike with one end and then the other in a single motion. A bo is long enough that there must be an intermediary movement when going from the proximal to the distal end. The distinction is functional, not absolute.1
The takabakari practice is well-documented across multiple classical Japanese stick-arts ryu. The specific terminology (mimikiri-bo, chigiri-bo, etc.) is preserved in ryu-internal texts. The general practice of body-calibrated weapon measurement was widespread across feudal Japan.
Tension to preserve: In many ryu, weapon dimensions are fixed and standardized — Shibukawa ryu jutte, Tatsumi ryu bo. The takabakari approach is one option among several. Some ryu retained body-calibration; others standardized for specific tactical or pedagogical reasons. The two approaches are both legitimate within classical practice; neither is universally correct.
Open question: Does takabakari extend to weapons beyond stick-arts? Were swords ever individualized similarly, or did the costliness of forging make sword-customization different? The historical record suggests sword length had more practical and economic constraints, but practitioner-preference may have operated within those constraints.
Lowry and the Ratti/Westbrook cluster converge on the principle that classical practitioners exercised more personal-adaptation flexibility than modern romantic notions of "samurai tradition" suggest. Ratti/Westbrook document how individual ryu varied widely in their technical specifications; Lowry adds takabakari as a specific mechanism for individual-within-ryu variation. The rigid-tradition image of feudal Japan is partly Western projection. The actual classical practitioners were adaptive within the form.
Where the two authors look is at different layers of variation. Ratti/Westbrook focus on between-ryu variation — the differences in technical content across the 159 schools they document. Lowry focuses on within-ryu variation — the differences in equipment dimensions among practitioners of a single school. Both are real, and together they reveal that the form was a generative structure that produced varied implementations rather than a rigid template. Modern American budo culture often imports a stereotype-of-rigidity that did not exist in the originals. The real classical practitioners would have looked at Western dojo's standardized everything-the-same equipment and been puzzled by the loss of adaptation that they took for granted.
The takabakari principle generalizes as a body-calibrated-equipment principle applicable across many embodied practices.

The handshake produces a portable principle: where the human body is the operating substrate, equipment fitted to the individual body outperforms standardized equipment for performance applications. Standardization wins on cost, accessibility, and average-fit; individualization wins on peak performance.
Creative-practice — tools-fitted-to-practitioner: Writers who use specific pens or keyboards, chefs who carry their own knives, artisans whose tools are extensions of their bodies — all are practicing analogues of takabakari. The handshake reveals: the body-calibrated-equipment principle is a marker of advanced practice. Beginners use whatever tools are available. Mature practitioners adapt or build tools to their specific way of working. The tool-body fit becomes part of the practitioner's edge.
Cross-domain — disability-as-design-window and body-variation accommodation: The takabakari practice anticipates by centuries a principle that modern industrial design has had to relearn: people have different bodies, and equipment standardized for the average body fits poorly for many users. The disability-rights movement has documented this in modern terms — wheelchair design, prosthetics, hearing aids, eyeglasses, ergonomic furniture. The handshake reveals a pattern: cultures that take body-variation seriously develop adaptive equipment practices early; cultures that pursue standardization develop body-variation accommodations late and grudgingly, often only after political pressure from those harmed by the standardized fit. Classical Japanese stick-arts treated body-variation as the design problem from the start. Modern American industrial-design culture treats standardization as the default and accommodates variation only when forced. The handshake produces a vault-level finding: takabakari is one example of a broader principle — design for body-variation is older and more practical than design for the average user. The latter is the historical aberration, not the former. The classical craftsman who fitted a wooden tool to a specific hand was working in the older tradition. The factory that mass-produced standardized tools for "the average user" was the innovation, and its costs (poor fit for everyone outside the design center, accommodation only when demanded) were absorbed without recognition for most of the industrial era. Takabakari practice is one of many ancient examples that the recent industrial standardization is the historical exception, not the historical norm. Modern customization software and 3D-printed prosthetics are partial returns to the older practice.
The Sharpest Implication
If takabakari was the classical practice — body-calibrated weapons sized to the individual — then the modern standardization of training equipment may be sacrificing performance for production-efficiency. The dojo where everyone uses the same-length jo regardless of body type is producing technique that works in the average body and worse in any individual body. The chef-kit, the writer's keyboard, the surgeon's preferred instruments — anywhere a serious practitioner adapts tools to body, performance edges accumulate. The implication beyond budo: where you have control over your working tools, calibrate them to your body. Most professionals never do this, accepting whatever institutional defaults exist. The takabakari practice is a reminder that classical traditions were ahead of modern institutional defaults on this specific point — the practitioner's body is the operating substrate, and equipment that fits the substrate works better than equipment that fits the population average.
