There is no possible reversal to this Law.1
⚠ Six words. No case, no boundary, no condition, no hedge.
⚠ Every other law in the build closes with a limit — a scope condition, a counter-case, a technique for when the law fails. ⚠ This one closes with a claim that no limit exists.
⚠ And the corpus should record what that is, structurally: a law with no stated boundary is not a stronger law. It is an unfalsifiable one — and unfalsifiability is a property of the presentation rather than of the technique.
⚠ The corpus's shape tally records a refusal Reversal at Laws 35 and 37, and this is the third instance.
⚠ The earlier two decline to supply a counter-case. ⚠ This one declines to admit that one could exist — which is a different and larger claim.

The Keys: "A great cause may capture minds, but once the first flush of excitement is over, interest will flag—unless there is something to be gained. Self-interest is the solider foundation."2
⚠ That is a scope condition with a timescale. Hearts-and-minds work has a decay curve, and the passage names the point at which it expires.
⚠ A Reversal reading this law holds until the enthusiasm fades, after which nothing but interest sustains it would have been accurate, useful, and copied verbatim from the author's own Keys.
⚠ Instead the chapter denies that any such point exists, thirty lines after describing it.
⚠ The self-interest paragraph is not the only one.
The Observance's own premise is a limit. ⚠ The wise man's argument is that Liang cannot stay — "as soon as he headed north again to deal with Wei, Menghuo would reinvade." Winning hearts is the technique of the operator who must leave. ⚠ Where you can garrison the position, force is cheaper and the chapter's advice is optional.
And the Aesop marginal implies a third. ⚠ The wind failed because it "got tired of it" — a stamina failure, not a category error. Force that is sufficient does not fund its own opposition.
⚠ So Law 43 contains at least three statements of its own boundary — a decay curve, an occupation condition, and a sufficiency condition — and closes by denying that boundaries exist.
⚠ The corpus should record this as the strongest instance in the build of a law's limits being present in its own text and disclaimed in its own Reversal.

A Reversal is where a reader learns when not to. ⚠ It is the only section of the chapter format that protects against misapplication, and it is the section a reader in difficulty would turn to.
⚠ Its removal has a specific effect on the chapter's most dangerous material. Push people to despair, then give them relief is offered with no condition attached. ⚠ Even if your suffering is symbolic or minor and theirs is real is offered with no condition attached. The Reversal is where do not do this when would have gone.
🚩 ⚠ And the denial is inconsistent with the book's own form. Forty-two preceding chapters have Reversals, several of which supply the conditions that make their laws usable — Law 41's talent gate, Law 42's superiority condition. ⚠ The format is not decorative and the chapter has opted out of it.
⚠ It is worth asking why this is the law the author declines to bound, because the answer is legible in the chapter.
Law 43's Judgment is essentially a moral proposition: ⚠ ignore the hearts and minds of others and they will grow to hate you. Stated at that altitude it genuinely has no exceptions — nobody benefits from being disliked by everyone.
⚠ But the Keys are not operating at that altitude. They describe jolts, despair-relief cycles, fabricated stories about a general's wife, symbolic sacrifices, and "more leeway to deceive them later on."
⚠ And those have obvious limits. ⚠ The unfalsifiable claim belongs to the Judgment and is being extended to cover the toolkit — which is the same manoeuvre the corpus recorded on the law page: the Judgment is the chapter's public account and the Keys are its operating instruction.
⚠ The Reversal is where the two would have had to be distinguished. Writing one would have required stating which of the chapter's claims was being bounded — ⚠ and the answer, on the chapter's own evidence, is that the moral proposition is unbounded and the techniques are not.
⚠ The corpus should record the general form as a reading rule for this book: where a Reversal is missing, check whether the chapter has been operating at two altitudes. A limit cannot be written for a claim that has not been made precise.
Supply the missing Reversal from the chapter's own text. ⚠ Three limits are printed in Law 43 and none is filed as one. Hearts-and-minds work decays when the excitement fades unless a stake replaces it; it is the technique of the operator who cannot stay; and it is unnecessary where force would be sufficient. Those are usable, and they are Greene's.
Distinguish the moral claim from the techniques before applying either. ⚠ Attend to people or they will come to hate you has no exceptions and requires no technique. Push them to despair and then relieve it has many, and the chapter has not stated any.
Treat an unbounded law as a warning about the writing, not a property of the world. ⚠ Every technique has conditions. A text that declines to give them has either not identified them or has decided not to — and in this case the corpus can show they were identified, because they are printed thirty lines earlier.
⚠ And when a source refuses to bound a claim, go and find the boundary yourself before acting on it. The absence of a stated limit is the point at which a reader's own work has to begin — ⚠ and the cheapest place to look is the same chapter, because the material that would have gone in the Reversal is usually somewhere in the Keys.

Open questions. ⚠ Is the Judgment actually unbounded? The corpus can show the limits were available and cannot show why they were not used, and should not speculate further.

⚠ Against Law 42's Reversal: that chapter supplied a scope condition that failed on its own example, and this one supplies none at all. ⚠ The corpus should note which is worse for a reader: a bad limit can be tested and corrected; an absent one cannot be noticed.
Psychology — the institution that sells the cure for a condition it produces. The Certainty-Seeking Anxiety Cycle describes a closed loop: you are anxious because you are uncertain, the institution offers certainty as the cure, and the institution manufactures the certainty-seeking in the first place — the more you grip certainty, the more fragile it becomes, the more anxious you become, and the release the cycle would require is the one thing the institution cannot supply without undermining itself.
There is no possible reversal to this Law.
The insight neither produces alone: ⚠ the missing Reversal reads as an oversight and the certainty frame identifies it as a product feature. A book of laws sells the same good the cycle describes — a bounded, orderable account of a domain that is not bounded or orderable — ⚠ and a Reversal is precisely where that promise is qualified. Forty-two of them qualify it; this one does not, and the effect on the reader is a small increase in the feeling the book exists to supply. ⚠ Which is not a claim about the author's intention and the corpus should not make one. It is a claim about what the absence does: unqualified laws are more satisfying to hold, and the satisfaction is the thing being purchased. ⚠ The practical form is a reading discipline rather than a criticism — notice when a source's confidence is doing work its evidence is not, and treat the absence of a stated limit as the exact point where your own judgement is being asked to do more, not less.
Business — the doubt that was probably correct. Duveen and the Dürer Doubt opens at a New York party: a dealer has just sold a tycoon a Dürer for a large sum, the painting is not yet hung, and the tycoon's daughter shows it to a confident young French critic in order to impress him. The critic doubts it — and the page's title concedes he was probably right.
There is no possible reversal to this Law.
What the pairing produces: ⚠ the Duveen case is about what happens to a confidently stated doubt in a room organised around a confident assertion, and it supplies the reason unqualified claims outperform qualified ones socially even when they are worse. ⚠ A hedge invites the listener to supply the missing case; an absolute does not, and most listeners will not do unprompted work. ⚠ Which explains the register the corpus has been logging across Laws 39–43 — inevitable, never changes, no possible reversal — without needing to attribute anything to the author. Absolutes are load-bearing in transmission: they survive summary, they quote well, and they are what gets repeated. ⚠ The corpus should record the consequence for its own practice, which is the reason this page exists: the sentences most worth checking are the ones that arrived already certain, because certainty is the property that got them to you.
