Subodei was the most accomplished general in Mongol military history. He led every major Mongol campaign for forty years. He survived Khan (who died in 1227) and Ogodei (who died in 1241). At the 1235 khuriltai, he was probably sixty years old, blind in one eye, and so fat that he could no longer ride a horse and had to be hauled around in an iron chariot. He advocated for the European campaign. He led it. He produced the largest single Mongol-architectural achievement at continental distance from the home base.1
