Try explaining a spirit to someone who has never thought about one.

You can't point at it. You can't hand them a photograph. Every word you reach for — energy, force, presence — is either vague or already loaded with somebody else's theology. Most attempts collapse into either poetry or jargon, and the listener nods and retains nothing.

Now try a different move. Ask them to picture a heart. Four chambers, valves between them, blood arriving spent through the veins on one side and leaving bright and oxygenated on the other. They can see it. Most people carry that diagram around from school.

Then say: there is a second heart, in the same place, doing the same job with a different substance. Not blood — the accumulated weight of everything that has happened to you. Arriving, being purified, going back out.

That lands. Instantly, and without a single new technical term.

That move — teach the physical organ first in clinical detail, then derive the spiritual organ from its structure — runs through all six sessions of this course. It's the engine. It's also the place where the whole method is most vulnerable, and both of those things are true at once.1

The Stated Principle

He doesn't leave it implicit. Week 1 states it as doctrine:

"The components of the spiritual being mirror the physical anatomy."1

Not resemble. Not are usefully compared to. Mirror — a correspondence claim, load-bearing, and the thing every subsequent derivation rests on.

The corollary follows immediately: if you want to know what a spiritual organ does, find out what the physical organ does. The physiology isn't illustration decorating a doctrine that was arrived at some other way. It's the route by which the doctrine is reached.

How the Move Actually Runs

The sequence is identical every time, which is part of what makes it recognisable as a method rather than a habit.

First, the physical organ gets described at length and with real specificity — not gestured at. The heart segment in Week 4 walks through the right and left atria, the right and left ventricles, the tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral and aortic valves, the septum, the pericardium, and the direction of flow through the pulmonary circuit before a single spiritual claim is made.2

Second, a structural feature gets isolated. The heart is a repository — a thing that receives, holds, and discharges.

Third, that feature is transposed into the spiritual register. The spiritual heart is a repository too, of the energetic weight of experience rather than of blood.

Fourth, the transposition is used to explain something the listener already recognises from their own life. A heavy heart. Being weighed down. Not being able to let something go.

Then the loop closes with a payoff: this is why the heart, and not any other organ, is the thing weighed against the feather.

A Catalogue of the Mirrors

Assembled across the six sessions, the correspondences run:

  • Heart — chambered repository, receiving and discharging → the ab, repository of the energetic weight of experience2
  • Lungs — gas exchange, and purification of blood returning spent → the ḥati, purifying accumulated emotional residue3
  • Pineal gland — light-sensitive, hormone-secreting, buried deep in the brain → the aku, the inner eye, illumination1
  • Brain, four lobes — cerebral cortex left and right, cerebellum left and right → the fourfold kra: nkra and nkrabea, she and shebia2
  • Endocardium and epicardium — inner and outer membranes of the heart → the Ba within, Nekhbet governing without1
  • Nipples — paired, positioned over the lungs → paired reception ports, described as the terminals of a nine-volt battery3
  • Earth's magnetosphere → the khaibit, the aura, as the body's own field
  • Earth's layered structure — inner core, mantles, crust, atmosphere, magnetosphere → the su at the centre with every other component arranged around it4

Read as a set, the ambition is clear. This isn't one analogy pressed into service repeatedly. It's a claim that the correspondence is systematic — that the body is a readable map of something that has no other map.

Why It Works as Teaching

Give this its due before taking it apart, because the pedagogical achievement is real and it's the reason the material travels.

A spiritual anatomy taught this way is learnable in an evening by someone with no prior vocabulary. It requires no faith commitment to follow the exposition. It gives a person a place to put a feeling — chest heaviness has an address, and the address has a name and a treatment.

It also does something subtler. It makes the tradition checkable in principle. If the spiritual mirrors the physical, then discoveries in physiology ought to keep landing on doctrines the tradition already holds. Odwirafo bets on exactly this when he sets the intrinsic cardiac nervous system — the "heart-brain" — beside a funerary text that calls the heart "a ka within my body."2 That's not a defensive move. It's a wager on future evidence, and traditions that make those can lose them.

Analytical Case Study — The Four Lobes and the Fourfold Soul

The case that shows both faces at once.

The kra is taught as having a fourfold internal division. Nkra and nkrabea — your divine function and the manner of executing it. She and shebia — the energetic capacity to carry it out, and the manner of wielding that capacity.

