What the Nipples Are For

Ask what nipples do and everyone gives the same answer: they feed infants.

Which is true of about half the population, for a few years, once or twice in a life. It leaves the other half unexplained, and it leaves most of the first half unexplained most of the time.

Odwirafo's position is that the standard answer has the priority backwards:

"The two nipples, the primary function is they are positive and negative ports, just like a nine-volt battery. Directly over the lungs, to stimulate the lungs. The secondary portion — which only takes place for a certain period within the life of a woman — then breastfeeding can occur."1

Reception is primary. Lactation is secondary and time-bounded.

The Argument From the Nose

The reasoning by which he gets there is better than the claim's reputation would suggest, and it's worth stating properly.

Take the nose. What is it for? Most people say smelling. But block your nose and you don't die of not smelling — you die of not breathing. The primary function is respiration; olfaction is the secondary one. Lose your sense of smell entirely and you continue; lose airflow and you have minutes.1

So the test he's applying is: which function, if it fails, is catastrophic? And on that test, the obvious answer about the nose is the wrong one.

Apply the same test to nipples and lactation fails it immediately. It's absent in half the population, absent for most of a life in the other half, and its absence is survivable. Whatever the primary function is, on this reasoning, it can't be that.

The logic is sound. What it delivers you to is an empty slot — there must be some other function — and the corpus fills it with energy reception.

The Ports

The filled-in account places nipples in a wider system.

The body, on this reading, has paired ports and single ports. Two eyes receiving light. Two ears receiving sound. Two nostrils receiving air and vibration. Two nipples receiving electromagnetic energy. And singly, the navel and the mouth.1

Each pair is a channel for a particular kind of incoming energy, and the nipples' placement is the argument: they sit directly over the lungs, and the lungs are where the ba — the solar fire — is drawn in and where blood is purified. Positive and negative terminals over the organ that does the vitalising.

Which is internally coherent. If your cosmology holds that solar energy is taken in through the chest and distributed via the blood, then two symmetrical points on the chest wall want an explanation, and terminals is the explanation the model produces.

Where the Physiology Doesn't Cooperate

The honest position, because the corpus asserts and doesn't argue.

Nipples in males are the standard textbook case of a developmental byproduct: they form before sexual differentiation, in a shared embryonic plan, and persist because there is no selective pressure to remove them. That account explains their presence, their position, their symmetry and their innervation without needing them to do anything.

It also explains something the corpus's account doesn't — why they are where they are. Symmetrical placement on the chest wall follows from the milk-line development pattern common to mammals. If they were reception ports positioned over the lungs, you'd want an account of why other mammals have them in rows down the abdomen.

That's a specific, answerable objection and it goes unaddressed.

And the argument the corpus attaches to the claim makes it worse. The nipple material is introduced as a rebuttal to people "talking about how men used to be women" — a swipe at accounts of embryonic development that the corpus treats as ideological. But the embryology it's dismissing is the same embryology that explains the anatomy it's trying to account for. The corpus needs the developmental account and is attacking it in the same breath.

Analytical Case Study — The Nails in the Nkisi

The same claim — that the body has stimulable points — extends to a second case, and this one has an object attached.

Kongo minkisi — the power-figures — are frequently driven full of nails, blades and screws, sometimes hundreds. They are among the most recognisable objects in African art and among the most misunderstood.

Odwirafo reads the nailing as point-stimulation: driving into specific locations on the figure's body to activate aspects of the spiritual anatomy tied to particular abosom. On this account, minkisi are an African acupuncture, and the practice predates the Chinese one.1

A caller extends it: African practitioners using porcupine quills, inserted at points "almost 100% identical to acupuncture."1

The standard reading of minkisi is different and better attested. The nails are generally understood as oath-sealing and case-marking — each one driven to activate the figure on behalf of a specific petition, to seal an agreement, or to record a grievance brought before it. The figure accumulates nails the way a docket accumulates entries. The location is not primarily anatomical; the act of driving is what matters.

🚩 SINGLE SOURCE on the acupuncture reading. And the quill claim, which is the more interesting of the two, comes from a caller with no citation — if documented African needle-therapy at specified points exists, it would be a genuine finding, and nothing in the range read supplies a reference.

The Sun on Your Skin

There's a version of the reception claim that needs no special anatomy at all, and the corpus states it in passing without noticing it's the strongest form available.

You do not only receive sunlight through your eyes. It lands on your skin, and something happens — the corpus's phrasing is that "the sun touches you and it fires you up."1

That is straightforwardly true and the mechanism is well documented. Ultraviolet on skin initiates vitamin D synthesis. Light on the retina entrains circadian rhythm, which sets hormone release across the whole system. Infrared warms tissue and alters peripheral circulation. The skin is genuinely an organ of solar reception, and the effects are systemic rather than local.

