The Remedy Is the Cause of the Disease

Gracián, Twice in One Law

Law 36 carries two Gracián placements — the Authority at the chapter's close, and this full marginal set beside the Keys:

As some make gossip out of everything, so others make much ado about everything. They are always talking big, [and] take everything seriously, making a quarrel and a mystery of it. You should take very few grievances to heart, for to do so is to give yourself groundless worry. It is a topsyturvy way of behaving to take to heart cares which you ought to throw over your shoulder. Many things which seemed important turn out to be of no account when they are ignored; and others, which seem trifling, appear formidable when you pay attention to them. Things can easily be settled at the outset, but not so later on. In many cases, the remedy itself is the cause of the disease: to let things be is not the least satisfactory of life's rules.1

And the Authority:

Know how to play the card of contempt. It is the most politic kind of revenge. For there are many of whom we should have known nothing if their distinguished opponents had taken no notice of them. There is no revenge like oblivion, for it is the entombment of the unworthy in the dust of their own nothingness.2

The Marginal Contains a Contradiction the Chapter Inherits

Read the two central sentences together:

A. Many things which seemed important turn out to be of no account when they are ignored; and others, which seem trifling, appear formidable when you pay attention to them. B. Things can easily be settled at the outset, but not so later on.

A says ignore and B says act early. They are both true and they recommend opposite behaviour at the same moment — the outset — which is precisely when you cannot yet tell which kind of thing you have.

Gracián prints them consecutively and does not notice. So does Greene, whose Reversal reproduces the same pair: most small troubles will vanish… but some will grow and fester unless you attend to them.

⚠ Which means the law's central unresolved problem is inherited, not invented. The corpus has recorded four consecutive laws ending on learn to distinguish with no method attached; this marginal shows the gap is at least three hundred and fifty years old and belongs to the source Greene is drawing from.

The One Sentence That Is Not About Judgement

In many cases, the remedy itself is the cause of the disease.

This is the sentence Greene's Tiny Wound image is built from, and it is doing something the rest of the paragraph does not.

Every other clause asks you to assess: is this important, is it trifling, is it early enough. ⚠ This one makes a claim that requires no assessment — there is a class of problem for which intervention is the mechanism of harm, and for that class the question of magnitude does not arise.

A Test That Requires No Judgement of Magnitude

Which is a better foundation than the rest of the passage, because it is checkable in a way is this important is not: ask whether the damage you are worried about could occur without your response. The Plumbers could not. The scattered peas could not. Villa's popularity could not.

Gracián supplies both the chapter's unresolved judgement problem and its one non-judgemental test, in the same paragraph.

Analytical Case Study: The Authority Is About Reputation, Not Peace

There are many of whom we should have known nothing if their distinguished opponents had taken no notice of them.

⚠ Note what this is not about. It is not about your peace of mind, your dignity, or avoiding entanglement. It is a claim about how obscure people become known, and the mechanism is that a distinguished person's attention is a publication event.

Being Answered Is a Credential

The asymmetry is the point. The obscure party gains everything from the exchange and the distinguished party gains nothing, because the exchange itself is the prize — being answered by someone of standing is a credential that cannot be self-issued.

There is no revenge like oblivion, for it is the entombment of the unworthy in the dust of their own nothingness.

⚠ 🚩 And the register here is worth marking. This is not restraint; it is a described pleasure. Gracián frames non-response as revenge, and the corpus should note that Law 36's Authority recommends silence as a way of inflicting something, which sits oddly beside the chapter's repeated claim that the technique removes you from the interaction. You cannot be simultaneously disengaged and taking revenge.

🚩 Document, Don't Endorse

⚠ 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY, twice — both Gracián placements are given with life dates and nothing else. No work, no maxim number, no translator. Both passages read as Oráculo Manual y Arte de Prudencia, which is conventionally cited by numbered maxim; the corpus should not guess the numbers.

🚩 The marginal contains an editorial insertion"[and]" — indicating the quoted text has been adjusted, and the source does not say by whom or from what.

🚩 Gracián's total across the build is now seven-plus appearances and he is never named as an influence in Greene's own text. Laws 33 and 34 took their titles from his Authorities; Law 34 and Law 36 each carry two separate Gracián placements. ⚠ This is the most load-bearing single voice in the stretch and it appears only in the margins.

🚩 CONSENSUS MISREPRESENTATION risk in the Italian-proverb pattern across this law: Gracián, Schopenhauer's chi non stima vien stimato, and five fables from unrelated traditions all argue the same point, which reads as cross-cultural corroboration. ⚠ Two of the seven descend from La Fontaine, and Schopenhauer's is a proverb rather than a finding. The range is narrower than it appears.

Implementation Workflow

Something has happened and you are deciding whether to take it up.

Run the remedy test first, because it needs no judgement about importance. ⚠ Ask: could the harm I am worried about happen without my response? If the honest answer is no — if the damage requires your intervention to exist — the decision is made and you do not need to assess magnitude at all. This handles the majority of cases and is the only part of Gracián's paragraph that does not require you to already know the answer.

Only then ask the harder question, and know that Gracián could not answer it either. Things can easily be settled at the outset and many things turn out to be of no account when ignored are both true, and the outset is exactly when they conflict. ⚠ The corpus's best available discriminator is elsewhere — what is it attached to — not in this passage.

