Kapila is explaining to his mother how the world came out of the unmanifest, and very early in the sequence something divides:
This led to the three kinds of ahamkara that have the capacity to perform action. Vaikarika, taijasa and tamasa were created and so were the mind, the senses and the mahabhutas.1
Three kinds of I.
Not one ego with three functions. Three created things, listed as products, and from them the mind, the senses and the gross elements follow. The sense of being a self is not a late arrival that shows up once there are people — it is an early manufacturing stage, and the split happens before there is anything to be a self about.
Kapila states what the thing does:
The characteristics of ahamkara are being the doer, being the instrument and being the effect.1
Doer, instrument, effect. Three grammatical positions — the one who acts, the means, the outcome. And three kinds of ego, in the same breath.
The three are not variations. They have different outputs, and the outputs are the whole world in three pieces.
Taijasa — the fiery one — produces the equipment of knowing:
The modification of taijasa ahamkara created intelligence. This confers the ability to identify objects and facilitates the senses. The separate characteristics of intelligence are said to be doubt, misapprehension, right perception, memory and sleep. The senses are created from taijasa ahamkara and are classified into organs.1
Tāmasa — the dark one — produces the world to be known:
Tamasa ahamkara was transformed. This led to the tanmatra known as sound and then to the element of space.2
And from space the whole elemental chain: air, fire, water, earth.
Vaikārika produces the mind and, elsewhere in the volume's own summary, is named as the fifth creation from which the mind evolved.3
So: one kind of I makes the instruments of perception, another makes the objects of perception, a third makes the mind that runs between them. The subject-object split is not something the ego encounters. It is something the ego is manufactured as.
Look again at the list of intelligence's characteristics, because it is not what you would expect from a faculty of knowing:
Doubt, misapprehension, right perception, memory and sleep.1
Five items, and only one of them is knowing something correctly. There is uncertainty, there is being wrong, there is being right, there is having been right earlier, and there is being switched off.
Right perception is one entry among five. The faculty is defined by its full operating range, and most of that range is not success.
That is consistent with what the volume does elsewhere — perverse intelligence gets its own numbered slot in the nine creations, made before there is anything with a mind to be perverse.4 Here the same realism appears at the level of definition rather than sequence: the knowing faculty is specified inclusive of its failure modes, not as a clean instrument that sometimes malfunctions.
A simpler cosmology would have one ahaṃkāra producing everything. What does the threefold split buy?
The answer is that it explains a fit that would otherwise be a coincidence.
If the senses came from one source and the elements from an unrelated one, the fact that eyes happen to be receptive to exactly the property fire happens to have would be a remarkable accident, repeated five times. The scheme avoids this by deriving both sides from the same stage of the same process. Taijasa makes hearing; tāmasa makes sound; both are ahaṃkāra dividing.
So the threefold ego is a solution to the problem of why perception works at all. Subject and object are not two things that turned out to match. They are one thing that split, and the matching is a memory of the split.
Which also explains the ordering. Ahaṃkāra comes second in the volume's numbered creations, immediately after Mahat and before the subtle elements, the senses and the mind.3 It has to precede all three of them, because all three are its products.
Register: this reading is drawn from the derivations as stated at 3(26) and the ordering at 3(10). The text does not argue for the split or explain why three. What can be shown is which products come from which kind, and that the sense-side and object-side are given a common origin.
As with the elements, the account exists in two versions that are not quite the same.
At 3(26) the split is threefold and named — vaikārika, taijasa, tāmasa — with each producing a different class of thing.
At 3(10), in the numbered creations, ahaṃkāra appears as a single second creation "resulting from material objects, material knowledge and material action" — a triad again, but of causes rather than kinds — and vaikārika then reappears separately as the fifth creation, from which the mind evolves.3
So vaikārika is both one of three divisions of the second creation and a creation in its own right at position five. The two passages are reconcilable if the fifth creation is the vaikārika portion's later fruiting, and the text does not say so.
Neither passage cross-references the other. It is the volume's established behaviour, landing here on the structure of selfhood.
Worth naming a mismatch, because the English word carries freight the passage does not.
Ahaṃkāra here is a cosmological stage, not a personal defect. It is not vanity, not self-importance, not the thing a practitioner is exhorted to overcome. It is the operation by which undifferentiated stuff becomes a world with a knower and a known in it, and it is a prerequisite for there being any experience whatsoever.