The physical anchor: "Just like your brain is divided into four major lobes — the cerebral cortex, right and left hemispheres, the cerebellum, right and left hemispheres." And then the functional mapping: the cortex gives you consciousness of what is happening, which maps to nkra and nkrabea; the cerebellum regulates motor movement, force, balance and equilibrium, which maps to she and shebia.2

Now look at what that argument is actually made of.

The functional half is not bad. The cerebellum genuinely is central to coordination, balance and motor control; the cortex genuinely is where conscious deliberation lives. Pairing knowing what to do with the cortex and being able to do it with the cerebellum is a reasonable structural intuition, and it isn't obviously reaching.

The numerical half does not survive contact. "Four major lobes" is not neuroanatomy — the cerebral cortex has four lobes per hemisphere (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital), and the cerebellum is a separate structure entirely, not a pair of lobes standing alongside them. The "four" that matches the fourfold kra has been produced by counting cortex-left, cortex-right, cerebellum-left, cerebellum-right, which is not how anyone divides a brain.

So the correspondence holds where it's about function and dissolves where it's about number — and the number is what made it feel like evidence.

Implementation Workflow

You're reading a passage that derives a spiritual claim from a physical organ, and you want to know how much weight it can bear.

Separate the two halves before you assess either. There's a physiological description and there's a transposition, and they fail in completely different ways. Conflating them is how a shaky claim borrows credibility from a solid one.

Check the physiology against a current source. Not to be pedantic — because the transposition inherits every error. If the organ doesn't work the way the passage says, the spiritual claim built on it is describing something that isn't there. Much of the physiology in this course is popular-science-level and some of it is dated.

Then find the joint. Which specific structural feature is being carried across? Repository. Paired. Deep inside. Purifies what returns to it. Name it in one word. If you can't, the transposition is running on atmosphere rather than structure, and that's worth noticing.

Now ask the question that does the real work: would a different organ have served just as well? The heart is a repository — but so is the liver, so is the spleen, so is fat tissue. If the argument is the heart is a repository, therefore the spiritual repository is the heart, it's under-determined, and the conclusion was chosen before the reasoning. If the argument turns on something only the heart does, it's doing better.

Finally, ask whether the claim is being offered as evidence or as illustration — and then check whether the passage treats it consistently as one or the other. This is where most of them come apart.

Where the Analogy Starts Doing the Arguing

Here is the objection that matters, and it isn't the physiology errors. Those are fixable. This one isn't.

The correspondence is asserted, never argued. The components of the spiritual being mirror the physical anatomy is stated as a premise in the opening minutes and never defended. But everything downstream depends on it, and it's the one claim that can't be established by the method itself — you cannot demonstrate that the spirit mirrors the body by pointing at more places where they seem to line up, because whether they line up is exactly what's in question.

And there's a deeper problem underneath. A structural analogy can be constructed between almost any two sufficiently complex systems. The body has enough organs, enough pairs, enough nested containers and enough flows that a determined reader can find a physical correlate for any spiritual claim they already hold. The method has no way of telling a discovered correspondence from a constructed one, because it has no failure condition. Nothing in six sessions is ever rejected on the grounds that the physiology didn't cooperate.

That's why the four-lobes case is worth dwelling on. The fourfold kra was not derived from the brain. It's an Akan doctrine with its own textual and ritual life, and the vault has pages on it that owe nothing to neuroanatomy. The brain was recruited afterwards to confirm it — and when the count didn't work, the count got adjusted rather than the doctrine. Which tells you the direction the reasoning was actually running.

The sharpest version of the problem is the inconsistency. The nipple argument in Week 5 needs the physiology to be literally true — those are reception ports, and that is their primary function.3 The four-lobes argument needs it to be merely structural — nobody thinks the kra is made of neurons. Both moves appear in the same course, and no principle is offered for which applies when. That is the load-bearing crack.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Strongest evidence for the method's value. The neurocardiology convergence is a genuine hit. A text calling the heart "a ka within my body" set beside the discovery of an intrinsic cardiac nervous system is the kind of thing a bet on future evidence is supposed to look like when it comes in. It doesn't establish the mirror principle — one confirmation never does — but it's not nothing, and it was predicted rather than retrofitted.