And separate the reputational calculation out. The Authority's point is narrow and useful on its own terms: if you are the more prominent party, answering is publication. ⚠ That is true regardless of whether the underlying matter is important, and it is frequently the whole of the decision.

Do not take the revenge framing. Entombment in the dust of their own nothingness is a mood, not a method — and a person enjoying their silence is engaged, which is the state the technique exists to avoid.

Evidence, Tensions, Open Questions

Strongest evidence. A single paragraph containing both the law's central mechanism (the remedy itself is the cause of the disease) and an explicit statement of the asymmetry that makes non-response valuable to the prominent party.

Tension — the marginal's two central sentences recommend opposite behaviour at the same moment, and Greene's Reversal reproduces the pair unchanged.

Tension — the Authority frames silence as revenge, which requires engagement, in a law arguing for disengagement.

Tension — the law's cross-cultural corroboration is narrower than its seven voices suggest.

🚩 [POPULAR SOURCE] for the framing · 🚩 SECONDARY WITHOUT PRIMARY, twice — no work, maxim number or translator for either Gracián placement, and an unattributed editorial insertion in the quoted text.

Open questions. Is the remedy is the cause of the disease Gracián's own or a medical commonplace of his period? The phrasing has the shape of a proverb, and the build has already found one case (Kenkō's they say) where a maxim quoted inside a source was read as the source's claim. ⚠ Unresolvable without the Oráculo and a translator.

Author Tensions & Convergences

Gracián's seven-plus appearances make him the most load-bearing single voice across Laws 28–36, and he is present only in margins and Authorities. ⚠ Laws 33 and 34 lifted their titles from him; Laws 34 and 36 carry two separate placements each. Greene never names him as an influence in his own prose.

Against the Reversal the relationship is direct and unflattering to the chapter. ⚠ The Reversal restates Gracián's contradiction in Greene's own words — most troubles vanish, some fester — and then supplies what Gracián did not: a case, an instruction, and a monitoring discipline. On this one point the chapter improves on its source.

Against Schopenhauer's marginal in the same law, the two are usually read as agreeing and they do not. ⚠ Schopenhauer's subject is friends and his method is rationed warmth. Gracián's subject is opponents and his method is total non-acknowledgement. Law 36 places them together as though disdain were one thing, and the corpus should record that the chapter's marginal apparatus covers at least three distinct practices — rationed regard, refused acknowledgement, and unopened classification (the prodigy ox).

Cross-Domain Handshakes

Medicine — the intervention with its own morbidity. The Doctor–Patient Feedback Protocol treats the delivery of an assessment as an act with its own effects, distinct from the accuracy of the assessment, and holds that the act can worsen the condition it names.

The remedy itself is the cause of the disease is that principle stated four centuries earlier.

The insight neither produces alone: Gracián's line reads as a paradox or a warning about zeal. The clinical frame makes it a class distinction with a test: there are conditions where intervention carries risk that must be weighed against the condition, and conditions where the intervention is the only pathway by which the feared harm can occur. ⚠ The second class is small, identifiable and mishandled constantly, because the impulse to act is strongest exactly when the harm is imaginary — an unaddressed worry has no ceiling and an addressed one becomes a real event with real consequences. Which gives the practical form of the test: name the specific mechanism by which the harm reaches you if you do nothing. If you cannot name one, the worry has no pathway and your response would be supplying it.

Reputation systems — the answer that is a citation. Asymmetric Reputation Warfare holds that reputational exchanges are governed by who sets the terms and who gains standing from the exchange existing at all.

There are many of whom we should have known nothing if their distinguished opponents had taken no notice of them.

What the pairing produces: the standard reputational advice is about content — respond well, correct the record, control the narrative. Gracián's observation is about existence: the exchange itself transfers standing regardless of who wins it, because being answered by a prominent party is a credential the obscure party could not otherwise obtain. ⚠ Which inverts the usual calculation in a way that is easy to state and hard to follow: the better your rebuttal, the more valuable the citation you have issued. A devastating reply is a more prominent reply. So the prominent party's decision is not can I win this — they usually can — but is there any outcome in which the exchange does not benefit them more than me? For a sufficiently asymmetric pairing the answer is no, and that is knowable before reading the attack.

The Live Edge

Sharpest implication. Gracián prints the chapter's unresolved problem and its one solvable test in the same paragraph. ⚠ The problem: many things turn out to be of no account when ignored and things can easily be settled at the outset recommend opposite action at the same moment — and Greene's Reversal reproduces the pair unchanged, which means the law's central gap is three hundred and fifty years old and inherited. The test: the remedy itself is the cause of the disease requires no judgement about magnitude — name the mechanism by which the harm reaches you if you do nothing, and if you cannot, your response would be supplying it.

Generative questions.

  • The better your rebuttal, the more valuable the citation you have issued. For a sufficiently asymmetric pairing there is no winning outcome — and that is knowable before reading the attack. Is prominence alone sufficient to decide?
  • The Authority frames silence as revengeentombment in the dust of their own nothingness. A person enjoying their silence is engaged. Does the chapter's own Authority describe the state its technique exists to avoid?
  • Gracián is at seven-plus appearances, supplies two law titles, carries two placements in each of two laws, and is never named as an influence. At what point is the marginal apparatus the book's actual argument?