The volume does elsewhere treat identification-with-the-body as a problem to be dissolved. But that is a use of ahaṃkāra, not ahaṃkāra itself, and Kapila's account is describing the manufacturing stage rather than issuing a warning about it. Read the passage as an attack on egotism and the whole derivation becomes unintelligible — you cannot be told to renounce the thing that made your senses.
One more oddity, small and worth keeping.
Sleep is a characteristic of intelligence, alongside doubt and memory. Not an absence of intelligence — a mode of it.
That is a substantive position. It means the faculty is understood to have a state in which it is operating without content, and that this state belongs to the faculty's definition rather than marking its suspension. A scheme that listed only doubt, misapprehension, right perception and memory would be describing a device that is either working or off. Including sleep makes it a device with an idle.
Whether the volume develops this anywhere is not established here. It is recorded because it is the kind of detail that a summary of the passage always drops, and it constrains what buddhi can mean.
You are stuck on an apparent mismatch between two things that ought to fit — a product and its market, a metric and the behaviour it is supposed to measure, a role and the person in it. Every fix you try adjusts one side to the other.
Kapila's move is worth borrowing: check whether the two sides came from the same place.
Where they did, the mismatch is a drift, and it is repairable by returning to the common origin and asking what both were expressing. The senses and the elements fit because they are one division seen twice; a metric and the behaviour usually fit at the point they were both derived from a single intention, and stop fitting later.
Where they did not, no amount of adjustment will produce a fit, because there was never a shared derivation to restore. A metric bought off the shelf and a behaviour that grew in your team have no common ancestor. You can bolt them together and they will keep coming apart, and the honest options are to replace one or to accept a permanent translation cost.
The diagnostic is genealogical rather than functional: not do these match but were these ever the same thing. That question is usually answerable from documents, and it decides whether you are doing repair or fabrication.
The strongest evidence that the threefold split is doing explanatory work rather than taxonomic decoration is that the sense-side and the object-side are derived from adjacent kinds of one thing. Taijasa makes hearing, tāmasa makes sound. The correspondence between perceiver and perceived is not asserted; it is produced.
Tension — vaikārika appears both as one of three kinds of ahaṃkāra at 3(26) and as an independent fifth creation at 3(10). Reconcilable, unreconciled, uncross-referenced. Preserved.
Open question. Intelligence is characterised by doubt, misapprehension, right perception, memory and sleep. Is that list meant as exhaustive, and does the volume ever use it — or is it, like several enumerations here, stated once and never operated?
This vault's Sāṅkhya material gives the threefold ahaṃkāra as standard, and the association of taijasa with the senses and tāmasa with the elements is the usual assignment. Nothing in Kapila's derivation is heterodox.
What is distinctive is the setting. This is not a treatise; it is a son explaining the structure of reality to his mother, at her request, in a narrative. And the same discourse that gives this careful, functional account of how selfhood is manufactured also contains the volume's harshest statement about women.
The juxtaposition is not resolved and this page does not attempt it. It is worth marking only because the discourse is usually cited for one or the other and rarely for both, and the two sit within a few chapters of each other in the same speech to the same listener.
With Ego Development Theory Framework. That page works a stage model in which the sense of self elaborates over a lifetime — earlier stages fused and undifferentiated, later ones capable of holding the self as an object among others, with each stage transcending and including its predecessors.
Kapila's account has the same architecture and runs it at a different scale. Ahaṃkāra divides, its divisions produce the knower and the known, and everything downstream carries the division forward.
What the pairing produces: the developmental model is about a self becoming able to see the subject-object distinction — the achievement is perspectival, and the distinction itself is treated as a given feature of reality that the maturing person becomes competent at handling. Kapila puts the distinction on the manufacturing side: it is not a fact the self grows into recognising, it is a product of the same stage that produced the self. Which relocates what the developmental achievement can be. If subject and object are jointly manufactured, then no stage of development reaches a position outside the split, because any position capable of looking is on one side of it. What later stages get is not exit but provenance — knowing where the split came from while remaining inside it. That is a smaller claim than transcendence and a more defensible one, and it explains a pattern the stage models describe without accounting for: why the most developed subjects report the distinction as constructed and go on using it exactly as before.
Sharpest implication. If perceiver and perceived are two branches of one division, then the fit between mind and world needs no explanation and deserves no wonder — it is not a correspondence achieved but a seam remembered. And nothing downstream of that division can get behind it, because getting behind it would mean occupying a position the division has not yet produced.