So the framework's general claim — the body takes in solar energy through its surface, and the intake changes internal state — is not a metaphysical proposition. It's physiology, and physiology this tradition arrived at by attending to what people actually feel in sunlight.

Which sharpens where the disagreement really is. Nobody needs to dispute solar reception. The dispute is over whether there are dedicated ports for it, positioned over specific organs, functioning as terminals. The general claim is well founded and the specific architecture is the addition — and the corpus spends its confidence on the addition rather than on the foundation.

Implementation Workflow

You've met a claim that a body part's accepted function is secondary.

Apply the failure test, because it's the good part of the argument. Which function, if lost, is catastrophic? That question really does reorder the nose, and it's a legitimate way to think about priority.

Then notice what the test actually delivers. It can show that the accepted answer is not primary. It cannot tell you what is — it leaves a slot, and the slot gets filled by whatever framework you brought.

Check whether a developmental account already fills it. Byproducts are extremely common, they explain presence without function, and any claim of a hidden primary function has to beat that explanation rather than ignore it.

And check the argument's opponent. Where a physiological claim is introduced to refute a position the speaker dislikes, the physiology is being recruited, and recruited physiology is worth checking twice.

What Survives

The framework claim survives even where the specific ones don't, and it's worth separating.

That the body is a system of energy-exchange sites — that there are locations where something enters, and that these can be stimulated — is not eccentric. It's the operating premise of acupuncture, of several bodywork traditions, and of the minkisi practice whatever the nails turn out to mean.

And the tradition's general instinct is sound: that the standard functional account of a body part is often the one that was easiest to notice rather than the one that matters most. The nose really is a good example.

What doesn't survive is the specific assignment. Nipples as electromagnetic terminals is asserted, contradicted by a better-supported developmental account, and defended by attacking that account.

The pattern is now familiar across this build: a defensible general principle, a specific claim that doesn't hold, and the specific one stated most forcefully.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Strongest evidence. The failure test is a genuinely useful heuristic and the nose case demonstrates it working.

Central tension: the developmental account. Male nipples as an embryological byproduct explains presence, position and symmetry, and the corpus attacks embryology while needing it.

A second tension. The minkisi reading runs against the established interpretation of a well-studied object class, on a single source.

A third. The port taxonomy is elegant and unfalsifiable as stated — any symmetrical feature can be read as a paired channel.

Open question, and it's checkable. Is there documented African needle or quill therapy applied at specified anatomical points, independent of Chinese transmission? The caller asserts it; the literature on African medical practice is substantial; nobody in the session asks for a source, and the answer would either produce a real finding or close the question.

Author Tensions & Convergences

The nose argument is the best thing here and it's genuinely his — a small, portable piece of reasoning that reorders an assumption most people have never examined.

Then it gets spent on a conclusion the reasoning doesn't reach, defended against an embryology the argument itself depends on, in a passage whose motivation is visibly a dislike of what other people are saying about sex and development.

Set against Odwirafo Source Tensions, this is the corpus's overreach in its motivated form — the same failure documented on the moor page, where the philology was shaped to disqualify a rival. Here the physiology is shaped to disqualify a position about gender. The tell is the same in both: the argument's target is people rather than a question, and the evidence bends toward the target.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

The Somatic-Psychological Circuit. That page documents the bidirectional traffic between bodily state and psychological state — interoceptive signal shaping affect, affect shaping autonomic tone, and the loop running continuously rather than in one direction.

Set beside the ports doctrine, the two agree on something real and disagree about what it licenses. Both hold that the body is continuously taking in and being altered by what it takes in. Both treat the chest specifically as a site where that traffic is dense — which is well supported, given cardiac and respiratory afferents.

The insight the pairing produces is about which version of the claim can be cashed. The somatic literature identifies real channels — vagal, interoceptive, respiratory — with measurable traffic and demonstrable effects on state. The ports doctrine posits a channel with no measurable traffic and infers it from anatomy. Where the tradition is pointing at something real, a mechanism already exists to describe it; where it posits a mechanism of its own, the anatomy it appeals to is better explained otherwise. That's not a dismissal of the tradition's attention — the chest genuinely is where a great deal happens — but it does locate the error precisely: not in noticing, in the accounting.

One handshake. The concept is a claim about energy-reception sites on the body; the physiology of bodily reception is its honest purchase.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The good argument and the bad conclusion are separable, and almost nobody separates them. The failure test genuinely does show that the accepted function of a body part may not be its most important one — that's portable and it's right. What it cannot do is specify the alternative, and here the slot gets filled by a claim that a well-supported developmental account already fills better, and then defended by attacking that account. The heuristic is worth keeping; the conclusion isn't.

Generative questions.

If the failure test is sound, what else does it reorder? Applied honestly across the body it would generate a list, and some of that list would be interesting rather than ideological.

Is there documented African point-therapy predating Chinese contact? That single question decides whether the minkisi reading is a finding or a projection.
