The strangest thing about this material is that it sits in an appendix, and the strangeness is admitted on the spot.
The name cosmic consciousness sounds really important, and if they are, they should be somewhere on the main part — then why aren't they there? The question even baffles me, who wrote it in the first place.1
Then the reason: their scope runs beyond what is being taught here, and belongs to more advanced topics and instructions. They are not part of the core of something intended to help Apprentices follow a simple path into the higher levels of magical practice. And then the reason they are included anyway, which is a memory. I remember when I was a young man, I didn't even know how to cast a spell when my Mentor taught me about these awesome and majestic forces of the universe. The mentor's position: a cosmic consciousness is a power so vast and incomprehensible that Wizards should begin to familiarize with them since their very first class.
Too advanced for the volume, and taught to a student who could not yet cast anything. Both at once, deliberately.
The definition is precise and it excludes almost every category the rest of the practice uses. Cosmic Consciousnesses are entities which exist outside any hierarchy of beings, because they are the personification of mighty philosophical concepts. In essence they are powerful intellectual constructs which exist to manifest their being into the whole of the universe.
Outside any hierarchy. Not archangels, not Archprimes, not deities, not elementals, not familiars. Everything else in this system has a rank; these have none.
And their reach follows from that. They are present in every aspect of the universe, in every manner of entity and in every manner of created thing — related to everything and anything, with essences running from the highest of philosophical layers down to the densest concepts in manifestation. ⚠ And the disclaimer: although these consciousnesses might seem divine, they are not. They are superior essences, better described as aspects of the Source Divine rather than individual deities.
The mentor's worked example is the sharpest logical move in the entire curriculum, and it takes two sentences. The cosmic consciousness of Light is present from the very beginning of creation, and present in every concept and being which exhibits light. So far, unremarkable.
Then: even in those which lack light, because they are its opposite — and since they are everything, they also encompass those things which oppose them. Read that carefully. If a consciousness is everything of its kind, then its opposite is defined by reference to it, and a definition by reference is a form of containment. Darkness is inside Light, because darkness is what light's absence is called, and nothing can be the absence of something it has no relation to.
That is a real argument rather than a poetic flourish, and it does something the rest of this material never manages. Everywhere else, opposites are paired and left facing each other — Additus and Nihilus, the positive and negative columns of every planet, the straight and reversed runes. Here one member of the pair swallows the other, and the mechanism given is that being everything leaves nothing outside to oppose you from.
The practice attached is the smallest here, and it arrives as a personal memory rather than as an instruction. Back when I was a young man I didn't know much about these awesome forces, but I did what my Mentor told me to do. And what that was: I chose several of these consciousnesses and began pondering about their work, activities, associated entities and their attributes.
Choose several. Ponder four things about each — what they do, what they are active in, who is associated with them, what their attributes are. Then the result, and it is a change in behaviour rather than a power. The more I thought about them and how they related to the world around me, I found myself drawn to behave, deal and conduct myself in ways very similar to what they proposed.
And the conclusion drawn from it: sometime later I understood that this practice had kept me in the right track, away from evil and malice. So the technique is contemplation, and its stated effect is conduct. You think about Justice long enough and you start behaving like it — which makes this the only practice in the material whose output is the practitioner's character rather than an operation on the world.
The appendix gives each consciousness a name and a portfolio, and one worked entry shows the format. Joser Abagios is the cosmic consciousness of Justice, trials, judges, lawyers and courts. It operates looking for the broad application of Justice at all levels of creation. Then a qualification: it is justice with mercy. It works to make things right in every situation, and it is known as The Great Balancing Mind.
Then the associations: the intelligences of Jupiter and Saturn, the Potentates, the Aeons, the Authorities of light. Four elements in one entry — a domain, a mode of operation, an epithet, and a list of associated beings. Which is exactly the four things the practice asks you to ponder: work, activities, associated entities, attributes.
⚠ Counted against the converted file, the appendix carries forty-nine named entries, forty-eight of which use the phrase is the cosmic consciousness of. This build's working notes carried a figure of fifty-five; the count is reported as run.
🚩 The names are worth looking at as a set, because they are unlike anything else in this material.
