At the end of a ninety-minute masterclass on the nine rasas, Prathamesh Krisang stops and says something that undercuts everything he's just spent ninety minutes doing: this isn't enough. Not because the material was thin — because no single teaching session, however good, was ever meant to be the whole of anyone's learning.1
He backs the claim with a śloka he cites from one of the subhāṣitas: learning happens in four proportions. A quarter from the teacher. A quarter from your peers. A quarter from your own intelligence. A quarter from the simple passage of time.2
A quarter from the ācārya. When Krisang is teaching — live, on a call, delivering the framework — he's supplying exactly one-fourth of what a student will actually walk away with. Not the whole thing. A quarter.3
A quarter from your peers. The people learning alongside you contribute an equal share — not a lesser, supplementary share, an equal one. This is the quarter most course design ignores entirely, treating fellow students as an audience for the teacher rather than a source of the learning itself.3
A quarter from your own intelligence. What you work out yourself — turning the material over, testing it against your own experience, catching the parts that don't fit — is a full quarter of the total. Krisang notes this dryly: "your own intelligence, which I assume you have."3 The formula assumes it, structurally, whether or not any individual session makes room for it.
A quarter from the passage of time. The last quarter isn't a person or an activity at all. It's duration. "Ninety minute is not enough. You need a passage of time to do that practice every single day... for 4 weeks is when you develop new neural networks in your brain so that it becomes natural."4 Understanding that arrives in week three, not in the room, is still doing a quarter of the work — it just does it slowly, off-stage, uncredited.
The formula isn't decoration on top of Krisang's teaching — it's the argument for how his own program is built. His four-week content-creation accelerator runs on exactly this ratio: a short daily video from him (the teacher's quarter), a live Saturday group call for question-and-answer (still the teacher's quarter, extended), and then — this is the part that makes the ratio real rather than aspirational — every student is paired with a new "brainstorming buddy" each week, a different person from the batch, for a dedicated thirty-minute call.5 New pairing, new perspective, every single week. Krisang is explicit about why: "you can't create in isolation. You have to create with the tribe."6
You're building a learning program — a course, a cohort, a workshop series — and your instinct, like almost everyone's, is to ask: how do I make my teaching better? Sharper slides. Tighter delivery. A better hook in minute one.
Stop there and ask a different question instead: what have you built for the other three-quarters?
You look at your curriculum and count what's actually structured. If it's a video series with a comments section nobody reads, you have built for one quarter and left three to chance. So you build the second quarter deliberately — not "a community exists," but a specific, recurring, structured pairing: this week you talk to this person, not whoever happens to show up. You build the third quarter by leaving room in the format for the student to be wrong before they're right — a worksheet with a blank the video doesn't fill in, a question your session doesn't answer. And you build the fourth quarter by refusing to compress the program into a single sitting, however good that sitting could be — you spread it across weeks, because the neural rewiring the material needs isn't something a better lecture can shortcut.
Ninety minutes of you, however excellent, was never going to be the whole of it. The other three-quarters have to be built, not assumed.
The śloka is cited by Krisang as coming from "one of the subhāṣitas" — a genre of classical Sanskrit didactic verse — without a specific text or verse citation given in the transcript; this claim is [PARAPHRASED] and unverified against a primary source. Krisang applies it as received wisdom explaining why the gurukula model was structured the way it was, without further textual argument.
Tension: the formula presents the four quarters as roughly equal shares, but Krisang's own program design gives the teacher's quarter disproportionate scaffolding — daily videos, a live call, the entire curricular sequence — while the "own intelligence" quarter gets no dedicated structure at all beyond the assumption that it will happen. Whether a program can be built that scaffolds all four quarters with real parity, rather than three deliberately and one by default, is untested here.
Open question: does the formula's ratio hold for solitary, high-stakes skills — surgery, structural design — where "your own intelligence" working things out unsupervised carries real risk, or is it specific to low-stakes creative and expressive skills where a wrong turn costs only time?
This page has no sibling voice inside the vault teaching the same śloka — it stands alone as a single-source claim. What it does converge with, structurally rather than textually, is Krisang's broader claim across this hub that real learning requires action and duration, not just transmission: see Kriyā as the Only Path to Gyāna. That page argues knowledge is produced by acting, not by receiving instruction. This page names the container that acting happens inside — a structure with four legitimate inputs, of which the teacher supplies only one. Read together, they make the same argument from two directions: Krisang's account of learning distrusts any model where the teacher is imagined as the sole or even primary source, whether the alternative source is one's own action or one's own intelligence, peers, or time.
Psychology — Self-Control and Commitment Devices. This page's second category of commitment device — "social and reputational commitments," including the named example of an accountability partner — describes exactly the mechanism Krisang builds into his peer quarter: a specific person, checking specific progress, creating a social cost to disappearing.7 The handshake sharpens both pages. The commitment-devices page treats the accountability partner as a tool for binding your future self against your own temptation to quit; Krisang's rotating-weekly-buddy design adds something that page doesn't consider — the partner itself rotates, so the social bond never has time to calcify into either comfortable slack (the same partner learns to let things slide) or burnout (the same partner absorbs the same person's excuses every week). A fresh accountability relationship every seven days may be a stronger commitment device than a fixed one, precisely because familiarity is what erodes an accountability partner's willingness to hold the line.
Business — Gymnasium-Agōgē Education. Set aside that page's coercive Spartan material entirely — the relevant convergence is narrower and specific: its central claim that education should be "formation, not information," that a program should ask "what has the student become?" rather than "what did the student hear?" The fourfold formula is a numerical version of the identical claim. If only one quarter of learning comes from the teacher's information-transmission, then a program built entirely around improving the transmission — better slides, better delivery, more content — is optimizing 25% of the actual mechanism and ignoring the other 75%. What the handshake produces: "formation over information" isn't just a philosophical stance, it has an implied ratio, and the ratio says most learning programs are pouring nearly all their design effort into the smallest of the four quarters.
Sharpest implication. If the formula is even roughly right, most paid education products — courses, masterclasses, cohort programs — are over-engineered on exactly the quarter that matters least and under-engineered on the three that matter most. A better video is a 25%-ceiling improvement. A better peer-pairing structure, a better scaffold for the student's own reasoning, and a longer runway for the material to actually land are each, individually, worth as much.