Tension one, preserved: evidence or illustration? [n≥3 PATTERN] — the corpus switches between the two registers without marking the switch, across the heart, the nipples, the brain, and the pineal. Nothing reconciles them.

Tension two: no failure condition. Across six sessions, the physiology never once disconfirms a doctrine. Either the correspondence is unusually good, or disconfirmations aren't being counted. The second is more likely and the corpus offers no way to tell.

Tension three, against the vault: Akan Cosmo-Physiology — Body Systems Mirror Cosmic Function already documents this correspondence running outward, body to cosmos. This course runs it inward, body to spirit. Whether that's one principle applied twice or two different claims sharing a shape is not addressed on either page.

Open question. Is there a single instance anywhere in the corpus where the physiology was allowed to correct a doctrine — where the anatomy said no and the teaching changed? A tradition that has never once been overruled by the evidence it claims to rest on is telling you something about how the evidence is being used.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Following Odwirafo through the heart segment is genuinely absorbing. He takes his time on the physiology — the valves, the septum, the direction of flow — and by the time the spiritual claim arrives you feel you've earned it. There's no hand-waving. You are being taught something real and then shown what it's for.

Then read the four lobes and the floor gives slightly. The same voice, the same certainty, the same pacing — and this time the anatomy has been quietly bent to hit a number the doctrine needed. Nothing in the delivery signals a change. The register that carried the good argument carries the bad one identically, which is precisely what makes it hard to catch in the moment.

Set beside Odwirafo Source Tensions, this is that page's diagnosis showing up in a new location. Not overstated etymology this time — overstated anatomy. The failure is not really about linguistics or biology. It's a single habit: arrive at the conclusion first, then recruit whichever discipline is nearest to confirm it, and never let the discipline object.

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Three Doṣas as Sacrificial Triad — Five Breaths and Ayurvedic Metabolism. Āyurveda performs the identical operation. Metabolic processes are mapped onto a sacrificial schema; the five breaths are located anatomically; the three doṣas are simultaneously physiological substances and cosmological principles. A tradition reading the body as a map of something larger, and using the body's structure to derive the larger thing's structure.

What makes the pairing useful is that Āyurveda has been doing this for two millennia and its record is mixed in an instructive way. Where the correspondence tracked something real — the gut as central to systemic health, the somatic reality of what gets called doṣic imbalance — it generated durable and sometimes vindicated practice. Where it ran on the schema's own momentum, it generated confident and wrong anatomy that persisted precisely because the cosmology was too elegant to give up.

The insight neither produces alone: the physiological-mirror method's reliability tracks whether the correspondence was noticed or needed. Āyurveda's good results came from observations of the body that the schema then organised. Its bad ones came from places where the schema demanded a structure and the body was made to supply it. That's a usable test, and it's exactly the test that separates Odwirafo's heart-as-repository argument — a real structural feature, noticed — from his four-lobes argument, where a four was required and a four was produced.

Meaning and Physiology. The psychological literature establishes that meaning-states are not merely represented in the body but constituted through it — that construals move immune markers, cardiac variability, endocrine output. Meaning and physiology aren't two systems requiring a bridge; the bridge is the wrong image.

Held against the mirror method, that's a serious complication rather than a confirmation. Odwirafo's model needs two anatomies that correspond — a physical one and a spiritual one, mirroring each other. The psychology suggests something that would explain his best results without any second anatomy at all: grief really does settle in the chest, and unprocessed experience really does have cardiac consequences, because meaning is already physiological.

The insight the pairing produces is uncomfortable and worth stating: the mirror method's strongest cases are the ones a one-anatomy account explains equally well, and the cases requiring a genuine second anatomy are its weakest. Chest heaviness under grief needs no ḥati. The fourfold kra, which does need one, is where the physiology stopped cooperating. The method is most persuasive exactly where it's least necessary.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. The mirror method made this tradition teachable and gave it a diagnostic vocabulary that people can actually use — and it did so by borrowing the authority of a discipline it never permits to disagree with it. The physiology is treated as evidence when it confirms and as metaphor when it doesn't, and no principle governs the switch. Until one is stated, every physiological argument in the corpus has to be assessed individually, because the method itself provides no way to tell a good one from a bad one.

Generative questions.

If meaning is already physiological, what work is left for a second anatomy to do — and is the tradition's real contribution the map rather than the territory it claims to describe?