Joser Abagios. Achidos Bolba. Merios Kassus. Tamanasanadas. Ribo Geseron. Baria Paravos. Estalton Regussi. Saras Kenasi. Ido Aunanu. Dhavis Devidorama. Aosdha Noloa. Votak Kou Yaga. Caniau Felroma. Sabal Seiernassi. Raba Badaracu. Darbasul Basileos. Ferlagas Bein. Amasha Amautu. Tageli Vira.
Almost all are two-word compounds, and none is traceable. The archangels elsewhere in this system are real and checkable — Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Metatron, Raziel. These are not, and they do not follow the naming rule the system states for celestials either, where a name should be a verb plus a divine marker.
One partial exception: Darbasul Basileos ends in a genuine Greek word — basileus, king. And Votak Kou Yaga has a rhythm unlike the rest.
The framing is what makes this material interesting rather than merely obscure, and it is stated three separate ways. Beyond the scope of the volume. A subject of more advanced topics and instructions. And yet given to an apprentice who didn't even know how to cast a spell, on the reasoning that a power so vast and incomprehensible is exactly what a beginner should start becoming familiar with.
That is the opposite of how every other thing in this curriculum is gated. The icosahedron is withheld until later. The one-word incantations need power the apprentice does not have. Familiars, angels and elementals are explicitly out of reach. Spell levels are capped at two.
These are handed over on day one, precisely because they cannot be used. There is nothing to perform, nothing to acquire, nothing that could go wrong — only something to think about, and the thinking is the whole of it.
The entire practice, as the mentor gave it. Read the appendix and choose several. Not all forty-nine. Several — the number is left to you, and the choosing is the first act.
For each one, ponder four things. Its work. Its activities. Its associated entities. Its attributes. The entries supply all four, which is why the format is what it is.
Then relate them to the world around you. The stated mechanism is not visualisation or invocation but noticing how the consciousness shows up in what you meet. And expect the effect to appear in your conduct. You are not casting anything. What the practice produced, on the one report given, was finding oneself drawn to behave, deal and conduct oneself in ways very similar to what they proposed — and staying, over years, on the right track and away from evil and malice.
The definition, the Light argument and the contemplation practice are asserted with no tradition named. This is the Eldest Tradition warrant on the source stub. 🚩 SINGLE SOURCE.
⚠ Forty-nine named entries counted, against a figure of fifty-five carried in this build's working notes. Reported as counted; re-check the plate. 🚩 None of the names is traceable. They follow neither the standard angelic rosters nor this system's own stated rule for celestial names. Basileos in one compound is genuine Greek for king.
⚠ The claim that these beings exist outside any hierarchy of beings sits against the Universal Consciousnesses described in the gemstone chapter, which are placed farther than the gods themselves — that is, at the top of a hierarchy rather than outside one. Whether the two are the same population is never stated. Unresolved: nothing says how many to choose, how long to ponder, or how a practitioner would know a consciousness had begun to shape their conduct.
Follow the framing and this is advanced material. Beyond the volume's scope, belonging to more advanced topics, printed in an appendix because it does not fit the core path. Follow the practice and it is the most elementary thing in the volume. Choose a few, think about them, notice how they show up around you. No formula, no object, no schedule, no risk — and it was taught to a student who could not yet cast a spell.
Both are stated on the same page, by the same voice, one after the other. And the resolution offered is the mentor's: a power too vast to use is exactly what a beginner should spend years getting used to.
The Fourfold Learning Formula — Gurukula Quarters — Both traditions hold that a substantial share of learning is not delivered by teaching at all, and both make room for it explicitly rather than treating it as leftover. The gurukula formula gives a quarter to the simple passage of time — a share that no instruction, peer or effort supplies, and that accrues by waiting while the rest settles.
Here that quarter is given a curriculum, and neither corpus notices what that provides. The cosmic consciousnesses are handed to a beginner precisely because they cannot be used: there is nothing to do with them but ponder, for years, while everything else is learned. So the material fills the waiting with something. A formula that names time as a quarter of learning still leaves the student idle in it; this one gives them forty-nine subjects to turn over during exactly that period, and reports the result as a change in character rather than in capability.
Sharpest implication. The one practice in this whole curriculum with no procedure, no object and no schedule is also the only one whose stated output is who you become. I found myself drawn to behave, deal and conduct myself in ways very similar to what they proposed — and the conclusion drawn was that it kept me in the right track, away from evil and malice.
Generative questions.
